Brewed by:
Southern Tier Brewing Company
New York, United States

Style: Czech Pilsener

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer may have a cheeky name, but don’t be fooled; it is modeled after fine European pilsners to be light and crisp. Aromatic Noble hop varieties, 2-row malted barley and European style pilsner malt contribute to this pale beer’s smooth character.

A - Clear, light apple juice yellow. Pure white head with low ok retention and lace. Lively carbonation in the glass.

S - Lemon, sweet breadyness, soft yeast.

T - Crisp lemon, snappy mineral center with a light malt sweetness, dry green bitter finish.

M - Light, medium-light to style. Nice smoothness. Par carbonation.

O - Clean and crisp with great drinkability. Done well to style.

Bottle into a pilsener glass. DOB on bottle is 1/18/12.

Appearance: Clear body. Yellow in color. Average frothy white head that fades to basically nothing. No lacing. Lots of little carbonation bubbles flowing throughout.

Aroma: Spicy, floral hop. Lemon zest, biscuit and pilsener malt.

Taste: Quick spicy hop bite, somewhat floral and wet. Then kinda dulls and fades into a slightly sweeter malt character. Biscuit-y.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body. Soft carbonation kind of dulls it down but it's easily drinkable. and the flavors work well together. Finish is sweet dry biscuit.

A: Brilliant clarity on a golden-maize color shows a gentle whisper of effervesce. The head is oatmeal in color, frothy and patchy and quick to dissipate leaving no window lacing. Expected a bit more pop carbonation wise and head retention.

S: Green flowers on the nose, soft hay, very low grainiess, could of used a better and cleaner grain character and lacked the spicy hops of a good Czech pils.

T: A bit of moldy grain character, not very clean or crisp at all. Maybe that’s why they call it a euro-trash. Dry hay with a bit of funky mildewy hop finish and aftertaste.

M: Flat carbonation, but does have some substance body wise, still meh, lacks crispness.

O: Overall not very tasty, a bit of funky moldy hops, low carbonation and unclean malt profile leaves much to be desired. A shame because I usually like a lot of southern tiers beers, just goes to show you the real craftmenship is in brewing the lighter bodied beers where flaws cannot hide. Blah not even close.

Poured from the bottle a light clear gold color with three fingers of white head.

Aroma of lemon, biscuit, floral hops and sweet malts.

The taste matched the aroma. Lemon, floral hops, biscuit and sweet malts. Bitter bite to the finish.

Lighter bodied and crisp with a sharp carbonation.

I enjoyed this Czech Pilsner from Southern Tier quite a bit. I'll definitely have more this summer.

Had this on 2012-06-04 in Columbia, PA

A - Very clear yellow with a 1-finger white head that fades quickly and leaves little lacing.

S - Grassy, bready, herbal and light stone fruit. Volatiles fade quickly.

T - Honey-sweet pale malt, citrus, light stone fruit, grassy, herbal/metallic and some light hop bitterness come through at the end. Dries quickly leaving a citrus-tart and light bitter finish that sticks around awhile.

M - Light body and medium-high carbonation. Crisp and refreshing.

O - A pleasant but not earth-shattering pils. I much prefer Victory Prima Pils.

Poured into a pilsner: Light gold, clear body under three fingers of lumpy, glistening head that drops & leaves lichen-y lacing.

Smells of biscuity malt, lemon, white grape juice, slightly musty hops, a little "eggy" sulfuric.

Crisp taste of crusty biscuit, a little honey-like sweetness, mild fruitiness somewhere between melon & citrus, rounds off with a nice snap of bitterness in the finish & lingering dryness in the aftertaste, a little peppery.

Kind of teeters between smooth & "round", & crisp. Light-bodied.

This one's right in the wheelhouse. Nothing too spectacular about it, but solid & without any real flaws.

Pours a nice clear light gold with lots of visible carbonation. Medium white head. Smell is big herbal and floral noble hops. Lots of light sweet malt. Sharp hop bitterness in the middle. Good herbal hop flavors. There's a momentary a cake-like sweetness in the finish before fading to a lingering sharp bitterness. Pretty full bodied for a pils and well carbonated. Overall this is a really solid beer for its style and I'm not sure what else you want from a Czech style pils.
