Sometimes a guy gets in this so far he loses track of when he gets stuff. This is one of those situations. I don't believe this is too old, maybe a few months.
Black as night with dark head. Deep red highlights.
Deep soft roast (including coffee with nice chocolate overtones.
Flavor is quite close to the aroma and just as enjoyable. Very smooth flavors move gently from one to another in a most enjoyable manner. A pleasant roasty dryness lays on the finish lingering in it's pleasant manner. Hints of alcohol that actually seems to thin out the feel a bit. Otherwise a fully moderate or bigger feel.
Quite unexpected how much I'd enjoy this. Maybe it's just been awhile since I've had a bigger stout. Seems to go well with an early fall cool damp September night (yes it's getting dark early now). Nonetheless, I'd recommend this. Lactose seems a little light except in the aroma. Smooth and flavorful drink.

2X Stout pours a dark, chocolate fudge color. It’s nearly opaque. When held to light, there are a few burgundy highlights. A mocha tan collection of bubbles gathers on the surface, but dissipates very quickly. Lacing was very, very spotty and light. It’s not bad. The color’s pretty nice.

The nose is pretty good. It’s a tad on the weak side, but still holds together pretty well. It is malty up front. Lots of chocolate and roasted malt notes. It smells a little sweet, but not overly so. There’s a little coffee at the secondary level. Smells good. I’m getting some dark fruit, but it’s very subtle. That seems a little out of place. Light hop scents are noted late. They smell mostly grassy. Alcohol isn’t much of a factor. It’s not bad. More strength would be good.

The flavor is on-par with the nose. It’s definitely malty. Chocolate and roasted malt flavors are plentiful. The chocolate variety tastes mostly bittersweet. However, there’s definitely that sweet, sugary flavor that complements nicely. There’s even a nice caramel flavor in the mix. Roasted coffee and prune flavors are secondary. I like the coffee, but don’t care for the dark fruit much. It just seems weird. Fortunately, it is somewhat subtle. An interesting burnt or charred flavor emerges late and is somewhat strong. There are some grassy hop flavors on the tail. Alcohol is masked well and isn’t all that noticeable. Finishes malty, sweet, and a little hoppy.

2X Stout has a body that’s on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is nice and restrained. It feels nice and smooth. Mouthfeel is one of its stronger points. It does go down nice and easy.

2X Stout is a pretty good release from Southern Tier. It’s not among their best, but it is okay. The biggest issues with this one are the odd dark fruit flavor and the strong burnt flavor on the tail. If those two things were addressed, it’d be improved. It’s really not bad as it is though. Worth checking out? Yeah, it is.

Poured into an imperial pint glass.

A: Pours a transparent black with red highlights. Has less than 1 finger of white head that dissipates quickly and thin webbed lacing.

N: Coffee & cream along with milk chocolate and marshmallow.

T: Cola and watered down chocolate upfront. Some bitterness comes through mid-palate with cocoa nibs and a splash of black coffee. Finishes bitter with charred earth along with hints of lactose. There are some subtle hints on lemon citrus in there throughout.

M: Light-medium bodied, semi-creamy, smooth and dry.

O: This is actually kind of bitter for a cream stout. There is a good roasty quality to it along with some light tones of milk. Not bad.

On-tap at The Cask Republic, served in an oversized snifter.

A: The black body glows a clear, deep crimson when held up to light, while the finger of frothy tan head on top quickly recedes into a coarse ring and leaves spotty lace. Not bad.

S: Molasses, spicy chocolate, dark fruits, and a touch of booze. Pretty nice.

T: Mellow and sweet, with the dark fruits leading the way and the molasses and chocolate notes following behind. Bittersweet, slightly alcoholic finish. Good, not great.

M: Substantial, velvety, and moderately carbonated with ultra-fine bubbles. Lovely.

O: Enjoyable stout, but not one I'll be seeking out again.

Cheers!

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: 16-oz. glass
From: Eddy’s Beverage Inc. in Saratoga, N.Y.
Price: $1.99
Purchased: Jan. 15, 2014
Consumed: Jan. 17, 2014
Misc.: N/A

Poured a pitch black color with 3-to-4 fingers of khaki tan head. Great amount of layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Average-to-below retention.

Smelled chocolate milk, toffee, caramel, chocolate, cola, nuts and menthol cough drops.

Tasted chocolate milk, chocolate, caramel, toffee, slight wood fire and cocoa. So smooth.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

This beer really grew on me. The taste made up for the bad start. Yummy.

Pours opaque dark brown with a 1/2 tan head that fades to a ring and thin cap on top and leaves some spotty lace.

Smell is somewhat muted and consists of earthy, almost herbal hops with faint coffee and cocoa.

Taste is dominated by roasted malt with some lactose sweetness and hints of coffee and chocolate with a bitter hop finish.

Texture is light bodied with medium carbonation.

Somewhat of a disappointment. A fairly mediocre effort. Lacking in body and the flavor profile comes across as watered down and uninteresting.
