Poured a very dark brown with 2 finger tan milkshake head. Moderate lacing. Malty flavor with a slight hop bitterness on the end with not much lactose flavor, which I liked. Moderate body and carbonation. Overall not bad.

Just meh. Based on the other reviews I was expecting a characteristic stout with a sweet finish. Based on Southern Tier's other brews like Warlock, Choklat, and Creme Brulee I would expect that. But that was absent in this beer. Instead it was just bland. No real strong flavors of any sort came through. Not terrible but there are plenty of more interesting beers on the shelf. Update 10/30: Gave this beer another shot. On this second taste the sweet, milk flavoring of the stout came through much better. Almost like a Whopper candy. Liked much better on this second try.

Drank out of a standard pint glass, poured dark brown-black with a 1 inch head that doesn't cream like stout and leaves a bit of lace. Aroma is of milk and chocolate powder with a hint of fruit. Taste is sweet with creamy lactose and chocolate up front trailing of to a dark fruit and a hint of hoppiness.

If you are looking for a nice stout this is worth trying.

Another Southern Tier offering that simply did not disappoint.

Beautifully dark, decent head, and some lacing round out the look of this particular brew. I tried very hard to smell something out of the beer, but I simply couldn't. It at least did not overpower me with hops, so that at least was there. Good feel with a distinct carbonation at the start and then a creamy feel to finish. Good strong, but not overly bitter stout taste - comparable to some of the better ones I have had. Overall a solid brew that I would reach for anytime.

Pours a deep black with brown and red highlights around the edges, and a minimal mocha color head. Aroma is light roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and sweetness fron the milk sugar. Taste follows with milk chocolate, dark chocolate, light roast malt and coffee, and a nice and not overpowering sweetness from the lactose. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, but could be a bit bulkier, especially for a double stout. Overall, this is a very good iteration on the milk/sweet stout style, with nice flavors, a little more kick than regular versions, and quite drinkable.

Nice dark color with no head. Nose very sweet, almost chocolatey with hints of coffee. Taste very creamy but that masks the other flavors. Subtle hints of milk chocolate and a little roasted malt. Finish very sweet. Almost like a coffee milkshake. This beer was disappointing. It's ok but too sweet and the flavors didn't pop like most stouts do. Would try again just in case I got an older bottle but very underwhelming.

I love stouts. This one just is good, but not great. I've bought this a number of times and am always disappointed (I hope to remember this time) There is something about the use of hops that just doesn't mesh with the rest of the beer. I dislike the texture, it's like this beer is creamy but rough at the same time. Also is a tad too sweet for my tastes. But I'd drink again if there were very few other choices.

Delicious and smooth. First sip is reminiscent of a cup of coffee, and almost tastes as such. Roasty bitterness, but smooth with a hint of sweetness. Tasty, tasty, tasty,,,,,

Dark brown body, coarse off-white head, some legs of lace. Smell is roasted malt, mild chocolate and coffee, some sweetness but not really the creamy kind. The flavor starts off well with chocolate and roasted malt, but from mid palate to the end is a distasteful bitterness, something like a bitter herb. Mint and earth perhaps? Either way, the finish cannot end soon enough. Body is light, slightly oily, somewhat sharp carbonation.
It's difficult to mess up a milk stout, what with delicious creamy lactose sugar there to make it instantly appealing and cover up flaws or lack of other character. I suppose I should commend ST for going against the easy norm, but I can't say I enjoy this deviation.

Good and dark. Not a lot of stout aroma but did smell the alcohol. The taste was very good though. With nice maltyness and some oats, and even a little oaky. Would definitely get some more.

Not as bad as some reviews say but I was expecting more. Definitely light on the mouthfeel. Seems oaky and woody to me both in smell and taste. Not as much coffee, toffee and sweetness that I've come to enjoy out of a milk stout.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, nearly black, with minimal dark brown head. Quite heavy carbonation for a stout. Notes of coffee and chocolate with a nice aftertaste (slightly smoky and very bitter).

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance is pitch black in color (almost ink like). The head is one finger thick (less than expected) with moderate retention and good lacing around the glass.

Smell is caramel malt, oats, milk/vanilla, plum, some chocolate, peanuts and minor smokiness. Some alcohol is also noticeable.

Taste is a lot of chocolate, oats and roasted malt up front followed by milk/cream throughout. The chocolate is much stronger here than in the smell with caramel flavors also prevalent (not much coffee). Some fruit (plum) comes through in the taste as well. There is moderate sweetness upfront with a dry finish and low bitterness. There is also a little heat/alcohol detected on the finish but not overpowering.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied (lighter than expected) and creamy with good carbonation (some initial tingling).

Overall, this is a fairly well balanced stout with good chocolate and milk flavors, but I was hoping for a little more coffee flavors. It is a little sweet to drink more than one at time, but I would not hesitate to drink this stout again.

I like this better than others. Try 6.

A: Pours into a Duvel tulip a dark brown-black with ruby highlights and a 1 inch head that doesnt cream like stout and leaves a bit of lace.

S: Milk, hot chocolate and chocolate powder, with fruit.

T: The sweet, creamy lactose delivers more than chocolate up front. Then it becomes dark fruit, a tiny bit of roast and char, and the hoppy hint of citrus. Finishes sweet and dessert like.

F: Excellent. the best part. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation, but great creaminess.

O: if you like sweet 2x milk stouts, this must be on your short list, but otherwise mid-pack. Try 6.

L: Dark black, opaque, poured a light head that faded quickly. Light lace on the glass
S: Quite nice, milky sweetness. Maybe a little nutty, not much but a bit of chocolate as well.
T: Quite sweet like chocolate milk. A little of a burnt flavor as well as an aftertaste.
F: Burnt characteristics lend a somewhat acrid/astringent finish, more than normal though. Also not that creamy or smooth. However body is rich and full, carbonation is spot on.
O: Great sweet stout. Solid but not remarkable.

Overall, a very solid stout. It has lots of things I like about stouts - chocolate, nutty, coffee flavors. It is a bit on the malty side, but not too bad. It's not too sweet either. For the %ABV, it's boozy but without tasting like it is. Would drink again.

Maybe I've become a curmudgeon in my dotage.
This one's all right-- wouldn't walk a mile for it... wouldn't walk a half mile for it.
I see 2X on the label- but it's not a 2X stout. I'd call this one a mild stout.
It's got all the character of a stout but there's nothing truly unique,
truly eye opening. There's no startling perspective on the brewing world-- of stouts in this libation.
Looks OK, tastes OK-- (look up Stout) and there you have it.
I'm not feeling cheated by purchasing it-- it's just nothing I'd pick up a megaphone for to shout
out on the rooftop over alerting the beer drinking multitudes.

12 ounce bottle served in a pint glass.

Pours a jet black color with a frothy, tan, 3-fingered head with minimal lacing.

Not a strong aroma... but malty for what there is.

Taste of dark roasted malts, coffee, a slight chocolate taste and lactose. A slight bitter taste to balance out the malts.

Its a good beer. I wouldn't buy a six pack of these but a single from time to time.

I like Milk Stout to have a sweeter, milk chocolate flavor to them and this is right along those lines....a bit of cola flavor as well..., light coffee notes....creamer for sure....not a huge milk chocolate impression but it is there..

Body is silky but not huge....medium weight to this...

Interesting fruity dimension to the aroma....pears, apples.....not what I expected

Definitely not an Impy stout and not designed to be. Overall solid, not spectacular as I had hoped it would be.

Good morning, everybody! This is my first Southern Tier bier.

Appearance : This beer pours a dark espresso bean brown/black color with 100% opacity. The khaki colored head forms beautifully and rocky right off the bat at 3 fingers. Head retention is not great, but it leaves lace in flecks and specks as it recedes down to 1/2 finger.

Smell : Lots of syrupy plum, fig, and sap...with milk chocolate, oats, smoked & roasted malts, and macadamia. A burnt brown sugar note finishes out the sticky aroma. I feel like wiping my upper lip from the syrupy stickiness I've nosed. A positive improvement would be more chocolate, but I can't be too picky.

Taste : A bit hoppier than the nose would suggest, but it fills out nicely with rolled oats, sugar plum, and chocolate bar. A lingering light roast coffee bitterness remains to the finish if only to provide a slight hop tilt over the fulcrum of balance. A touch of root as well. Quite a bit of metallic flavors float around as well.

Feel : Well carbonated, medium bodied, yet still retains creaminess, ends sharp and dry.

Overall : This is a decent stout. I'd buy it again if I weren't flying back on a plane (I have to drink down all my bottles within 4 days since it's wiser to pack cans so they don't break).

Follow up

I recently had more of this after my parents came back from a trip. It's a bit more metallic than I remember. Quite a few better stouts out there for the taking, but still not bad. Scores adjusted.

Draft in Moxy restaurant, Porstmouth, NH.

Pours dark, with very little head.
Smells of roasty chocolate sweetness, but not a strong nose.
Taste is sweet followed by bitter--not as much chocolate as you would have expected from the scent.
Mouthfeel is fairly thin, and sweet. Low carbonation.

An okay stout, but not stellar. Nothing bad per se, but nothing to really stand out, either.

There's 12 ounces of beer in this bottle, and with two times the lactose sugar, should be a joy. On to the beer:

Half an inch of beige head rests on top this obsidian ale. Retention is solid, leaving a few splashes of lacing around the glass. The aroma is decent, but doesn't pop out as much as I hoped. There a little bit of dark chocolate and a wee note of lactose, not much else.

Sweet indeed, but it also offers a hoppy character within the sweetness. 2X Stout has a sweetness likened to cream and sugar. A roasty maltiness adds bitterness, and a mix of grassy and citric hops amplify the bitterness, keeping the sweet in check. The beer has a medium sized body that doesn't rush-hour drinking experience.

Someone castrated Crème Brûlée and put it in a 12 ounce bottle. This is more tame for everyday drinking, although that 7.5% ABV could surprise you.

Reviewed 2/9/12

L: Well, it looks like a stout: jet black with a tan head.

S: Smells like cocoa powder. It’s roasty, but undercut by a certain sweetness.

T: The flavor follows the aroma: roasty with a very perceptible sweetness throughout. This beer is rich and some subdued dark malts pull through in the finish, but this is definitely offset by the sweetness. Also less lingering bitterness than one would expect from a stout of this strength. Alcohol is somewhat perceptible, and I’m also picking up hints of oak.

F: Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. The lactose really shows its true colors with the mouthfeel. It is creamy and lush and leaves a gooey feeling in your mouth (in a good way!) A bit of warming alcohol in the post-sip.

Overall: Pretty solid non-imperial stout. It has a delightfully thick mouthfeel that I can only attribute to the lactose. Since I tend to prefer my stouts on the strong side, this one works quite well. The sweetness really makes this style unique but it is even more prevalent in this beer than other milk stouts I’ve had. Wouldn’t mind having this one again.

Pours with little head. Drinks fairly nice and smooth. As other reviews have noted, not a lot of chocolate flavor. Taste good, just not great. Borderline Fair/Good. I'm no expert though, give it a chance and post your thoughts.
