Southern Tier Brewing '2X Stout' @ 7.5% , served from a couple of 355 ml bottles purchased for $2.90 each

A-pour is a cola brown from the bottle to near black in the glass with some ruby red peeking thru the glass edge as a small tan head quickly dissapates leaving a minimal spotty lace along the pint after every sip

S-roasted coffee , boozey

T-smooth & strong , has a certain coffee bite on the swallow

MF-mild carbonation , feels full bodied

Ov-ok beer , strong for a sweet stout ,

A: Nearly black. Some light penetrates through. Small head, some lacing. Normal for a milk stout.

S: Coffee, chocolate, some fig or plum

T: At the first taste you can tell this is a bit stronger than some other milk stouts. Not quite as sweet and has more of a coffee presence/bite. No flavors over power the others too much but coffee and cocoa are most dominant with a tiny bit of earthiness.

M: Medium bodied and surprisingly this finishes dry. Nice!

O: A unique and interesting sweet stout. Surely worth a try. I get the feeling that if not for the unfermentable sugars, this would be one big stout.

I let this beer warm up before finishing as others had suggested and they are right. New smokey flavors develop to add some nice complexity.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass at about 45 degrees to start, sipping it as it warms.

Pours a dark brown, not quite black with a frothy uneven tan head. Lots of large bubbles creating a foamy head. Thin lacing that doesn't hang around.

Aroma is sweetness with chocolate and a hint of coffee. Can pick up the chocolate in the taste, and some roasted malt. Not as sweet as I expected, and some bitterness on the finish. It states 2 varieties of hops and 3 varieties of malts, but they seem muddled together without giving the beer any character. Still, it improves as the beer warms so better to let it sit a bit.

Body is a little thin and fizzy, would like the carbonation down a bit and the thickness up.

A good beer, but there are a lot of stouts out there that I prefer.

Finnegan's here in town has $3.50 nitro drafts on Thursdays, and this was one of the specials yesterday. Sounded the most tempting. Came out a jet black with the typical hazy drift of mocha tinted nitro bubbles creeping to the top creating the creamiest of heads. Looks like a dallop of whipped cream on top.

Aromas of sweet cream, chocolate, and lightly roasted coffee beans. The beer is not as smooth as I'd anticipated given its nitro-backing. Still a nice bite to it. Easy to drink though. I had no problem putting the gulp to this one. Creamy chocolate, roasted character, light vanilla on the back end. Easy finish. A nice beer.
