2X Stout is stout enough that not a trace of clarity or highlighting is possible regardless of the angle; this is a beer as dense as the heart of a black hole. Coffee, by comparison, is much lighter. But while it looks thick as a freight bridge it can't even support its own measly string of foam.

The nose is roasty and bittersweet, smelling something like a cross between a coffeehouse and chocolate shop. Those afraid of the dark will scream and run at first whiff; the bouquet is as dark as the appearance. However, for those who (like me) like it rich this is a very promising start.

If Forest Gump was right and life really is like a box of chocolates, 2X Stout is the best one you could hope to pick out of the bunch. It has the rich, sooty qualities of cocoa, the milky sweetness of caramel, some chewy nougat, the roastiness of coffee and, owing to its hops, a hint of citrus too. It also has the thick, full body of a frothy milkshake.

The finish has an ashy, roasted texture and tastes like the inside of a coffee grinder. For those sensitive to sooty and bitter qualities do not despair; a note of dark chocolate-covered caramels completes the aftertaste. Beers brewed with lactose generally have more sweetness but this one, while still approachable and toothsome, has a persona that's more ashy than sugary.

There are few breweries that offer such an extensive array of stouts as Southern Tier. I honestly wouldn't have thought they could come up with another for the portfolio but, lo and behold, they have; this can definitely hold its own alongside the classics like Choklat, Jah-va and Oat.
