Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely!

Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% ABV is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Food Pairings:

Buttery and aged cheeses
Spicy foods & beef brisket

For the first beer post-COVID (mentioning in case my sense of taste seems off), this poured somewhat viscous and dark, opaque brown into the glass and produced only a modest latte-colored head that quickly disappeared. Faint notes of buttermilk and coffee and an almost dark berry are subtle. Initial mouth feel is lightly round, though not as much as I'd have expected from how viscous the brew looked on the pour. This ends in a slightly bitter astringency that lasts on the tongue but doesn't make its way down the throat... well, the bitterness does. In between, it is almost like a less sweet, slightly-hopped cherry cola, not unpleasant with the buttered popcorn I'm eating, but also not expected from a stout.

Solid yet clear, dark brown body; thick, light khaki colored head, dense and creamy. Mild chocolate sweetness on the nose with a touch of roasted grain. Sweet cocoa flavor with some bitter chocolate; a suggestion of vanilla; mild to moderate hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; smooth and silky; nice residual sugar feel.

This is a fine double milk stout, balanced and tasty.

Served at 51.8° F; label bottling info: BESTBY 06/04/21

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish head tulip

L: Dark, dark brown pour... nearly black with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Decent lacing.

S: Roasty and sweet. Coffee, cocoa, and grains.

T.F: Semi-sweet... roasted grains and burned sugars. Vanilla, cocoa, and espresso. Minimal hop bitterness and spice. Medium bodied... smooth.

O: A solid 2x milk stout. Drinkable and hits the right flavors. One I'd have again.

It definitely came across as a strong stout. Given it had "double milk stout" on the bottle, I was expecting a doubly strong sense of the sweetness from a milk stout yet that sweetness seemed less than other milk stouts.

Sampled in April 2021 from 12oz bottle in pint glass. "Best by" date of 8/10/2021 was on the bottle.

Appearance: Pitch black, dark color, and had a small 1-finger light tan head when poured. The head lasted only a minute leaving a thin head, and left a little lacing on the glass.

Smell: There is a strong malt aroma detected as well as some coffee and earthy aromas. Also, some sweet chocolate and spice, with no hop bitterness aromas. Nice combination between the various aromas, but the malty aroma dominates.

Taste: Interesting combination of chocolate and coffee flavors. There is a little hop bitterness which provides a nice balance to the other flavors. Also, a little roasted malts flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, and very smooth as expected from a milk-stout. Moderate alcohol which matches with the 7.5% on the label.

Overall: This is a good drinking beer, and an interesting milk-stout. It is not as strong or complex as the Imperial stouts I usually prefer, but it is much more complex and enjoyable than a regular milk-stout. I would definitely buy this again.

Pours dark with little head. Nice aroma. Taste was good, strong with a touch too much alcohol taste for a 7.5%. Over all I enjoyed it but I have had better Stouts.

Good milk stout. Almost black color with tan foamy head that hung around for a few minutes. Taste mirrored aroma and well balanced, not too sweet and not abundantly bitter either. Would drink again. 6 pk bottles was $9.99 + tax.

12 oz bottle poured into my snifter at cellar temp. Ive had the bottle for a couple of years. It has been cellared the entire time. Bottle DOB is 1/19/2017
Before I get to the pour, a very slow foam gush starts to creep out of the bottle mouth.
Pouring the beer into my glass it exhibits a dark cola brown color with no light passing through it. A creamy beige head of 1 cm foams up and fades to a very sturdy surface layer and edging. this foam remains throughout my sampling.
The aroma is rich roasted malt and some dark chocolate mixing together with a little bit of brown sugar and hints of coffee bean too. Not as sweet as I expected, but that may have faded out. No hops and no indication of the booze either.
taking the first sip reveals a smooth textured medium body with a bit of a sticky mouthfeel. Carbonation is very fine and gentle on my palate. this beer and its physical traits are easy drinking.
Flavor is similar to the nose. Very roasty, with dark chocolate and roast malts and again hints of coffee grounds. the chocolate notes linger long after each swallow, but it isnt sweet chocolate like an easter candy, more like the high% cacao stuff. Just a hint of a sweeter note and then rolls back to dark roasted malt. Again, no hops nor booze found here and the beer drinks easy.
I like this beer, but wonder if it was better fresh with a little more of the sweetness that has faded out over time. Id drink it again, but wouldnt age it.
