Notes: Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition. 2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Nice-smelling beer with some tasty ginger, clove, cinnamon, and orange/lemon. A little bit weird and underwhelming, but not bad. I would like to try more beers in this style.

OKAY, words cannot describe how bad this beer is. It has a beautiful color just like the 2X IPA, but it smells like a bad candle. And the taste, what on earth were they thinking? First off to take a beer as hoppy and citrisy as their 2X IPA and mix it with cinnamon seems bad enough, but it's like they put half a container of it in every beer. It has a painful taste, like chugging a bottle of cinnamon, I truly have no idea how anyone enjoys this beer and at the craft beer store I work at it is EASILY the most hated beer among the staff not just of the seasonals but of any beers. Never would expect this from Southern Tier.

If you love spices, especially cloves, you're in for a treat. Unfortunately, I despise cloves! Sadly, it's the 1st beer I've EVER poured down the drain after having 2 sips. Wish I checked my BA app before buying the 6 pack. My fault.

Not for me. Way too much spice. I haven't dumped a beer down the drain since summer, but this was just not enjoyable for me. My ratings were generous.

Ruby brown in color. The nose is spicy but nutmeg stands out above anything else. The flavor profile includes seasonal spices such as nutmeg and allspice but also orange as well. The finish is semi-dry.

The spices get a little much at times but, other than that, this is a pretty darn good Christmas beer.

On tap at Yardhouse.
Deep red-brown with a head that soon reduced to a ring. Minimal lacing.
Both the aroma and the flavor reflect a heavy use of nutmeg. There are some other spices in here too, but the overall spicing level is just too high, largely masking the malts.

Poured a clear ruby red body with a half finger cap of bubbly off-white head. Overall impression of appearance is of a nice red ale if it were to be said to be any style, though overall it's rather unique in appearance. Scents of orange peel upfront mingled with mulling spices providing spicy and sweet depth, dark fruit is also present, fittingly figs, with notes of red wine also present, though in a mulled manner. Malt adds a light caramel character with some toasted notes. Overall impression of aroma is of mulled wine, but transformed to a beer. It is wonderfully spicy, with the orange peel also on full display, balanced by lovely malt. A beer glogg. Fantastic. Flavor begins by following aroma, sweet mulling spices balanced by orange peel, sweet fig and nicely sweet malt. Middle continues these flavors with orange peel and sweet mulled wine evident. Finish is lightly sweet, yet balanced, with caramel-like malt combining with orange peel, mulling spices and dark fruit to create a complex whole. Aftertaste is orange peel and mulling spices. Overall impression of flavor is of an amazing beer, one that defied my expectations. It is truly a beer glogg and wonderfully pleasant. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with light carbonation and a smooth warming feel. Ovreally impression of mouthfeel is of an amazing winter ale. Overall this is a fantastic glogg-inspired ale. It has a rich, warming aroma and flavor complimented by a lovely mouthfeel. A truly unique and excellent beer, and after Pumking and Warlock it restored my faith in Southern Tier.

Way too heavy on the ginger. Taste similar to a very bitter shaving cream.

A decent holiday offering from Southern Tier...

I really like the color of this brew though there was no head or lacing of worth. The smell was all about Christmas - figgy, cinnamony, spicy, even a sweet tang to the nose. The mouthfeel was a mixture of high carbonation with spicy sensation and a creamy texture that was definitely there. All those spices and figs and whatnot didn't equate to something I truly found tasty, but it was a worthwhile brew and one I would offer up to friends the next Christmas that rolls around.

It's easy to hate Christmas beers in general, oh and Christmas even more generally, but an IPA with spice mix? It's like an Xmas themed citronella. GTFO!

Pours a one finger light tan head that fades quickly to a ring and leaves no lace. Cloudy dark amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Orange peel nose and flavor is spicy orange peel, figs are hidden. $2.09 for a 12oz bottle from Madden Beverage Saco, ME.

12oz bottle, served in an Innis & Gunn Tulip glass. Shared with others during evening beer tasting.

Appearance: Copper-amber with a slight haze. Thin light tan ring of foam, some lacing noted.

Smell: Very strong spicy smell of ginger, pepper, nutmeg, and orange peel. Very much like a mulled/spiced wine.

Taste: Very peppery and spicy with some malt sweetness in the middle and more pepper/spice + mild orange peel at the finish. More spiced drink than beer.

Mouthfeel: Sticky, but smooth.

Overall / Drinkability: Definitely right that this beer was labeled as an Herbed/Spiced beer rather than as a winter warmer. This beer is very intense in the spices and while I've not had a Swedish Glogg, it definitely reminds me of a highly spiced tea/winter drink. If there are hops in this I cannot detect them over all the spices. Overall, a glass of Christmas spice smell in a glass. Drinkability.....this one was hard to finish and while it was good to try for the concept, I could easily see one either loving or hating this beer. I found it interesting, but I think I would be forcing myself to finish off a whole bottle - so I'm glad I shared it with others. So not high drinkability, but I'll give it good marks for depth and intensity of flavor.

One of the best herb/spiced beers I ever tasted. It sort of reminds me of a pumpkin ales due to the spices that were used. Well balanced & the high abv is hidden well. A 4 pack of this would be great for a special occasion. I agree with the malts being masked but hey that's not that big of an issue in my opinion. I don't know what everybody is ranting about this beer I think that it's good. Cheers! A-

I suppose by the time one gets to Valentines Day the Xmas beers should be done.
So, nice and pleasing spicing that is dominant but not too strong. KInd of has a brandy atoma. Some malt backing.
Pours without much head. Dark bronze and very clear.
Surprisingly dry and doesn't drink like brandy. Spice are showing a little more age her than in the aroma and thus are less fresh and more dull in presentation. Firmer malt base here. Really drying, did I say that already?
Moderate to higher body. Lower carbonation that is soft.
This is fine enough. Nothing to write home about, but not a problem or a disaster either. It became a little more annoying in time.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

A tad early for any decorations or festive merry-making, but I'm too much of a ticker to let a new Southern Tier 2X beer sit on the bench. This stuff pours a clear sunrise garnet topped by a finger of dusty wan tan foam. The nose comprises ginger, light peppermint, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, gingerbread cookies, and candied orange peel. The taste focuses on that orange peel, along with a bit of rye bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and ginger. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda grainy feel. Overall, a pretty solid Christmas beer, one that certainly lives up to its billing as a glogg beer, though the spicing may be a bit much.

Served from the bottle into a goblet. The second beer of my 2014 twelve beers of Christmas.

A- Poured a very dark, deep, and clear reddish brown color with light visible carbonation and white soapy head that left no lace.

S- Lots of fresh orange zest; holiday spices of cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg; and some dark fruit and dark malt notes.

T- Sweet fruit cake notes, red apple, orange citrus, some medicinal notes, dark beady malts, and pretty big allspice notes on the finish.

M- Medium to full bodied, slightly syrupy, some pretty big warming, some burn, and a pretty dry finish.

O- A pretty interesting spiced Christmas Ale. The aroma was much more spice-forward than the flavor. The flavor profile was a bit on the sweet side, but not too cloying. I wouldn't really want more than one in a night, as it was a little boozy, but this is a pretty good ale that is reminiscent of the season.
