I tried this at my friends house in Concord OH. It poured a hazy amber with no head and no lace. The scent had all the fixings of Xmas potpourri. The taste is slightly bitter and had the typical Xmas flare. The Mouthfeel is fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall it's good for Xmas ale....but not my fav style. Added some vanilla vodka at the end and it helped smooth it out.

A 12oz. bottle dated 09/29/16 poured in my Southern Tier Pumking glass.

Look- Pours a transparent dark amber/copper color leaving a few centimeters of off white foam. It quickly settles leaving a ring around the glass and no lacing.

Smell- Cinnamon, allspice, orange zest, and other crazy things I can't identify with. It smells like potpourri or cheap shaving cream.

Taste- Cinnamon, allspice, orange zest and something pepper-like. A big messy mix of spices.

Feel- Thin and slick with a tingle to the palate. A bit of heat going down.

Overall- I'm not a big fan of spiced pumpkin or Christmas beers and this has to rank with one of the heavier handed ones I've had. I never tasted potpourri or shaving cream, but if I did it might taste like this beer? Mouthwash comes to mind as I have a few more sips. A definite pass next time around!

A decent holiday offering from Southern Tier...

I really like the color of this brew though there was no head or lacing of worth. The smell was all about Christmas - figgy, cinnamony, spicy, even a sweet tang to the nose. The mouthfeel was a mixture of high carbonation with spicy sensation and a creamy texture that was definitely there. All those spices and figs and whatnot didn't equate to something I truly found tasty, but it was a worthwhile brew and one I would offer up to friends the next Christmas that rolls around.

Another Southern Tier homerun!
Reminiscent of the Pumking backbone of flavor but with less hoppy bitterness, and more of a spiced Christmas ale flavor. With the price at 10 dollars a six pack, it's a steal. A really enjoyable, well balanced, full bodied ale.

Aroma Is plum, raisin, allspice, coriander, clove. Very festive. Clear brown color with a touch of red. Ashy taste, bitter orange. Good winter style beer, though the aroma sets your expectations high and the flavor disappoints. Poor Mans Harpoon Winter Warmer.

Poured into a custom shaped glass: color is amber, head is light tan with mainly fine bubbles and presents about 1/2 inch thick, some head lacing on the glass.

Smell is cinnamon heavy, then some lighter spice aromas from clove, cardamom, and orange peel; fig is present lightly on the end of the scent.

Taste follows the aroma: cinnamon heavy, lighter spice blend, hints of orange and light fig sweetness; additional flavor from the caramel and malt profile; some moderate bitterness coming through as well.

Mouthfeel is crisp, carbonated a little biting on the tongue from the cinnamon and spice - but something to expect from a heavily spiced ale.

Overall, well done spiced/winter warmer style ale - strong spice profile with moderate maltiness and hints of fig (though subtle).

Pours a foggy, murky burned-burgundy. Head formation rises and falls quickly, but tops out at around half a finger of fizz, khaki head. Aroma is stuffed full of spices, with notes of fig, raisins, orange zest, pine hops, and biscuit malts all smooshed together. Without a doubt, there is a lot going on in the aroma of this beer. Reminiscent of holiday spiced drinks from Europe (or IKEA in my case). Flavor profile continues to pound the spices, fig, raisins, and orange zest train. Spice rule the day. Hops and malts are buried, as is any hint of alcohol, instead it just tastes like a roided out holiday drink. Mouth feel is fizzy and slightly abrasive, with a finish that smooths out a little bit. Overall, a solid holiday beer, but extremely - EXTREMELY - polarizing. I don't know that sipping this while wearing a Christmas sweater would make it any more tasty.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Personal Reflection: This beer is extremely polarizing. So much so, that I'm having a tough time rating it compared with the style (as I always rate against). As such, I feel it necessary to mention my ratings my reflect some personal bias. I did not enjoy this beer, there is just so much going on. I've had Gloegg before, and didn't care much for it either. I have done my very best to rate each category of this beer based on the criteria of the "herbed / spiced beer" category.

Christmas beer on steroids, lots of cinnamon and pine flavors all over this beer, not a lot of finesse in this beer, probably couldn't do more than two in a sitting
