Style: Czech Pilsener

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Styled after the Bohemian classic, Pilz is a crisp golden pilsner with an assertive hop character. With special Moravian heirloom barley malt, a traditional decoction mash creates a firm yet light body and deep golden color. Cold fermentation with a Czech lager yeast and lengthy secondary conditioning produce a brilliant beer that highlights the spicy and grassy Saaz hops. Authenticity in a glass; Pilz is beer.

On my previous review of this brew, I think my palate must have been slightly off due to previous tastings.

This beer has an excellent balance of strong grassy somewhat citrusy hops with a slightly sweet malt to balance everything out. The after taste is awesome as the hop bitterness leaves you wanting more.

As I said above, this is a great Czech Pilsner. If you like a highly hopped brew with some good balance, this is your brew. One of my faves brewed right here in Austin!

The platonic ideal of a pilsner. Like most things Live Oak, better than most German versions of the same beer, while still holding true to the style.

Favorite pilsener! The lemon quality is exactly what I want out of one.

I was busy during this review so it isn't as in depth.

Nice thick head with great retention. Nice amber color.

Taste is simple. some pale malts and nice hop bitterness. Pilsners tend to be good and simple, and this one is no exception.

Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing.

This beer is ridiculously well balanced and easy to drink.

Not a whole lot going on, but really good.

Sampled at the Hay Merchant, Houston TX; April 2012
The beer arrives with a clear gold color. It is topped by a frothy, half-finger thick, pale off white colored head that leaves some faint lacing on the sides of my glass as I work my way through. The aroma is herbal, grassy, and has a touch citrus character to it. It is quite dry smelling, with a cracker like maltiness; this has a really nice malt expression to it though this is fairly light and I like the smooth, integrated hop character that is here as well.

As the beer first hits my palate, it is crisp, with a bite of hop bitterness, a lean pale malt character, and is overall quite cool and refreshing. The bitterness has an herbal edge to it, and is definitely a showcase for a clean, noble hop laden spiciness and herbal character. A cracker like malt / grain character lingers on the palate with the hop bitterness, the latter dominates finish just enough that you really want to take another sip.

This is quite easy drinking, before I know it the beer is gone; this is an awesome Pilsener that I would love to drink a lot of. It might even be better than HefeWeizen from the same brewery, though I would need to be in right mood to consume this beer (though I don’t see that of being much of an issue).

I know my score my be a bit heavy-handed compared to other, however IMO - this is a very solid example of exactly what a pilsner should be. Pours a nice golden color. One-finger bubbly white head that dissipates quickly. Strong lacing. Taste & smell are spot on.
