Style: German Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Modeled after the classic wheat beers of Bavaria, Hefeweizen is cloudy and straw-colored with a meringue-like head that lingers to the bottom of the glass. Brewed with an ample volume of wheat malt and few hops, this beer features a unique yeast strain that produces harmonious notes of clove, banana, and vanilla throughout this effervescent brew. A traditional interpretation of a classic style, this idiosyncratic Bavarian beer is perfectly at home here in Texas.

I really like the look of these cans, and the beer inside is good as well. This hefeweizen is very smooth and worth a try. Is has some definite Brady smells and flavors but they are not lingering.

Not my fave style but I can accept this is a great representation of the style. Smooth and hazy and wheat is very evident. Probably the best hefe I've had though 3.75 probably where
I top out for the style.

Gold in color with a fingernail of dishwater white around the rim. The aroma is an enticing blend of banana and a hint of clove. I'm tasting pale wheat and banana. The mouth is lit, crisp, and a touch watery.

Pale gold pour with white head which died quickly; slightly opaque/hazy, yet clear enough to see carbonation; no cap or lace. Banana bread nose. Spicy banana and clove flavors. Moderate plus carbonation and lite fluffy mouthfeel. Overall lite and easy drinking.

Drank from a half-gallon growler
Acquired in a trade with thickerfreakness
Served in a weizen glass

Poured an uber-cloudy amber color with bright straw yellow highlights. The creamy, tight, two-finger, bubbly white head faded to a lasting cap of foam. Sticky blocks of thick lacing clung to the sides of the glass. A substantial amount of yeast sediment collected in the bottom of the liquid.

The aroma was quite unusual for the style. Earthy, musty and sour. Lemony and a bit funky (almost brett-like) initially with some candy-like, vanilla sweetness appearing later on. Perhaps some bubblegum as well? An interesting mix of sweet and tart. Smoke was also noticeable. Spicy, with clove being the dominant spice.

The taste was similar to the aroma. Lemony, citrusy and quite sour (once again, almost brett-like). Complex and unusual. Malty sweet up front with a wheat-like tartness and a touch of smoke in the center. The finish was snappy. Semi-bitter, tart and dry with a lingering semi-dry aftertaste.

The mouthfeel was thin and watery with a very mild carbonation. Quite disappointing.

As for drinkability, this was definitely a refreshing offering that can "beat the Texas heat" (as the website claims) or the Massachusetts heat, for that matter.

This was a very unusual hefeweizen and, frankly, a bit of a disappointment. This beer severely lacked many of the key attributes (intense notes of banana, bubblegum and clove as well as a lush, creamy smoothness) typically found in better examples of this style. The flavors in this beer just did not "pop" like I was expecting them to. Also, the sour/funk characteristic, albeit intriguing, was quite odd. An interesting offering but probably not one that I would seek out again.

View: hazy, bright yellow
Smell: Some strange smell to it, a lot of maltiness
Taste: still that strange taste is there, and still a lot of maltiness too. Little hoppiness. Some citrus taste.

A nice hefe, but I still can't make out what that strange taste is and how I feel about it.

Pours a nice bright, hazy sunshine with a thick white head of big bubbles that dissipates swiftly.
Nose is a bit funky, yeasty, some banana and summer squash scents.
Tastes of bitter citrus rind, some melon, some hint of holiday spice.
Mouthfeel is nice and crisp, very effervescent on the tongue, very clean.
Overall a fine beer but it seems a lot sharper and a bit more bitter than the hefeweizen I'm familiar with. Still a great option for a hot summer day, and would probably benefit from an orange slice.

Thanks Shaun for the growler! Pours a cloudy and hazy straw yellow color with a nice thick white head especially after an aggressive pour. The aroma is of belgian yeast, banana, and wheat. Smooth tasting with a fine balance of banana, clove, and wheat with a slight watered-down after taste along with the yeast. Zero alcohol taste. Very refreshing. This is one overhyped hefe and I've had plenty better ones - so this was a bit disappointing after I traded quite a bit for this growler. But, in any case, sure glad to have tried this one from Austin!

The New Amsterdamm in Dallas have this on tap and won't be rotating it out any time soon ordering to the barman. This one stood up to some extending tasting and definitely passes the drinkability test. A light golden colour that has the expected haze of a hefe. Aromas of vanilla and clove dominant. Less of the banana ester is present, there is a slight medicinal aroma but it is not off putting to me. Great flavour, yeast and malt - no hop but present. Quite sweet but not cloying.
