Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Modeled after the classic wheat beers of Bavaria, Hefeweizen is cloudy and straw-colored with a meringue-like head that lingers to the bottom of the glass. Brewed with an ample volume of wheat malt and few hops, this beer features a unique yeast strain that produces harmonious notes of clove, banana, and vanilla throughout this effervescent brew. A traditional interpretation of a classic style, this idiosyncratic Bavarian beer is perfectly at home here in Texas.

Strictly for the taste this may give Franz and Weihenstephaner a run for best Hef. on the planet, but the appearance and aroma aren't quite there. Still an amazing and world class Hef. Probably the best in the US or top 5 at least.

12oz Can

Live Oak Hefe looks like its German brethren, as it should. It's bright golden, glowing in fact, with a minimal haziness. The foam is tight and robust reaching two-plus fingers in height on the pour. Carbonation rushes from every surface of the glass up to the dense foam. The head eventually settles to a thick cap after a handful of minutes and leaves behind sticky lace as it does so.

The nose is full on yeast driven but also shows restraint, subtleties, and balance. Banana and bubblegum are first up and lead the way through the finish. An exceptional floral quality pops up in the middle and adds to the soft, rounded sweetness. The clove is more allspice than clove and simply adds a touch of depth overall which is perfect to me. Clove bombs I can't stomach. There's a large, sturdy freshly cracked wheat character that's comforting overall. The nose on this beer fits my taste for style nearly perfectly.

Each drink perfectly mimics the nose. Banana and baseball card bubblegum are the mainstays. They're exceptionally balanced and even handed. The allspice is soft and fairly warming while staying on the periphery of that dense, fresh wheat base. This beer is clean and all around smooth, not a single edge.

The body shows a welcomed density. There's weight but it's plush and luxurious, not heavy or cloying. The carbonation is active and keeps the body moving at a good pace leaving behind a touch of sweetness that dries up over a few seconds. Each drink leaves me salivating unto the next.

Live Oak's Hefe deserves every ounce of praise that it receives and most likely more. This is an exceptional beer in the style. It's bright and vibrant yet perfectly well balanced in every aspect. It's a lesson in "bigger isn't always better" and more of something can be too much. This coming from a guy that passes on hefeweizen always. Wow, impressive stuff.

Pours gold. Short, foamy, Whitehead that Fades fast.

Smells wheat, yeast funk, clove, spice and banana.

Taste Citrus, wheat, clove, banana, yeast Funk and a little sweetness. Finishes semi-dry with yeast and citrus linger. Lighter medium body and smooth medium carbonation.

Interesting Hef with a nice, creamy texture. Unique, almost smoky finish. Moderate, subdued CO2.

Gold in color with a fingernail of dishwater white around the rim. The aroma is an enticing blend of banana and a hint of clove. I'm tasting pale wheat and banana. The mouth is lit, crisp, and a touch watery.

Finally got to try this while I was down in Austin for a business trip. Pours super cloudy yellow color with a dense white head that doesn't quit. Big Bavarian aroma on this, sweet wheat with tons of spice. Flavor is about the same, good dose of sweetness that is washed away by wheaty grain notes and lots of clove and banana. Could drink this all day in the Texas heat. Really something special here and the beer could definitely rival it's European brethren from Bayern.
