On tap several times, most recently at D&T in Houston.

A: Pours a dark brown, nearly black color. A two finger beige head forms with good retention and lace .
S: Buttery and malty up front. Toast, cereal grains, and then the smoke. Light meaty ham hack.
T: Big toasted malts, cereal grains, light roast. Then the smoke takes over. Not overwhelming, but very noticeable. Meaty, hammy and all that good Rauch character you would expect. Though balanced with the rest of the malty character.
M/D: A medium body that is well carbonated. Crisp, but also smooth at the same time. For the style this is really easy to drink. The balance between the malts and smoke is great. I have had several since this has become available.

Certainly not as up front, and in some cases, not as abrasive as some German offerings. Though there is still that distinct meaty character. Which is always balanced with their great base Schwarzer. If not one of Live Oak's best, or even 100% authentic, still really enjoyable. Recommended.

From notes taken at the brewery.

Dark brown with deep red hues at the light. Leaves a streaky tan froth down the side of the glass after a slow fade. Has a smokey sweet aroma. Taste involves grain, slight notes of dark fruit as well as other notes of faint wood and smoke that become more prominent as the beer warms. Lighter in body that expected.

A damn good outing by a damn good brewery (who generally has the German styles down pat) but could use a bit more flavor. Then again I'm a bit biased toward the real thing.
