16 February 2020 - Beer #29

Price: $17.99 on Tavour

Appearance: 4 - nearly perfect. Good looking dark tan head, but the blackness is too at the edges.

Nose: 4 - no barrel whatsoever. But it's a nice smelling stout. Very deep and roasty.

Taste: 4 - straight up stout. Maybe a tiny bit of barrel sweetness if you squint. I like straight up stout.

Mouth: 5 - well crafted. Thick and chewy. Comes alive with some chewing.

Overall: 4 - a fine stout. Just wish there were more barrel.

Cheers!

Tar-black body topped with a thin, tan colored head. Rich, malty aroma; infusion of cocoa with notes of dates and raisins. Huge flavors of cocoa with a nifty bourbon presence; milk chocolate with a bit of vanilla. Heavy body; velvety; warm, boozy quality with a silky chocolate sweetness.

A beautiful beast of a beer, full of rich lushness, mildy sweet chocolate with a superbly balanced bit of whiskey heat. My bottle indicates the ABV is 11.2%.

2016 edition of Drake's Bourbon Barrel Drakonic, on tap at Khyber Pass. Aged for only four months in High West barrels... but mighty flavorful!

Very good barrel character, smooth feel, high drinkability. My first beer from this brewery and I am impressed.

The beer pours relatively thick leaving a half inch of dark khaki head from an aggressive pour in to a teku. The smell on this beer is pretty divine. Very nice balance between the barrel notes and the underlying notes of the beer. Bourbon boozy notes with a hint of vanilla complemented nicely by a strong roasty note. The flavor is also a hallmark of balance between barrel and underlying beer. There is a slight sweetness on the front end followed by a pleasant roastiness that is not overpowering or bitter; again, balance of flavors. The beer is lightly carbonated as is proper for the style with a silky smooth mouthfeel that is pleasantly thick. Overall I was very impressed by this beer. Great balance between barrel and beer. This is what a barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout should strive to be.

Had [email protected] Capitol Beer and Taproom in Sacramento, CA

Appearance - Served up in a 10oz nonic glass with a half finger's width of cocoa colored head. The brew itself is dark cola brown in color.

Smell - Weak aromatics, with muted fudge, distant bourbon and vanilla, and a trace of roast.

Taste - Thankfully more flavor than the nose led on. Equal notes of fudgy chocolate and sweet bourbon character. Malt roast hits mid-taste to deliver a nice counter-balance to the sweetness. Smooth, underlying coconut. Finishes with a nice balance of flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with low carbonation. Slick, silky texture with a semi-dry finish. Very nice!

Overall - I didn't think it'd be the case, but I may like this more than the regular Drakonic. The BBA process is noticeable, taking care not to overwhelm the other flavors found in this beer. Well done, Drake's!

Much better than the older barrel aged version (title). This one is a bit bigger.

Black pour, tan head. Aroma was solidly bourbon this time around. Almost too much.

Taste, lots of bourbon again, chocolate malt, just a stronger, but milder tasting ride. Bourbon dominates, but isn't as hot as before.

This one is dark. Hold it up to the light and nothing gets through. A true black beer.

Pours a dark tan head. Smells like deep chocolate and lots of oak. The chocolate and oak blend together on the nose.

taste: Strongly of chocolate, then quickly to the oaky bourbon flavor which lingers. Sometimes can get a definite spiciness, like its poking you, and this makes it very interesting to me. Mildly carbonated, I would say. Don't get a definite alcoholic taste, but with 11.4% you can tell it is strong. Not much sweetness here. Not too bitter though, and I like sweet beer. This is good. Would definitely go out of my way to pick up more. It is at once smooth and stabbing. Try it if you can.

I love bourbon barrel aged beers, but every once in a while I come across one that has a bit too much bourbon flavor. This is one of those. Pretty good, just not that great.***Update - the previous review was based on a draft tasting shortly after release. Currently drinking out of the bottle, poured into a snifter...WOW! What a difference bottle aging has done for this beer! The bourbon has mellowed out perfectly. This beer is every bit as good as Bourbon County.
