Very Good
Denogginizer Double IPADenogginizer Double IPA
Notes: Brace yourself. Denogginizer is a massive Double IPA that's sublimely hopped with an over-the-top dosing of dank, sticky West Coast hops. With just enough malt backbone to keep this big, resinous hop monster in check, don't be afraid to lose your head to the Denogginizer.

Draft @ Marriott SFO. Aroma is light citrusy hops. Color is clear dark amber with a white head that quickly dissipates, but has OK lacing. Pleasant bitterness with a little citrus, and a pretty strong malty backbone to balance. Full bodied. Didn't taste as strong as it was to me. Very good DIPA!

I signed up for Tavour a couple/few months ago & their service has really been bringing the west coast beers to this east coast imbiber! Man, my last shipment comprised two (2) boxes! I brought several bombers with me to Allentown last weekend, but my traveling companion was more into Stouts & Porters so I brought me big DIPAs home for another time. On another digression, I was stationed at NAS Alameda, CA from 1987 to 1989 & I visited Drake's subsequent to that, but San Leandro will always & forever conjure up memories of the beauteous Ann, a fellow sailor with whom I was involved. Those were glorious times! Sigh.

From the bottle: "Brace yourself. Denogginizer is a massive Double IPA that's sublimely hopped with an over-the-top dosing of dank, sticky West Coast hops. With just enough malt backbone to keep this big, resinous hop monster in check, don't be afraid to lose your head to the Denogginizer."

I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour that made the Drake's cousin, Malt Duck, very happy. She squeaked in delight as I performed an in-glass swirl that raised just over two fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head with modest retention. Her awe was evident when I raised the glass to see that the liquid was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. She quacked up when I raised the glass to my nose for a whiff & got massive, resinous dank that caused me to pull away out of shock, not unpleasantness. Behind the thick, dense evergreen forest, Simcoe the Kitty was hiding, doing her micturation business out of sight, but not out of smell. I know you're out there, Kitty! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full. The taste was very dank and pine-like, but rather than making the mistake of going with sweet caramel malts, this had an earthy balance to it that amplified the hops while remaining restrained & unobtrusive. I love AIPAs & when ADIPAs came along, I was quick to embrace them. I soon realized that I was wrong-headed in that, like so many beer styles, not all were created equally. Ann, baby, where are you in my time of need? 8=( Finish was dry, but not gasping, more earthy than hoppy, but a very good entry in the style.

A: Brilliant reddish amber under a 2” sudsy off-white foam collar that grips the side of the glass producing fine sheets of lace.
S: A boquet of citrus, earthiness and spice.
T: Big citrusy hop flavors floating in alcohol and rich malt.
M: Warming alcohol, smooth, big body, medium low carbonation.
O: A nice way to mainline IBUs

Had this on tap at Toronado. Unfortunately it was already my 4th beer of the day so I'm probably not qualified to comment on how alcoholic the beer tasted or smelled.

In any case it poured a nice orange/red color that was pretty clear and had some sticky white head that laced the glass well.

The smell was intensely strong and of hops and more hops. Part citrus but mostly pine. Some sweet malt, well probably a lot of malt if it was noticeable under all those hops. Wonderful.

The taste was similar. It was basically a stronger more rediculous version of their IPA. Very sweet, moderately bitter, very hoppy in every aspect. Great beer all around.

Don't know if this is going to be bottled but I would love to find some of this.

Note: Adapted from notes taken 3/22/13

Comment: Surprised to see this beer on-tap at a restaurant next to my hotel on a recent visit to San Francisco (for a conference, which really cut into my drinking time)

Appearance: Clear, bright orange with a touch of gold - big, fluffy white head, leaves a nice web of great lacing

Smell: Tons of citrus, with an emphasis on oily rind - juicy orange and grapefruit - loads of oily citrus rinds, zest, and pith - some wet pine - very floral - some malts, with some sweetness, caramel and pale - some pretty obvious alcohol

Taste: Surprisingly burly, wouldn't quite describe this as a West Coast hop bomb - sticky, oily citrus and wet pine resin - almost syrupy in its oily citrus aspect - unrelenting grapefruit rinds everywhere, remarkably bitter - earthy - sweet caramel malts seem to be amplified by the alcohol, which honestly seems beyond the advertised 9% - very noticeable

Mouthfeel: On the heavy side of medium, sticky, oily, decent carbonation but could use some more to deal with the oil

Overall: Good, not fantastic

This is quite interesting. A big, harsh IPA with an emphasis on bitter, oily citrus. It's a bit too sweet, and is lacking the fleshy, juicy, hoppy magic that I associate with West Coast IPAs. Definitely interesting and worth a try. I'm not certain how fresh this was, since it was on tap, and I might want to re-evaluate for a bottle.

Bottled: unk
Amber with a scattered etching of off white foam and a loose, soapy rim. Mangos, peaches, cat piss, bits of pine and bubble gum. Flavor is sweet and bitter with good fruity undertones and plenty of sweet biscuit malt. There are notes of resin, pine, apple blossom, alcohol sharpness and pineapple. Medium bodied with easy, soft carb and an off dry finish. Nice beer – I’d drink this again.

Had to pick this up after reading all the typical hype, i think i'm old eneough to see every package change from these guys and have always wanted these guys to succeed, and i think this beer is getting them in the right direction. For one of the trendiest over done styles out there, this beer is solid eneough, but also unique enough to differentiate itself. Pour was a deep amber with a chunky head, smell matched the taste, big citrus, malty middle and slight boozy finish. What I liked about this beer was the malty finish that didn't hide the 9%, but eased you through it. Good stuff.

Poured into a tlip a nice brown hue with some copper highlights at the bottom and the edges. Khaki head leaves some very clingy lacing the whole way down.

Hops run the aroma with citrus being the biggest player. Grapefruit and tropical fruit are the most dominate.

Taste is a nice hoppy pineapple, mango and pine mix. Enough of a malt sweetness that it doesn't allow the hops to be too aggressive. The balance is wonderful and this is the best DIPA I've had in awhile.

Drinkability is pretty good for such a big beer. Alcohol isn't really present in the taste, but it does show up when I first stood up from my bar stool. Mouthfeel was resinous and almost sticky. Definately coated the whole palate. Glad I got to try this and can't wait to get my hands on some more.

Poured reddish-brown color with good clarity. The head quickly dissipated. Not much of an aroma to the beer which was a bit surprising. Very balanced/conservative flavor...I wish there was more up front hop flavor, but there is a good sweet-bitter finish. In the end, a very simple DIPA. Good, but not great.

Bottle from Chris. Thanks, dogg!

Darker than I like my DIPAs to be, this beer is a moderate amber color with a big, off-white head with nice retention and lacing. Clarity is great. The nose seems to have fallen off, as it mostly is a lot of crystal malt. Sweet with brown sugar and caramel, there is a modest hop profile as well, with pine and candied oranges. A moderate tangerine character is present as well. Decent.

The palate opens with a blend of moderate bitterness and moderate sweetness. Mostly crystal malt with a lot of caramel and burnt sugar sweetness, this is sweeter than I typically care for. The bitterness is smooth, with pine and candied grapefruit. Hop flavor seems minimal, and mostly citrusy. This feels lighter than a beer this sweet should taste, probably due to the ABV? Medium in body medium-light in body, this beer is decent. Despite not having the characteristics I typically look for in a DIPA, I am quite liking this.

A: Deep, cloudy/murky, golden-amber-orangish in color...with a very thin, slightly dirty layer of bubbles floating on top....lively action, bubbling up from all around.

S: Reminds me somewhat of Lagunitas Kronic on the nose [and taste]... a good dose of malt & hops blend..hints of pine?

T: Similar to nose....Dry, bitter finish to a real malty double IPA... this one's a good "in betweener.." Drink one of these in between a couple of super hop bombs to balance out your palate :)

M: Smooth, bubbly....feels active in the mouth.

O: Pretty good DIPA. Reminds me how vastly differently they all can be, and how I can appreciate each and everyone

Lucky enough to snag this one from a BIF, my first.. Thanks Stuart!!
