22ozer in to a tulip.

Wasn't what I was expecting. Based on name and Abv, I was expecting something to punch me up side my noggin. Instead the beer was much more of a malt bomb. Beautiful amber colored beer w/ an off white head. Taste follows nose, citrus and tons of malt. Big, sweet, malty body. Nothing extraordinary about the malt profile. Grapefruit, citrus hoppiness carries through the palate. Minimal earthiness and dankiness detected. The hops seem rather toned down when compared to the malts. This beer is full bodied w/ a heavy, thick mouthfeel. Alcohol is covered well. This coupled with the big maltiness makes this a very drinkable beer. For a IIPA, I wanted more hops, less malt. If this were a blind tasting I would have guessed this was more of an American style Barleywine. I love Drake's beer, they put out some great stuff. Like this one, don't love it. If your looking for a big, hoppy beer, skip this one. Would not deny if someone was buying or pouring, but probably would not buy again.

22oz bomber poured into Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a clear amber with a large, foamy, beige colored head.

S: Grapefruit, Pine, and some sweet malt.

T: Grapefruit and pine mostly. A decent malt presence that exhibits a spicyness. A little alcohol is detectable, and is also quite bitter.

M: Medium body, high carbonation. Bitter with a slight spicey burn.

O: I dig the spicyness of this DIPA. Unfortunately, I prefer my IPAs on the more 'unbalanced' side, and the bitterness is a little over the top for me.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Consumed at exactly three months after bottling.

A: Hazy caramel color. Fine bubbled off white head retains well at an inch in height. Lots of stubborn lacing.

S: Melon rind, kiwi, pineapple, soft pine aromas. Hints of pine tar and resin. Wafts of toasty malt and thin runny caramel.

T: Fat malt flavors of toasty malt and caramel. Waves of resin and pine. Undercurrents of pineapple, orange, and honeydew melon. Traces of alcohol. Moderate bitterness. Balanced finish of caramel malt flavors and lingering piney bitterness.

M: Substantially fat and round malt texture. A bit chewy even. Mild astringency. A slight tingle of alcohol. Moderate carbonation. Very round and smooth.

O: Very well balanced. It reminds me of a Bear Republic brew. Lots of great hop flavor, but they weren't afraid to give it a voluptuous malt body. I can see myself making this a go-to brew if the price was right.
