Date on the bottle says 03/19/13, making this bottlealmost a full year old. You expect it to taste sweeter by the smell. The nose smells like goji berries, canned mandarin oranges, and breakfast cereal. There's a distinctly spicy and peppery taste to this beer! Lots of boozy warmth and candy sugar, cut by a citrusy, orange zest bitterness. Pretty heavy in the mouth, feeling oily and thick and making the carbonation feel less active in the mouth. Not bad at all, I just wish I cold try a fresh bottle to know what it's supposed to taste like.

Aroma: A slight metallic tang to the aroma. A strong hop aroma that is a mix of cat-box, vegetal greenery and citrus.

Flavor: Sweet malt with some caramel and bread up front, but quickly overtaken by a firm bitterness. As it warms I get a nice citrus marmalade flavor and alcohol becomes apparent. Slightly astringent finish but enough booze and malt to balance it. I got more harsh alcohol and burn as I have more of it, and decided I couldn't have more than one glassful of it.

Look: Pours with large, off-white (orange hue) head with small, equal bubbles. Has good slow retention, mostly diminishing - thick layer stays on top for the whole ride. Leaves a fair amount of lacing. Color is deep, dark amber, light haze. Looks nice.

Smell: Tropical, canned pineapple, then the herbal, earthy, floral comes to nose. Also some pine, grapefruit, wood. Moderate sweet caramel with light alcohol to detect. Also slightly spicy.

Taste: Starts fresh, pine, grapefruit, tropical, then moderate almost heavy middle molasses-honey malt backbone - a bit too heavy, overrides the fresh start. Continues with light alcohol spike and a weird tropicalish, floral, earthy sweet spike (dry pineapple candy) and ends with medium to high bitterness. It softly stays with you for a while, which is nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with medium carbonation - suiting. Also very light alcohol warming.

Overall: Smells good, the taste gets a bit weird and too heavy on the malt sweetness. Overrides the freshness. Still, a solid take on DIPA, worth a try.
