Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
As we approached our 1500th batch in San Leandro, the brewers decided to attempt something different. They set out to make a pale ale with a clean, stripped down malt bill and plenty of late addition hops that would give the beer huge flavors and aromas of bright citrusy American hops without overwhelming the balance with bitterness. The resulting beer packed the aromatic and flavorful hop punch of a West Coast-style IPA at a very easy drinking 5.5% ABV. The brewer and the people loved it. Now 1500 is a Drake’s flagship beer.

Bottled 1/31/18, consumed 3/4/18

Poured crystal clear pale straw with a small had that left no lacing.

Aroma is a great mix of pine and citrus fruit, some sweet malt and danky hops to balance.

Taste is a pleasant blend of everything from the aroma.

Mouthfeel is medium for a pale ale, great balance and drinkability, nice firm pleasant bitterness.

Overall, this is an outstanding pale ale featuring a couple of my favorite hops in Simcoe and Amarillo - I love the flavor profile from this pairing. One of my favorite pale ales for sure.

a pretty classic west coast style dry hopped pale ale here, appreciably hoppy without being too strong, oily, bitter, or intense. an old school session type beer that has all day potential and is interesting and robust enough to remain interesting at the same time, awesome balance to it, and a great food beer, which extends it even more. golden in color, foaming white head on top, lots of visible carbonation from the tap. the smell has a little pine to it, fresh for sure, but also a distinct citrus zest quality, more lemon to me than orange or grapefruit, not at all bitter or intense to me, but pleasant and fresh. the flavor is the same on the hop side, simcoe hops likely leading the way here, at least thats what i reckon. the malt base is really simple and clean, a pale two row and a pinch of light crystal may well be all, its lightly biscuity without any real sweetness to it, supportive of the hops, and light in body, perfect for the style. no yeast character here to speak of at all. the more beers i have from drakes, the more i realize they have these hoppy styles down, this is excellent, if just a little samey and conventional. good stuff, easy as can be.

My first Drakes, glad to savor their flagship.
a) Hazed golden body with bumpy white head that resolves into a film and laces mightily.
s) Citrusy, juicy, cidery, hop forward, piney.
t) Hoppy start (pine, citrus, grass, cider) laid on a caramel malt base. Textures of white grapefruit rind, orange peel, pine resin landing in a curvy, waving, sun-baked grassy finale.
f) peppery, dry, nice bite, slightly thin.
o) A hoppy APA at sessionable levels, try 24.

This beer gets nowhere near the amount of love it should...gotta drink it fresh though. Pours a west coast hazy pale body with a fluffy white head that lingers. Aroma is lightly tropical and piney, some medium biscuit underneath. Crisp and clean flavor, nice lingering bitter bite with a medium body. Fantastic pale ale.

A: Lots of citrus, pine and light berry hop notes upfront, with a light malt sweetness.

A: Light orange color, totally clear, with a moderately thin white head that has adequate retention, light lacing in the glass.

T: Bright citrus, pine and light berry hop flavors, very crisp, with light malt support and a moderately-light hop bitterness.

M: Medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Tasty; the beer is crisp and clean with a great citrusy hop aroma and flavor – sessionable and easy to drink.

From a 12 oz bottle dated 4/4/17. Pours orange with a finger of white head. Slightly sour citrus smell. Light feel. Taste has a malt foundation, some citrus and grassy hop flavor, and a bitter finish.
