Enjoyed at the 2010 Hayward Bistro DIPA Festival.

Amber pour with a bright white foamy head. Major grapefruit aroma which is very nice and clean. A lot of citrus blasts in the taste which is very smooth and there is another kick of grapefruit on the swallow which leaves a nice bitterness on the buds...begging for another sip. Smooth mouthfeel and at 9.25% the drinkability is dangerously easy.

Overall I am a big fan of Drake's and this did not disappoint. A great tasting DIPA that is worth searching for. Well done.

The Beers of California

#63

Bottled Date: 1/29/13

A: Orange with some haze and head of white foam towers up after a solid pour and stubbornly sticks around and to the glass.

M: The nose is remarkably fresh with pine and tangerine dominance and hints of tropical breeze. The malt is there: baked bread and caramelized sugar.

T: The malt seems to strike first with a deep caramel breadiness which is both separate and supportive, while at the same time unified, with the hop earthiness and freshness. There is flowers, pine and tangerine which carries on to a cleansing hot bitterness.

M: The feel is as expected; medium bodied with linger that never seems to stop and carbonation on the aggressive side but in a pleasing way.

O: Jumped on a bottle after a recommendation from the guy at the bottle shop. I enjoyed this brew from Drake's which adds another solid DIPA to the already stellar West Coast class and will definitely grab another when fresh and available.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. This is my 100th DIPA rating.

The beer pours a golden color with a white head. The aroma is great. I get a ton of hop presence, mainly getting resin, pine and citrus notes.

The flavor is equally as good. I get a lot of grapefruit and pine notes, as well as some orange citrus. There is a little bit of bready malt in the beer, but this is all about the hops. Medium bitterness and very easy drinking.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. An outstanding Double IPA and more than worthy of being my 100th rating.

Tap @ Toronado San Diego. Pours hazy orange-gold with a ring of white bubbles and an oily top. Sweet, fresh-picked pink grapefruit and oranges with a lot of pine in the nose. More of an earthy character than perfume. Heavier mouthfeel, slick and oily, with light carbonation. Lovely resin-and-grapefruit taste. Flows well with the pine oil and hints of oranges and pineapple. Normal caramel malt to balance it, without making the beer "candied" in terms of the citrus. No biscuits, a fair amount of booze. Lovely, hope they bottle this one.

Resiny, minty, grassy nose with light fruit and citrus. Pours brilliant gold under a 1” lacy persistent foam cap. It has a rich, malty entrance with fruit followed by rich hop flavors finishing with a peach bittered by hops with traces of citrus. There is also some hoppy vegetal astringency in the finish which has a drying effect. This is a big beer with a very creamy body and very fine soft carbonation.

Thanks to popery/familynight for tossing this great extra in.

Hopocalypse is a bright, pale golden with great sticky lacing. It has a sweet grainy biscuity malt with orange blossom floral aromas. The beer is pretty dry with a nice nice and juicy orange finish. I really enjoyed this beer and would definitely appreciate more.

Drake's definitely makes some vibrant glowing ipas, and this one is no exception.

Great mix of many citrus smells here, variety, you really get a bouquet (sic?) of fruit, orange, lemon, lime, banana even, just lush. Always have to give a tip of the cap to the breweries that do the dry hopping this extensive and keep prices down on the bottles ($6).

Taste, sure, there's some heat and sweet on this, but its still a really good mildly great double ipa. The bitterness isn't egregious, it allows the floral fruit hop vibe chill and the malt backbone and sweetness are riding cargo.
Another winner by Drake's. This and Denogginizer are pretty much like, flip of the coin always, win, for me.

Appearance is a clear copper with a thin beige lacing on the top.

Smells like tangerines and oranges.

Taste is sweet and fruity with a minor metallic bitterness at the end. Pretty malt driven.

Mouthfeel is light to medium with pleasant carbonation.

Excellent
