Looks like I'm the first to review from a bottle. Poured from a 22oz into a pint. Pours a clear orange amber with two inches of head, great lacing.
Pretty mellow smell for being above 100 IBUs. Though it's mellow it is still pretty interesting. Citrus (grapefruit, orange), grass, flowers and some pale malts in the background.
The taste is also pretty subdued for the 100+ IBUs and 9.5% ABV. Follows the smell with the slight hint of alcohol. Goes down very smooth.
Very drinkable. A very interesting beer. I expected a bit more of an overwhelming hop flavor after the name and blurb on the brew. Still, it wasn't disappointing at all. I'd grab another soon.

22oz bottle poured into a stemless wine glass. Review is from notes.

Pours a nice copper color, fairly clear, a few bubbles rising to the top of the glass with a nice thick, soapy white head that leaves behind a nice network of sticky lacing. The aroma is of nice piney, herby hops, light citrus with some pale cereal grain. Very earthy on the nose, but not overly dirty, the citrus gives it a nice touch of brightness. The hops are certainly in focus on the tongue, lots of pine and herby, bitter hops, grapefruit, orange peel and some lighter floral flavors, just enough light, sweet, grain on the tongue to help balance the bitterness. The body is nice and rich, lower carbonation, juicy body that has a slightly dry finish.

Verdict: A nice DIPA from Drake's. The hops flavors are a little earthier than I personally care for, but they are fairly well balanced. Worth checking out.

Big thanks to leschkie! Always a pleasure. Poured from a bottle into a tulip.

A - Solid white head on top of a sparkling amber orange beer.

S - Citrus hops dominate at first. Grapefruit, orange, with a little malt lingering in the back. As it warms, some bittering hops come out, muttles the aroma a little however.

T - Big hop bite, with those bittering hops shining through. Not much in the way of citrus hops coming though, just a little on the sides, and a touch in the aftertaste before the bitter takes over. Very bold IIPA. Also ever changing, as your palate fatigues to one hop, it highlights another. Intriguing.

M - It's a full mouthfeel, hops are all over the palate. Carbonation is good and keeps those hops popping.

O - Solid imperial IPA. It is good, maybe not the undeniable drinkability that makes one great. However, if a hophead, this will satisfy you. It hits all over the palate, and has some tasty notes to it. Would definitely drink this again.

2013 batch... 22 oz bottle into Duvel tulip

A - Amber beer with golden highlights. nice two finger white head. Some retention, good lacing. A little darker than I prefer my DIPA's, but still great looking.

S - great citrus and resinous hop aroma. can detect a little bit of the caramel/amber malts. smells so good that it brings a smile to my face.

T - great west coast hop bitterness. not as much hop flavor as aroma or bitterness, but tastes great. Hop flavor is more grassy. Malt backbone is definitely noticeable. A bit of spice, grass, and grapefruit rind in the aftertaste.

M - Nice light mouthfeel. I like the carbonation a little on the high side, and this beer delivers for me.

O - So glad I am trying this fresh, just two days after Hopocalypse weekend at Drake's. I live less than an hour from the brewery and this bottle was delivered to my favorite market today. This is a really good Imperial IPA that is worth trying. It is a little darker and grassier than some of my personal favorite DIPA's, but I enjoyed the heck out of it anyway. Incredibly drinkable.

Pours a hazy murky copper orange. Full, off-white head.

Leafy somewhat dank hops, orange rind. Definitely some peppery spicy hops.

Taste, woof. Huge resiny hops. Lots of pine on the finish, some lingering grapefruit. Big malt backbone that stands up to the hops well. Slight alcohol presence but the the hops overwhelm it before it's really noticeable.

Mouthfeel is very full bodied with some crisp stinging carbonation. Very sticky.

Overall this is a gigantic IPA. Have no idea how the black label is gonna be bigger than this. Hops all over the place, hard to sift through for me, but that's how I like it.

From 04/16/14 notes. Thanks to BeerLawyer85 for sharing this one. 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

a - Pours a murky, amber-yellow color with two inches of fluffy off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of pine hops, citrus hops, fruity malts, grapefruit, resin, earthy notes.

t - Tastes of pine hops, bready malts, dough, citrus hops, grapefruit, fruity malts, earthy malts. Taste is good but definitely maltier than the nose, with a lot of bread and dough.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. No bitter bite to it.

o - Overall I thought this was a really good beer. Definitely not a hop bomb and as hoppy as a lot of IPA's these days, but it was tasty so who cares. No bitterness and easy to drink, worth checking out.

15 day old bottle

Pours out a clear orange body with a thick yellow tinged white head. Plenty of lace. Head retention is around average.

The nose is full of hoppy goodness. Pine and grapefruit peel are prominent. Some more tropical like flavors of pineapple and such. Malt peeks through sweet, bready, and spicy from the rye.

Big prominent resinous pine flavors. Grapefruit is up next playing a large part like in the aroma. Lighter tropical fruit notes. Just enough complimentary sweet and bready malt comes through.

Pretty full body for a DIPA and the carbonation is a little low which makes for a big creamy feel. Fairly large bitterness hits and the beer finishes slightly dry but is just so mouthwatering.

Really nice DIPA that I'm glad I got to try.

Pours an almost-clear, orangish gold color with a medium white head that disappears quickly. Scent is straight pineapple right of the front, then it fades into grapefruit and other citrus flavors with some mellow hop aromas. A bit of pine as well. Taste is very lovely! A nice blend of citrus hops and nice pine flavors. Sweet pineapple and bitter grapefruit mix very well with the bittering hops. Nice bitter, piney finish with a bit of alcohol detection. Mouthfeel is nice and full bodied with a refreshing finish...a little sticky throughout. Drinkability is high. Overall, this is a tasty, very drinkable double IPA.

Enjoyed at the 2010 Hayward Bistro DIPA Festival.

Amber pour with a bright white foamy head. Major grapefruit aroma which is very nice and clean. A lot of citrus blasts in the taste which is very smooth and there is another kick of grapefruit on the swallow which leaves a nice bitterness on the buds...begging for another sip. Smooth mouthfeel and at 9.25% the drinkability is dangerously easy.

Overall I am a big fan of Drake's and this did not disappoint. A great tasting DIPA that is worth searching for. Well done.

New Beer Friday! Had on-tap at FO in Santa Monica.

Appearance - A few buddies of mine had some PtE at the same time I ordered this so for comparison purposes, this was a darker, tangerine colored beer over PtE, with about a finger and a half of head that lingers around for a while but leaves a bit lackluster lacing.

Smell - Extremely hoppy and citrusy. Definite grapefruit and orange peel in the nose with lighter hop presence. I enjoy the fact I can smell a beer in a bar and not be looked at funny :D

Taste - As alexd said beneath me, this was a bit of a sloppier brew. There is a lot going on here flavor wise and it was pretty damn good, having a more citrus front (though not passion fruit, more bitter citrus) which is finished up by bitter hops and an ironic cloying sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Extremely creamy and decently carbonated. I actually liked the sticky mouthfeel on this (much more than PtE which I had right after).

Drinkability -Relatively so. I tasted just a hint of alcohol when I first started drinking it. Not sure of the abv, however. A good beer to try but with PtE on tap right next to it, "why fix something when it ain't broke".

No freshness date that i can tell. Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

A- Pours a golden copper color. A little bit hazy, super creamy white head. A little bit of lacing on the side of the glass.

S- Well there is definitely citra hops in here. Super fresh aromas, pine, melons, tropical fruit, citrus, pineapple, malts. Its all here. Smells absolutely incredible.

T- On the front there is a sharp citrus bite, very sweet. Mid palate is where you get alot of sweet pineapple and citrus fruits, and holding up the rear is the bitterness. Super bitter on the back end and leaves lingering hop flavors. Can detect quite a bit of alcohol on the back as well.

M- Unusually creamy. Slick thin mouthfeel. Ridiculously drinkable.

O- A first from drakes, and ive got to say, im impressed. An above average DIPA that i am glad to have regular access to.

O-A solid, balanced easy drinking IPA.

On pour a fairly decent white head formed. Once it subsided a thin layer of micro-bubbles hung out on the surface. The color is a a nice honey color. The beer has a nice bouquet. The hops are nice and fruity. The flavor is very similar sharp up front then fading nicely after swallowing. The beer is nicely carbonated and full bodied.

Overall this is a very enjoyable beer. I think the brewer is doing a nice job of balancing the hope flavors so its not too overpowering. The smell and flavors are very pleasant and make for an enjoyable beer.

A: Deep orange with amber hues in the center, 1/2 finger carbonation, moderate lacing, a bit darker than most double ipas, but a bit cloudier

S: bright aggressive hop profile, cirtusy and bitter to the nose. Not quite overbearing in the juniper/herbal notes.

T: very balances hop profile, not overbearing, not entirely cirtusy either, very light with a quick bitter finish, a profile that transfers from lemon to grassy, without a long standing lingering hop profile.

M: The mouthfeel is exactly where it should be for the style, light finish with a biscuity middle to it that lingers for a bit, doesnt overcoat the mouth so that you welcome the next sip, almost to the point of drinking it too fast. I prefer this to the Denoginnizer Imperial because I feel like I can drink this without so much of a traumatic profile.

D: I dont usually throw this around, but its an incredibly drinkable beer, it feels like a bolder pale ale simply due to its trojan horse character that sends 9% abv and aggressive fast moving hops right into the Troy of your mouth. I am certainly able to drink well beyond the 22oz bottle. It's an even more dangerous candidate given the relatively afforable price. Good luck finding a series of bottles to support that endeavor. I enjoy this beer but in LA its not too simple to find large

Pours a hazy and bright orange color with a thin off white head.

Aromas are resiny, with some pine, and lots of mixed citrus. Mostly oranges and grapefruit. While this smells good, I was hoping for more, just seems slightly subdued.

Taste packs a punch, but remains nicely balanced. Bitter up front, resiny, with some sharp citrus, nectarines, and bit herbal too. Nice backdrop of caramel sweetness. Finish is warm with more hoppiness and a touch of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is smooth and full bodied.

Overall a well crafted DIPA. Very well balanced, and dangerously drinkable. Very good stuff.

2013 bottle into a tulip glass-

Poured nice clear auburn color w/ a finger of white head that dissipated quickly.

Solid aroma - citrus, grassy, some tangerine maybe, w/some malt aroma.

Malty caramel character present throughout the rush of hops when tasting. Getting some fresh bitter hops here and although I feel there's a good malt to hop balance I find the malts to be slightly more present than expected.

Medium body, a bit resiny and lightly carbonated.

Malt lingers on the finish with a zesty hint from the hops. Slightly sweet, sugary notes.

Overall - way too easy to drink :) but cant say it's my favorite for it's style. Expected more hop character but not sure if bottle date had anything to do with that and date is not printed on bottle for reference. That said, quite enjoyable and worth trying.

Apricot pour that is semi translucent, fluffy one finger head, solid lacing in the tulip.

Aroma is that of graham crackers and candied grapefruit peel, slightly herbal too.

Quite a solid hit of honey graham cracker followed by a counterbalance of grapefruit peel bitterness with a touch of rye spice that lingers about. The 9.3% is well masked in the sweet to bitter swallow. The rye is nicely integrated into the mix, and for those not previously a fan of rye as an ingredient, this may change your mind.

Mouthfeel is medium heavy due to the hefty malt base, carbonation is well done.

Overall, this is a solid IIPA though a touch heavy on the malt base. The flavors are interesting but a bit on the one dimensional side, yet one of the more enjoyable "balanced" IIPAs that I've had.
