8/2/2012

July 2012 batch. Snifter.

A: Burnished yellow with a finger of white froth. Good retention and scattered lacing.

S: Excellent tropical nose, with notes of papaya, gooseberry, pineapple, and mango. Floral character mingles with light orange and apricot aromatics. Malt is crackery and faint.

T: Big hop flavor with a smooth moderate bitterness. The beer is dry but not astringent or palate wearying. Fruit is explosive, reminiscent of papaya, passion fruit, gooseberry, apricot, grapefruit, and orange. Excellent flavor.

M: Upper light in body with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry and sticky.

Overall: A worthy brother of Aroma Coma. An excellent beer that showcases great New Zealand and Australian hops.

This pours a glowing light amber/orange color with generous foaming that leaves laces. It has a zesty, spicy, tropical aroma from the New Zeeland hops. It’s vibrant and dynamic and fresh smelling with a great tropical fruit flavoring as well. I found some guavaberry and a touch of papaya on the back end coming across in layers. The beer has an upfront bitterness that finishes dry with a touch of pine. So good I had to get a second pint.

Big thanks to eyebereej for sharing this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into pint glass.

A: A hazy orangeish-copper, with about one finger's worth of white head with nice lacing. Good amount of visible carbonation.

S: Very nice & complex hop profile - citrus, grass, pine, some tropical fruit/mango, dank, sweat, and light malt in the background.

T: Primarily pine, tropical fruit, moist grass and citrus hops, but the profile is again complex. There is a caramel malt sweetness but there is no doubt this one is hop forward. Pithy, moderately bitter hang on the front of the tongue.

M: Nice weight, maybe a little heavier than standard for an IPA. Carbonation as expected for style.

O: This is definitely tasty. I went back & forth for some time as to whether I preferred it to the Aroma Coma or not. Finally, I decided I would love to have more of either of them, so perhaps it doesn't really matter. Highly recommended.

On tap at Drake's Barrel House from the weekend of the release.

Pours a light gold/amber with tight cap of head that dissipates fairly quick, decent lacing.

Blend of pine, lemon/orange citrus, grapefruit, and less dank/more floral than Aroma Coma, but the addition of NZ hops makes this better than its sister beer. Nice mellow berry, wine grapes & melon make this irresistible.

Taste is a pretty balanced mix of grapefruit/orange citrus, white wine grapes, melon, salmonberries, lychee, herbal/grassy flavors in the mid palate and some dank notes on the finish. Bitterness builds well and lingers just enough in the finish. Feels bigger than the listed 75 IBUs.

Body is another highlight, has that slight slickness that I find characteristic of Drake's hoppy beers. Finishes semi-dry with minimal alcohol heat.

This beer just confirms that I love those crazy Kiwi hops. They add a new dimension of aroma and flavor that elevate this over Aroma Coma.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a Sierra Nevada 30th anniversary glass.

A: Pours a light golden color with a thin white head.

S: Light citrus, orange and pineapple.

T: Loads of hops over a slightly sweet mast base. Hops are in the form of light citrus and tropical fruits. Pineapple, orange, apricots, papaya, etc. Finish is slightly bitter.

M: Medium bodied, average carbonation.

O: An outstanding IPA. Great contrast between the hop profile of Aroma Coma.

A - Pours a slightly hazy golden-orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and other tropical fruits with some pine hop, and some caramel and biscuit malts.

T - Starts off with some grapefruit, pineapple, and other tropical fruits hop flavor with some bitterness and some sweet caramel malts. Through the middle, some pine hops and a bit of spicy hop flavor comes through with some biscuit malts. The finish is a mix of tropical and piney hops and bitterness with some sweet bready malts.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry and bitter finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice hop profile with good bitterness. Very good overall balance.

Fresh (1 day old) bomber from the 2012 batch.

Appearance: Pale golden body with an inch of froth atop. Slightly hazy. Looks like IPA, strangely enough.

Smell: Big floral hop notes backed by tropical fruit and white grape. Has a lot of that signature dankness you'd expect from nelson and motueka. Nelson stands out but isn't dominant. Smells more gentle than Aroma Coma, and in some ways it's a bit nicer.

Taste & mouthfeel: Pleasantly soft and mellow compared to Coma, the NZ hops seem to contribute less bitterness. There's a ton of great hop flavor here, primarily floral with plenty of white grape, gooseberry and pineapple beneath. The body is light and crisp, while malt remains non-existent from start to finish. There's a pleasantly mellow hop bite to the finish that's uniquely floral.

Overall: The NZ hop bill transforms Coma into a completely different but equally enjoyable beer. Great stuff.
