Poured into a pint glass, the appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a thin finger’s worth of off white foamy head that dissipated at a moderate pace. Mild lace. The aroma had some roast, caramel, some pine, light grassy hop. Then some toast and a mild earthiness. The flavor seemed to combine decently the previously mentioned aromas, somewhat sweetly with a touch of the roastiness. Lingering semi-smooth yet roasty sort of aftertaste rolling into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Moderate carbonation felt fine. Though the ABV felt as projected, it did seem somewhat low for the style. Overall, seems like an Americanized schwarzbier. It’s decent as is, but don’t expect the true German qualities of a real schwarzbier to impress you with this beer.

On tap at the pub, Dark Star is chestnut brown with a wispy off-white skim of head leaving very light lace.

Smell is muted caramel.

Taste is also mostly light caramel, with some toast and a bitter finish. I had to doulbe check that this wasn't the brown, but the small sample they poured me ensured it was in fact a different beer.

Mouthfeel is crisp, with a medium-light body.

Drinkability is pretty good enough, but is more like a dark mild ale then a schwarz, otherwise I'd score it all 4s.
