All of the Hy-Vee stores in Sioux Falls have a surprisingly excellent collection of craft beer, though given that it is primarily a supermarket, staff turnover seems to limit the depth of knowledge of the staff. This specific store probably has the most space allocated to craft, and is conveniently located, so I primarily visit this one. I was in the store when Abyss arrived around December 30th, and the clerk offered to sell me a couple. Being new to craft, I turned it down because I had not heard of it, but came back and got some as soon as I looked it up.

HyVee actually has a very nice beer selection for a grocery store. I've been pleasantly surprised at a few finds on their shelves.

A few that are currently available:

St. Bernardus
Boulevard Smokestack
Plus, all the usuals

Overall, its a pretty decent collection of imports with a few good American craft beers. I certainly can't complain about what HyVee has to offer. Its great to know that I can pick up a nice bottle or two when I'm out grabbing groceries.

The service is about as you would expect. I'm sure the staff has no idea how many great brews are sitting on their shelves.

I was recently back in my home state of SD for Thanksgiving and was trying to find some good places to get beer. I used to frequent the old Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits store up the street, but now they have moved down the street into the new grocery store. It is a pretty good sized place w/ mostly wines and liquors. There is a reasonable selection of beer though. Probably one of the best I've seen in Sioux Falls. They of course have a wide variety of macros, but they do carry a great deal of imports and micros. As for the micros there are several varieties of O'Dells, Boulder Beer, Summit, Schell, Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Boulevard, Leines (I don't really consider this a micro anymore though), and Spanish Peaks. There are also a lot of Rogue singles and some six packs of their more popular beers. They carry several Anchor styles as well. As for Imports, they have the usual suspects, but do also carry a wide variety of Samuel Smiths. There are a few random Belgians, but none of the big players like Chimay. There are some mini-kegs of some German beers I've never dabbled in. Interestingly they have a nice variety of russian beers, including Balticka #6, a baltic Porter. The employees will approach you to help, but the help they give is not that great. One guy recommended that I try the Leine's Apple Spice (I almost walked out then). Overall, this is a must visit if you are in Sioux Falls or living in SD and need good beer. If you are passing through, it would be worth a stop as well.

Update: I’ve been to this store about six times and the selection changes a bit each time. Since my last visit (about a year before) they have added Erdinger products and Unibroue 4-packs. I was really happy to see Sam Adams Longshot six-packs and a Baltic Porter I’ve never tried (Baltika #6 Porter). I have always found something new to purchase. Worth a visit if you find yourself in Sioux Falls…

Original Review (01-19-2004):

This is a well-lit, clean store. Enough parking.

I was surprised at the selection. They had beer that I cannot get in Omaha, a city three times the size of Sioux Falls. What the hell is up with that! The beer is found on the back wall cooler and sidewall walk-in cooler. Many micros from the Northern Midwest, Schell, Summit, Leinenkugel, James Page, plus the Chicago “micro” Goose Island, they had SA Chocolate Bock and the Brewmaster sampler with the Scotch Ale and AB’s World Select. Yellowstone, Boulevard, Big Sky, and Sierra Nevada were represented. A couple six-packs of Rogue were to be had. As were a couple odd imported six-packs South/Central America. A few other imports from Germany. No Belgium beer aside from Duvel.

When I visited the store was very busy and the two employees were ringing up cases and cases of beer and wine for a Deli in the area. I understood why I received no help; I didn’t need any anyway. They did chitchat with my girlfriend as I loaded up the car after our purchase. That was cool. They explained to her about the name change and stuff like that.

As far as I am aware this is the best place to buy beer in Sioux Falls, if you are visiting from somewhere outside of the Minnesota/Wisconsin area you will be happy with the selection (as in terms of finding new beer). If you’re a native you can live off of this supply without out complaining much.

Sioux Falls is set up on a grid system so finding your way around is relatively simple. Coming into SF, follow one of the major roads until you get to Minnesota Ave. In between 26th and 33rd, just look for the large Hyvee sign.

First off, South Dakota has limited in its quality of beer and selection as a whole. That said Hyvee has a great selection (that is, relative). The whole store had a good variety of wine hard liquor and of course beer. Most was chilled with the exceptions of most 12 packs. A good selections of Boulevard, Boulder, Schell, Leinie’s, Goose Island, Rogue, Sierra Nevada and Sam Smiths and other a variety of imports.

The prices were pretty cheap for micros. I couln't tell you about the other alcohol selection but still good. The staff of nice but not really informative. Not much that I really needed help with but they were still ok.

Regal Liquors, tucked away in the middle of Sioux Falls provides a great escape for the micro-enthusiast. A recent remodeling of the store makes it a fine choice for several area brews, including Summit, Leinenkugal, and Schell, to name a few. An entire wall of coolers nicely displays several other micros, including Sam Adams, Rogue, and Anchor (always in short supply). What makes the trip enjoyable is the fact that micros are on wide display, while the macro beers are tucked away towards the back corner of the store. The staff is eager, always greeting their customers and knowledgeable in the beer arena. Only a few singles are available, these being Rogue, Corona, Heineken, Guinness (again naming a few), and the single stock doesnt seem to be a big hit, but a great place to pick up a unique six pack. The store also has a very wide variety of wines and hard liquor.
