Service: Can
Canned: I'm guessing Dec-13-2016... (K121613)

A:
Pours opaque black (cola red-black from the can) with big dollop of foamy brown head that settles to a healthy little cap. Concentric lacing rings and good retention. (4.25)

S:
Thick roast malt, fruity sweetness behind, coffee, chocolate, toast, nuts, brown sugar. (4.25)

T:
Vaguely astringent roasty sweetness. Coffee and dark fruits, sharp roasty edge with some lingering sweetness but mainly lingering roast tingle. (4.25)

M:
Rich, on the edge of creamy, substantial, drinkable, little detentable alcohol, medium plus body, lingering hint of astringency. (4.25)

O:
This is a very nice beer if I do say so myself.
It has a ruby-coke color coming out of the can but is opaque black in the glass. It immediately smells like a roastier porter and sports a lovely dirty-tan head that eventually dissipates to a little cap. Both the aroma and the flavor are classic porter but definitely on the roastier side, which makes sense. It is a Robust Porter after all. But I wouldn't complain if it had slightly less of a roasty bite. Honestly I like this about it, but I could see it making it less drinkable on the whole for me. This is an excellent porter and easily among the best porters I have ever had from Canada.
I will definitely seek these guys' beers out in the future. Grab one if you see one! (4.25)

Monster big head, lots of lace on a walnut black brew. Impressive look. Coffee and chocolate on the nose and to taste. A little weak-kneed flavourwise, thin-bodied. Quite palatable, but at tbe end of the day a fairly ordinary porter.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 7 2017 and served barely chilled.

Pours inky black; nearly opaque, save for some tinges of mahogany around the edges when held to the light. Two fingers of foamy, beige-coloured froth is steadily reduced to a dense, creamy cap roughly half a centimetre high, with gobs of lacing produced simultaneously. It's hard to resist taking a sip of something that looks so appetizing. Roasted malts dominate the aroma, which features rich chocolate, cocoa powder and coffee, as well as subtler notes of vanilla, dates, sponge toffee and leafy, English-style hops.

A solid porter, loaded with robust roasted malt flavours. Vaguely fruity hints of plum/prune underlie big notes of chocolate - I'm mostly getting cocoa, with touches of milk chocolate and bitter baker's chocolate. Toasted biscuit, caramel and molasses sweetness also become apparent, with coffee grounds and those leafy, earthy, floral Fuggle hops providing a pleasantly bittersweet character to the finish, which works very nicely. Mildly bitter aftertaste, with some lingering coffee bean roastiness and cocoa notes. Medium body, with relatively low carbonation levels that gently prickle the surface of the palate; the overall texture is smooth and very satisfying. Very impressive.

FInal Grade: 4.24, an A-. Clifford Porter's reputation as a quality porter precedes itself, so I'm happy to report that it handily met all of my expectations - even managing to surpass a few of them. The delicious roasted malt flavours never let up, and the bittersweet notes on the back end are a perfect complement. Simply put, Clifford's is one of the best traditional porters brewed in the province, and anyone who enjoys the style should actively seek some out for a sampling. This brew has never been sold locally, but should that change in the future I can guarantee I'd be picking it up on the regular.

Got this one from hopsolutely this past summer. Cheers!

From a can into a pint glass

APPEARANCE: A clear dark brown pour yields a one finger, looser looking, slightly foamy tan head with good retention. Dark brown body, almost black, with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, thick cap. A full creamy head remains until the end leaving sheets of lacing down the glass. Looks great except the initial head off the pour.

SMELL: Roasted aromas with coffee, milk chocolate, cream and some sweet toffee on the nose. Smells great.

TASTE: Roasted flavors with toffee sweetness and coffee flavors up front. Cream at the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of roasted and slightly burnt malts, milk chocolate, sweet cream, hints of vanilla sweetness and some bitter coffee beans as well. Very nice and plenty flavorful.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a bit mouth-coating. Some bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: Excellent stuff. Totally unassuming can with liquid awesomeness inside. Proof that Ontario, and Waterloo no less, can brew world class beer. Looks and feels great with lots of character and flavor. Well done, Clifford. I’d love to see this stuff on the LCBO shelf all the time. Thanks again, guys! World class stuff.

Look: Pours dark brown with beige/tan one finger head. Foam dissipates slowly leaving a nice ring around the edges after 5 minutes.
Smell: Roasted nuts and dark chocolate
Taste: Dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, a little bitterness, sweet caramel, plenty of roasted malt.
Feel: Creamy and full bodied . Plays mostly on the front of the mouth. It does leave some bitterness on the back end.
This beer is my favourite Ontario brewed porter. I look always look forward to having one. This beer earns an A.

Enjoyed from a standard 473 ml Canadian pint can. It's a rich tasty porter with a bit more coffee than I expected. Some chocolate too -- and roasted malt of course. Thumbs up.

What a pleasant surprise my latest purchase turned out to be!
Yes, the can indicated the beer's 2016 Canadian Brewing Award Gold but one can be forgiven for being skeptical, given the vast number of failures on the Ontario craft beer scene. And while Peche Mortel this is not, it is a darn good alternative, even if it is a tad bit watery.
The nose is exceptional, as is the lasting head. Coffee balances the chocolate perfectly, which is rarely the case. The malt holds everything nicely together and the caramel creates a smooth, creamy and very drinkable beer. At 5.9%, it is also a bit more tender than its counterparts.

Got in a BIF from Coronaeus. 16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 2/6/2019. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy dark ruby red/brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of toffee, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, mint, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/black/roast/bready malts, moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of toffee, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, mint, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery hops; and roast/charcoal bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, dark/brown bread/crust, smoke, charcoal, wood, mint, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great hop/char bitter/sweet balance; and no acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and fairly sticky/resinous/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 5.9%. Overall this is an awesome American porter. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/charred/drying finish. Not aggressively bitter/charred. Outstandingly clean/rich malt complexity, perfectly balanced earthy Fuggle hops, and mild fruity yeast notes. Mild residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and perfect example of the American style. Highly impressive.

20oz pint on tap at a (sort of) Craft beer themed restaurant.
This porter is a nice smooth fairly full-mouthed drink with a good amount of taste & no bitter after taste. Tastes of coffee, caramel, chocolate, biscuit; all subtle & blended together nicely. It reminds me of a favourite of mine: St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout. I drink it here at about 4 deg C while I think it would be nicer when warmer. I warm the glass up in my hands to try to bring the flavours out a bit more but it tastes pretty good as is & won't last that long. Why can't a place like this do a bit of research & serve their beer at the desired temperature? Something about needing to keep the keg cold I assume. That said, what about places serving sealed bottles of porter & stout ice cold? I've been to some pure-bred craft beer places & found they do the same as well. I'm sure there's some reading I could do on that subject but boy it'd be impressive to ask for a bottle of beer at a bar & be asked what temperature I'd like it at!

473 ml tall boy can served reasonably cold into a pint glass. Purchased from the LCBO for just over $3 CDN.

Appearance - Dark brown, near black. A finger and a bit of tan head rests on top, with impressive staying power and leaving behind curtains of lacing.

Smell - Loads of coffee up front, some vanilla, caramel toffee sweetness integrated but subtle, but most of all was the robust coffee aroma.

Taste - Pretty much like the nose. Loads of roasty coffee, hints of vanilla, some dark chocolate and subtle traces of toffee and caramel on the back end.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, but not quite creamy, carbonation is spritzier than most and body a touch thin. Still pretty on point for the style, minor qualms.

Overall Clifford's Porter is a very nice, very roasty representation of the style that has great aroma and flavor profiles. While it lacks the drinkability of other porters out there, the intense coffee flavors make up for it. Certainly worth a tipple.
