i am surprised to see this rated so highly, i thought it was good, but not profoundly so or anything, better maybe as a belgian winter ale or something than as a saison. its really clean and clear amber on the pour, and doesnt have a ton of rustic grain or yeast character to it, almost overly refined, which is not how i think about saison usually, although i like the flavors a lot here and think it works nicely for the season and is a little something different. caramel colored and shiny, crystal clear under a smallish off white head. aroma here is dried citrus peel, belgian yeast esters, crystal or vienna malt of some european persuasion, and a little nuttiness. its not as hearty in flavor as it smells like it should be, kind of simple, almost to a fault on the grain side, a little sweet, and really mild fall spices, nutmeg and anise with the residual sugars. orange peel and dried fruit, a flash of an old fashioned or something, quite pleasant and bright for what it is. i wish for more from the yeast, i mean i like the flavors it contributes here, but its lacking the old world charm i look for in the style and it never quite endears itself to me. good, but not great, and not as drinkable as saison usually is for me. i can imagine some folks loving this, but its not really the kind of saison that moves me.
