Puesta Del SolPuesta Del Sol
Notes: Puesta del Sol, which translates to "sunset" in Spanish, is our own spin on the Vienna lager style with nods to both its Austrian and Mexican roots. We use an equal amount of Vienna and Pilsner malts for the base along with several types of Munich malts to create a soft, delicate malt sweetness. Hallertau hops add just enough bitterness to balance the malt character and work with the lager yeast to produce a clean and complex beer with a crisp, dry finish. Puesta del Sol is a flavorful amber lager that invokes the tranquil experience of a sunset, whether overlooking palaces in Vienna, beaches in Mexico, or peaks in Colorado.

Beautiful clear, dark brown body topped with a thin yet lasting head. Mild toasted grain aroma; a bit nutty. The taste follows along the lines of the aroma, richer and earthier; fine roasted malt quality overall. Medium body; smooth and luxuriant; nice, subdued level of residual sugar body; warm with a a semi-dry finish.

This beer brings some nice, smooth toasted grain taste to the palate with a warming body. Good balance and depth throughout.

Amber color- orange fading upward to mahogany. Thick foam faded to thin head of micro bubbles interspersed with big bubbles. Aroma of Rye bread, raspberry, cherry, toffee, dessert, dates, figs. Palate of wheat and rye bread, malt, molasses, maple syrup, honey, dates, cherry, almonds, smoke, milk chocolate, rich, decadent, malty into a slightly sweet, bitter malt, cedar finish. Pros hit intensity of flavor, high complexity, richness, dark pretty color, crisp light texture. Cons a little rich/sweet- rich dark bread into sweet milk chocolate smokey, roastiness with some bitter piney hops to balance finish, thin head. 87/100.

L - Darker than any "Vienna" Lager I've ever had; guess the name should have been a hint that this is Negra Modelo meets Vienna. Definitely more like NM.
S - Good, toasty malt whiff, with almost some bread in there. Appropriate but kind of funky. Hard to describe.
T - Nope, not for me. Not a Vienna, and not Negra Modelo. Tries to split the difference, and ends up lost on the spectrum (for me).
F - Good carbonation, nice warming and residual sugar and doughy mouthfeel but meh.
O - Not a winner for me, but solid from Weldwerks if you're into this kind of beer.

16 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 12/30/2019. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/copper/orange color with a 1 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of roast, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of roast, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery, roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, roast, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with minimal fruity/yeasty notes. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, fairly crisp/sticky, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.4%. Overall this is an excellent Vienna Lager. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/refreshing to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish; great soft feel. Great clean/rich Vienna/Munich malt showcase; with balancing earthy noble hops. Light residual sweetness with lingering bitter dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive spot on style example as expected of the brewery. No complaints.

Poured out a clear, amber color with an off-white head of foam. It smelled malty and sweet. Tasted sweet with notes of toffee, caramel and toasted malt.

you know a brewery is awesome when even their "boring" or less sexy styles are this good i continue to be impressed with every weldwerks beer not named juicy bits just as much as i am with their now famous ipa. this is a crystal clear, perfectly copper colored, fluffy tan headed radiant amber brew, lagered to near perfection, round and proportional and drinkable and autumnal, what more do you want in the style? smooth body, nice toasted nutty malt base with some of the characteristic european lager sweetness, but a pretty flavorful and hard working yeast strain that crisps this up a little more than most vienna style larger. a grassy hop note to balance in the finish, bread and toast underneath, a beautiful richness without too much residual sugar. fine carbonation, more body than normal, hearty even, just really dialed in. its not always the most exciting beer on the menu, but if you do not enjoy this beer, you do not enjoy vienna lager. this is about as good a version of the style as i have had from an american brewery.

From a 12 oz can (canned April 7, 2017) to nonic glass. Reviewed from notes dated June 24, 2017.

A-The beer is a good looking medium-amber brown in the glass. It is mostly clear and I can see just a bubble or two of carbonation. The head is tan and fades quickly from a finger in height to a thin film. Some stray lacing clings to the glass.

S-The aroma is grain forward with assertive notes of barley grain, husk, bread crust, and a light grassy hop kick. This beer is crying out for a lime.

T-The taste is similar to the smell. I notice grain flavors, some bread crust, and a light, grassy hop note. There is a bit of nuttiness in the malts, but the flavor dries out somewhat on the finish. It seems to be missing that hint of yeast that I associate with a Vienna lager.

M-The body is lighter in heft than some beers in this style with a higher than average volume of semi-crisp carbonation. It is drinkable and not overly filling.

O-This is a decent summertime beer and would go well with Mexican food as a stand-in for Corona or something. That being said, I would take a Negra Modelo instead.
