Notes: The blend for this batch was selected from freshly emptied 10-year American oak rye whiskey barrels used to age Medianoche for 18 months. These rye whiskey barrels are some of the most complex and interesting casks we have gotten our hands on, which were used to age whiskey made from 100% unmalted rye for over 10 years, imparting notes of butterscotch, vanilla, black cherries, and allspice. After 18 months of aging in the rye whiskey barrels, we conditioned this batch of Medianoche on copious amounts of Madagascar and Ugandan vanilla beans for over 3 months, contributing notes of sweet tobacco, milk chocolate, and brownie batter.

650 mL bottle. Inky black body. Smells of vanilla, booze, whiskey, rye, smells sweeter, too. Tastes of rye up front, vanilla behind it. Whiskey permeates. Rye comes back in the back end with a hefty spiciness. Heavy and boozy. Doesn't have the depth of rye flavor that the Rye without vanilla has. The vanilla is overpowering here and does not contribute more than it detracts.

2019 vintage; drank 6/22/19 @ Golgi Apparatus.

This was good, but far from great; the base beer was swallowed up by the rye barrel and the vanilla tasted more like a syrup than a bean.

Not one to chase down, in my opinion.

This was really good--creamy vanilla pairing perfectly with spicy wooden rye while avoiding any heat you might expect, going down smoothly round with a satisfyingly deep, dark exhale.
