Thanks, Nick!

Got this from Nick on his recent trip to San Diego. He always brings good stuff and this time was no exception. WeldWorks has just been murdering it with all of their releases. I’d only reviewed two, giving Juicy Bits a 4.08 and Fruity Bits (Peaches & Cream) a 3.98. This one was described on the can as a “New England-Style Double IPA Brewed w/ Galaxy & El Dorado Hops.” Untappd’s longer description was, “Bursting with notes of passion fruit, pineapple, and mango, from the nearly 9 lbs of Galaxy and El Dorado hops per bbl, Space Cowboy is the highest ABV New England-style Double IPA (bordering on Triple IPA territory) we have produced, and one of the most complex. But despite the aggressive hop character and higher alcohol, it is dangerously smooth and balanced. A soft cloud of tropical flavors floating through the ethereal nethers of the universe into your glass to bathe you in the flavors of the esoteric Space Cowboy. The higher alcohol ropes you into a soul warming corral to protect you from the cold reaches of the expanse.” Sounds like a sweet combination. Was really looking forward to it.

Poured a straw-to-pale hazy color with two fingers of frothy white head. Calm setting underneath with no noticeable bubbles. Outstanding uneven lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled Galaxy, trash, sugary mango, passion fruit, pineapple, white grapefruit, melon, watermelon, tropical fruit punch, pear and peach. The can added notes of mango, orange blossom and pineapple. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste was almost as good as the nose. No hiding that 9.2 pct. Got bitter mango rind, passion fruit, Galaxy, trash, melon, watermelon, pineapple, white grapefruit, tropical fruit punch, peach and lingering peppery spice. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Dry, boozy finish. (Feel - 3.75)

Damn. Wanted this to be better. It was still outstanding for the style, but not quite as good as I hoped. (Overall - 4.00)

Look: hazy orange, thick 1 inch head
Smell: peach, grapefruit, very dank and ethanol
Taste: boozy, some lemon grass and tropical fruit but primarily boozy.
Feel: full mouth feel but than an ethanol sting

Overall was super excited for this and than let down... gonna sit on it and hope it mellows.

SO I wasn’t super excited about this one, haven’t had a bad beer from Weldwerks. I love juicy bits and alpha bits. The 18 blocks? Was probably one of my favorites, so I was pretty disappointed with this offering. Poured into a tulip glass, very hazy NE style. Off white 1 finger foam with real nice lacing. Smells grapefruit and something tropical. The taste isn’t there! I don’t know if I got a bad batch but it tastes like someone cut it with OJ. There is nothing there, I was expecting loud juicy double IPA, this tastes like a fizzy screwdriver. Oh well, don’t let this stop you from trying WeldWerks, it is probably my favorite brewery right now when I can get it. This was a little disappointing, meh!

had high hopes for this one. first time I had seen a Weldwerks NE IPA distributed outside of Greenley in a long time. big fan of their Juicy Bits brews, but this one was a disappointment. all the makings of a solid NE IPA, but the taste was off. too much of a bite in the middle and finishes with a strong lingering hoppy-ness that sticks around a while - not in a good way.
