Advanced Fluid DynamicsAdvanced Fluid Dynamics
Notes: Double India Pale Ale brewed with Sabro, Lotus + Citra Hops.

By now you're probably aware that we're pretty smitten with Advanced Fluid Dynamics. But never ones to be satisfied, we thought we'd take this series to the next level by completely re-tooling the base recipe and refreshing the branding while also upping the ante with new, fruited variations.

Since its debut, AFD has thrived off of contrasting yet complementary flavor profiles. Starting with the orange creamsicle and vanilla notes from the Lotus, we added Sabro to bring in some more tropical notes, specifically coconut, and Citra to the blend to bring in the familiar citrus flavors, specifically tangerine and grapefruit, which stands as somewhat of a grounding familiarity with the two even more contemporary varietals.

Hazy yellow...almost thick looking. A very small bit of white lacing. There is not a lot happening nose wise. Tangerine and vanilla? The tastes are coconut, mango, and something like vanilla taffy. There is a grassy finish and a creamy mouthfeel. There is a sweetness that tamps down any bitterness and that detracts from the overall rating of this beer.

Look - Pours a cloudy honey color with a 1.58 finger head; medium retention and a couple of shards
Smells - uneventful, "yeasty"
Taste - Holy shit Mother Teresa!!! Typical East Coast IPA - fresh, fruity, honey-summer related smell to a "carpenter bee full of a medium quality lemon- orange- grapefruit blossom organic pollen" in a nice way
Feel - only a Russian word can describe it - "терпкое"
Overall - a clear winner over Hoppy Stale West Coast IPA

Plus 8.8% ABV sneak up on you slowly. The beer definitely leaves up to its name "Advanced Fluid Dynamics" - nail in the head! Cudos to Whom Who named it.

Pours a hazy golden sunset color with fresh 1 finger head and lacing. Smell is tropical with citrus ,mint and grape. Taste was tropoical, dank and earthy , citrus and melon with mint cedar and passion fruit. Mouthfeel was more dry than sweet with prickly pine bitterness. Very nice DIPA.

Can. White head. Lace. Hazy dark golden orange.

Has an odd off flavor. Almost like onion or dill. Tropical and juicy after. Guava, orange, mango. Sort of bitter finish. Grassy. Earthy.

Not a fan of this one.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy honey color with a two finger head; excellent retention and a couple of shards

Smell: Tangerine and grapefruit are complemented by more delicate tropical aromatics - papaya, lychee and coconut

Taste: Delicate tropical tones forward with a creamy coconut aspect blending with the papaya and lychee; through the middle, the tangerine and grapefruit emerge and dominate, though the tropical elements linger into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; creamy

Overall: A bit too harsh of a contrast for my palate, with the tropical fruit being delicate and creamy while the citrus is pithy and bitter

"Double India Pale Ale" "Brewed with Sabro + Lotus hops." 8.8% ABV.

16 fl oz pull-tab can nabbed as part of a 4-pack from Total Wine & More, CO.

Served cold into a fancy beer glass I guess is technically an oversized snifter.

Coconut, vanilla, floral hops, tangerine, mango, creamy lactose-like sweetness (probably a cream flavour from the Sabro), pale malt sweetness, stonefruit.

I don't love its hop profile, but it's well balanced in terms of sweetness vs bitterness and hop burn vs hop flavour. I do expect more hop pungency and intensity of hop flavour in a beer billed as an IIPA, but this has a well disguised ABV true to the style and fans of more tropically oriented minimal bitterness focused expressions of the style will probably find it more favorable.

Yellow in color and extremely hazy. There’s a fingernail of dishwater white on top. The aroma is of citrus and tangerine. I’m tasting a lot of citrus and orange. The mouth is smooth and creamy.
