3.8 Miles opens with bright notes of ripe mango, fresh lemon zest, juicy pineapple, and candied apricot, followed by a subtle resiny dankness to balance. For this follow up to 38 Blocks, we kept the base beer mostly the same, but started with a brand new hop bill consisting of nearly 8 lbs of Mosaic, El Dorado and Lemondrop hops per barrel. The slightly higher attenuation allows the soft, creamy mouthfeel to hold up to the incredibly bold hop character without finishing too sweet. Despite the assertive hop character, 3.8 Miles maintains excellent drinkability as a result of the lower bitterness achieved from adding all the hops in the whirlpool and dry hop.

Canned on 9/10/19

Pours an opaque golden orange body topped with a finger of fluffy white head; solid retention fades to a tentative cap, light collar of froth, and a lasting soapy splatter of lacing around the glass.

Aroma highlights mango skins and ripe papaya upfront as light, creamy sweetness makes an intermittent appearance throughout the bouquet; dank lemon, raspberry, guava, and weedy tones bring some intense, exotic depth to the back end.

Taste brings out mango, guava, and peach skins from an almost overwhelming hoppy opening; earthy/grassy, brilliantly well-attenuated tropical sweetness along the mid-palate fade into boozy herbal hops coming through toward the finish.

Mouthfeel shows an ultra-creamy medium body with light-medium carbonation setting a balanced, silky tone apkng the palate; drying a bit over time until a growing twinge of juiciness progresses into a minor booziness accentuating the finish.

Burly, expressively tropical NEIPA unfortunately inviting a bit too much booziness into the fold to round out what is an otherwise excellent all-around presentation, and a highly smooth 8.7% to boot.

This is solid but honestly after having some Outer Range IPA's I feel like this is more Mehh than I would have originally thought. A drinkable double.

Picked up way too much beer on a recent work trip to the Boulder area. Basically searched for Knotted Root, Outer Range, New Image, WeldWerks and Cerebral, among others, only finding the latter two at the one place I was at. Gave a taster of this back on Oct. 4, 2019 at 4.00 with Nick at WeldWerks and then a 4.00 again when I got back to the hotel on Nov. 27, writing, “Still outstanding. Can’t believe no Motueka. Full review another time. Watching RATM from Woodstock ’99. I was there.” Going off Beer Advocate, this beer was, “3.8 Miles opens with bright notes of ripe mango, fresh lemon zest, juicy pineapple, and candied apricot, followed by a subtle resiny dankness to balance. For this follow up to 38 Blocks, we kept the base beer mostly the same, but started with a brand new hop bill consisting of nearly 8 lbs of Mosaic, El Dorado and Lemondrop hops per barrel. Poured a medium yellow hazy color with two fingers of frothy white head. Only a few noticeable bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass. Almost perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled Lemondrop, Lemonhead candy, herbal, menthol, mixed viney berry, El Dorado, Jolly Rancher lemon candy, pine needle, mango peel and light Mosaic. Much of the same from the can, maybe not as much Lemondrop. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted a little better than the nose. Still got big Lemondrop, Lemonhead candy, herbal, menthol, lemon Jolly Rancher candy, El Dorado, pine needle, tangerine, dish soap, lingering peppery spice, mango peel, viney mixed berry, floral and light Mosaic. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Man, I figured out two things here. 1) I really like Lemondrop hops. 2) Lemondrop pairs nicely with El Dorado. Was back and forth on a few categories, but overall this was excellent to me. (Overall - 4.25)

CAN: 16 fl oz pull-tab canned 10/13/20. Black and orange label.

Served cold into into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

"Double India Pale Ale." DDH with Mosaic, El Dorado, Lemondrop hops.

APPEARANCE: Murky yellow-orange body. Off-white head. Looks okay for a turbid IPA. The lack of filtration doesn't do it any favors.

AROMA: Aroma is slightly yogurty and tangy. Doesn't showcase Mosaic well, particularly its subtle blueberry flourish. Floral. Citrusy tang. Fruit juice. Citrus pulp. Hints of what I think the kids have been calling "hop burn." I'd refer to it more as rind or a harsher fruity detritus. Suggests an unfiltered IPA with minimal bitterness and an underwhelming hop profile. Aromatic intensity is moderate.

TASTE: Fruit juice. Pulp. Vague floral hop flavour. Not getting any tropical fruit or blueberry from the Mosaic, which is a shame. Not piney, resinous, or oily. Not very lemony or melon-y, so I can't say it showcases lemondrop hops well either. The El Dorado seems dominant...I don't love this hop profile, which presents as vaguely citrusy without a real focus or direction.

Not particularly well balanced nor well built, failing fundamentally to showcase its hop varietals in an interesting or effective way.

TEXTURE: Pulpy, thick, and textured. Well-carbonated. Smooth, wet. Medium-bodied.

Not oily, sticky, astringent, harsh, rough, scratchy, or heavy. Unrefreshing. Could be softer and/or creamier to better effect.

This texture doesn't elevate the beer's flavours or accentuate specific notes, but it's not bad by any stretch.

OVERALL: A drinkable IIPA with the hop pungency of an IPA at most. If its ABV is indeed 8.7% as listed on this site, its ABV is well disguised, but I can't say it's a top tier attempt at an IIPA and frankly it doesn't measure up to Weldwerks' usual level of quality. Hardly worth its high price and I'd sooner drink Lagunitas' Sucks, but it's fine for what it is.

Can. Hazy golden sunset orange. White head with lace.

Tropical and citrusy. Grapefruit, melon, honeydew, cantaloupe, papaya. Soft, but has some hops showing. Green and floral, but juicy. Pretty solid.

Pours a bright orange color. Completely opaque. Thick three finger bubbly white head dissipates pretty quickly and steadily leaving just a thin layer of sudsy white foam on top of the beer. There is a mild sweetness to the nose.

Aroma has notes of lemon, lemon rind, peach, mango, and apricot. Light grassy alfalfa notes come through on the back end providing a mild bitterness coupled with some rind-y bitterness. The sweetness from the nose just really doesn't come through in the flavor profile.

Feel is immediately noticeable for a really aggressive carbonation. It really tingles and leaves a residual tingling sensation in the mouth. Otherwise its got a medium mouthfeel, rather dry finish.

Overall its a solid NE style IPA.

Hazy orangey yellow with a tight white head. Smells of lemon, mango, and apricot first and foremost, then dry grassy hops, peach and subtle berries. Taste is much the same, juicy and sweet nectar up front, drying out for the finish with decent bitterness, get some grapefruit too. Also feels bright and vibrant through out but thinner

16oz can served in a nonic glass. Can dating is 05/20/20.

Look- Hazy golden orange color. Solid off-white head that recedes very slowly to a nice cap of foam, excellent lacing. Faint carbonation streams visible.

Smell- Citrus (tangerine, grapefruit and lemon), tropical fruit (pineapple and mango), stone fruit (peach and apricot), a bit of berries, grainy malt and herbal/floral notes.

Taste- Similar to the aroma, juicy citrus and tropical fruit, nectarine/apricot, bready malt and light hop notes.

Feel- Medium bodied, slightly sticky sweet and soft. Medium/light carbonation on the tongue.

O- This is a very solid DIPA, really easy drinking for 8.7%.

Canned 11 days ago.

Standard hazy orange appearance with nice lacing.

The nose is pineapple, orange, and strawberry with balancing floral and soapy notes.

The taste is similar. Light for the ABV. Peach, pineapple, lemon, and minor bitterness. Hints of strawberry.

The mouthfeel is medium. Light carb, light dryness. Clean and easy.

Overall, thumbs up!
