Starry NocheStarry Noche
Notes: Crafted to celebrate our 5th Anniversary, Starry Noche started as a carefully selected blend of Medianoche batches aged for 18-22 months in freshly emptied 7-12 year-old bourbon barrels. After nearly two years in barrels, the blend was conditioned on more than 3 lbs/gallon of toasted coconut flakes and raw coconut chips, then finished with toasted hazelnut.

A shameless explosion of blended barrels and adjuncts that stole my heart, incredible. Black oil appearance with a short lived brown cap. Smell bursts forth with hazelnut, coconut, vanilla, dark chocolate, backed with complex barrel flavors. For the taste I must once again admit I am a hazelnut fan, so this was paradise for me, huge rich hazelnut and chocolate dance amongst the oak and bourbon soak coconut, vanilla, faint dark roast coffee, caramel, and nutella. Feel is thick, chewy, warm, has a hint of nuttiness but way more so rich, full and decadent with the weight. I loved starriest night so it makes sense why I adored this, beer of the year entry only 21 days in!

Batch one was probably a little better than two, but they were both phenomenal. Feel, smell, flavor and barrel are all top notch. Hazelnut lover’s dream

B1 and B2 side by side.
Rated for b1.
B2 would be roughly 4.5 overall. Still very good but lacking in taste and complexity.
B1 is possibly the best pastry stout I’ve ever had.

b2 poured from a 500mL bottle into a taster sized snifter. pours a motor oil consistency black with coconut speckles and zero head. utterly sweet and decadent aromas of chocolate, hazelnut and coconut. the hazelnut is quite prominent. barrel is not quite there until it warms. taste is, again, hazelnut forward with a nice chocolate backdrop along with a subtle coconut sweetness and even slighter barrel sting. mouthfeel is stupid thick. like almost hershey’s syrup thick. melted down nutella with coconut. i was not able to try b1 for various reasons but i can see where all the hype comes from. that said, 3-5oz is plenty. cannot even fathom consuming a whole 16.9oz of this. it’s decadence on top of decadence. good, but it better not be the future of BA imperial stouts or we’re all in big trouble!

Pours inedibly black and tar-like. The crazy amount of coconut robs this beer of any head, but the oily residue swirls around like the paint strokes of Starry Night. Maybe that’s the origin of the name?

The aroma absolutely erupts from the glass. You smell it from literally feet away. Massive hazelnut aromas, rich chocolate, Ferrero Rocher, and thick-cut, oily coconut in the background. Hardly getting any barrel, and shockingly, no alcohol burn.

Wow, that is a dramatic amount of flavor. This beer is definitely one of the richest I’ve ever had, but it still manages to tame the sweetness. As it warms, the sweetness level does increase, but not to an unpleasant level. Mouth coating, sticky candy-like coconut and chocolate. Hazelnut and coconut blend in a really unique way, and they are both very strong. Hazelnut tends to dominate the flavor of beers, and the coconut hold its own here. Wish I was getting a strong barrel presence here, but the additives just take over. But wow.. pretty wild stuff.

Never having batch 1, I can’t say how this one compares, but I don’t think this is Godfather 2, but if it stood alone, it would be a very special beer, indeed. Perfect for celebrating Stout Day 3 days early.

2021 release

Appearance: highly viscous and syrupy, it basically drizzled out the bottle. Pitch black with absolutely no head or carbonation.

Smell: overwhelming hazelnuts at the nose with some coconut. Heavy bittersweet chocolate. Not really any bourbon.

Taste: again overwhelming loads of hazelnuts. It gives Ferrero Rocher chocolates a run for its money. It’s so rich and concentrated. Bittersweet chocolate comes through very nicely. A lot of nice heat throughout but not really any distinct bourbon flavor.

Mouthfeel: so heavy and thick, it clings to the glass like syrup and coats the mouth.

Overall: if the hazelnuts were any heavier or the beer was any thicker, I would find this beer un-drinkable. It’s super concentrated and dense, like it needs water to reconstitute it. I never had b1 of Starry Noche, but from what I’ve read, that batch was much better. I take their word for it. Still good nonetheless but eight oz pour was more than enough.
