Coconut Coffee Medianoche starts with a carefully selected blend of Medianoche batches aged for 18-21 months in 7-14 year bourbon barrels. After barrel-aging, the beer was conditioned on more than 3 lbs per gallon of toasted coconut flakes and raw coconut chips, then finished with over 150 lbs of medium roast Peruvian coffee from our friends at Mostra Coffee. Mostra sourced a special lot of Peru Finca Matapalo coffee specially for this project, which was honey processed and distinguished as a 2019 Cup of Excellence entry. Lending notes of milk chocolate and almond, the coffee perfectly complements the rich sweetness imparted by the raw and toasted coconut, all underscored by the complex notes of vanilla, toffee and baker’s chocolate contributed by the barrels.

Bomber at share. Slick black pour, flat. Roasty chocolate, sweet, syrupy, light coffee. Taste is sweet, thick, boozy, coconut present but not dominant.

Had on draft at Mikerphone.

L - Dark black with a little floating coconut that's noticeable.
S - Coconut and then some more coconut
T - Love the flavor, you'll always have me with sweet coconut! I really didn't get any coffee. Some nice woody-ness from the barrel.
F - Actually have to bring this down in this aspect for being too thick. The texture is distracting.
O - A tasty beer that could use more coffee if that's what it's going for but more importantly would be a lot more enjoyable if its consistency wasn't that of hot fudge.

27 June 2021 - Beer #243

Price: $43.00 on Tavour

Appearance: 3 - completely black, but no head, and gross floaties. Eww.

Nose: 4 - interesting. Almost all coffee. Slight coconut and barrel undertones.

Taste: 5 - oh my. An absolute explosion of flavor. Still mostly coffee, but plenty of coconut and barrel. This is going to linger until breakfast.

Mouth: 5 - as thick a beer as I've ever had. Nearly solid.

Overall: 5 - a decadent treat. Man I wish I had more of these variants.

Cheers!

Poured inky jet black, that glugs into the glass like pouring out a can of paint. No head developed, likely due to the extreme amount of coconut and extended barrel-aging. The layer of floating coconut pieces may look unappetizing, but it’s a foreshadow to the deliciousness that’s to come.

You can smell the beer from feet away. Big spicy, green pepper coffee aromas dominate the nose. A bit of dried chili pepper spice, coconut candy and fudgy dark chocolate.

God damn, it’s a nuclear bomb of coffee and coconut. Spicy, smoky coffee, coconut fudge, bitter dark chocolate finish. It’s an enormous beer, but the balance prevents it from getting too sweet. Even though the ABV isn’t listed, I’d say it’s around 13%, but man, you can drink this for hours.

Mouthfeel is super rich, and mouth coating. Despite the lack of head when poured, it has the perfect level of carbonation. Super smooth, but the dryness at the end conjures up some hot booziness.

Weldwerks has put out some banger beers, but this is the best I’ve had from them. Their careful, restrained use of additives has created exceptional balance. After how much I enjoyed this, their more sough-after beers must be off the charts.

Exceptional! Dark black body. Oily sheen, little coconut floaties. Smells like roasted coffee, almost burnt. But its coconut flavortown, almost Starry Noche level coconut. Sweet, but coffee adds balance and not so burnt on taste. Full bodied, thicc!
