Old Rip Medianoche features some of the most sought-after casks we have ever procured for our barrel program - Old Rip Van Winkle. After resting our flagship barrel-aged imperial stout, Medianoche, for nearly 18 months in freshly-emptied ORVW 10-year bourbon barrels, the resulting blend expresses notes of honey-soaked pecans, freshly split Madagascar vanilla beans, crème pâtissière and dark chocolate cinnamon butter, with just a hint of dried sweet cherries.

ABV ranges from 12-14%

Dark, thick erl in the glass. The faintest whisp of carbonation as it sits, but could use more.

Wish it tasted like it smells - sweet char on oak with a heft of spirit underneath

Taste is not as complex as I’d hoped. It’s all there, but out of balance. Should not have chilled at all as things settled into nice balance once totally warm.

Feel is too syrupy. Needs a little more carb to lighten up a smidge.

Overall a little disappointing. Good, but not worth the price/hype

On tap at Windsor Home Brew in Costa Mesa, CA.

Is it too cold to rate? At least, appropriately? I mean, being naughty is kind of fun, right? Is Candice Swanepoel before morning coffee ready for a Polaroid? I think so. And with that, I’ll rate ORM now! Oily like a teenager’s face under prom lights, and sweet and silky like the only kid in high school that listened to Primal Scream…under prom lights… I don’t know, and I’m pretty sure that I never did. And with that, let’s go!

Thick, viscous, and delicious. Coats the glass. Lots of wine, raisin and fruit flavors. Port like notes. Perfect, light carbonation. Heavy mouth feel. Split three ways with a small piece of chocolate cake. Really enjoyable.

Pours very inky thick almost hot fudge looking, jet black, no head, inky stains on the glass

Nose plenty of roast, roasted malt, roasted coffee, not burnt or acrid though, faint smoky note, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel and nougat candy, some charred marshmallow, hint of anise and baking spices, smooth rich vanilla oak barrel, hint of bourbon

Taste thick lush chewy like, velvety cocoa and creamy thick chocolate milk, melted dark chocolate, a bit of nougat and more charred marshmallow with the baking spices typical of dark roasted malts, speaking of, fair roast, roasted malt, a bit of coffee that increases as it warms, not acrid though, rich creamy vanilla, vanilla ice cream with hot fudge, a bit of bourbon but not a lot, touch of bitterness, hint of smooth alcohol, faint fruity chocolate covered cherry, semi sweet stick finish with a bit more warming alcohol, vanilla oak barrel

Mouth is full bod, rich thick velvety, low carb, fair warming slight tingly alcohol, coats the mouth for a while after

Overall the stout itself was really nice, super thick luscious and velvety, nice chocolate and roast without being burnt or acrid, sweet flavors without being overly sweet, nice vanilla barrel notes but not a ton of bourbon, wish they left it longer in the barrels, but otherwise good

Drank from a 500 ml | 1 pt 0.9 fl oz bottle purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
Served in a tulip

The beer poured an insanely dense and oily looking pitch black. There was zero head and no lacing. As the liquid was swirled, a sticky yellow film coated the glass.

The nose was robust but slightly less intense than I anticipated. Boozy bourbon notes came through big time. Loads of rich maltiness as well. Roasted malts were most prominent. Good dose of caramel malt sweetness too. Vanilla was also detectable. There was a smoky quality initially that was reminiscent of peak smoked malt, but this came and went in waves. Later, some dark fruit notes emerged.

The flavor profile was very similar to the nose. Huge malt presence up front. Nice balance of sweet caramel malts and deep, dark, roasted malt notes. Loads of boozy bourbon too. This definitely tasted hotter than 12.5%. Dark fruits were also noticeable. Touch of vanilla in the center. More lingering roast and vanilla after the swallow.

The mouthfeel was insanely dense. Ultra rich and slick, like used motor oil. This was definitively one of the most viscous beers I have ever tried. The liquid contained a fine, subtle effervescence that gave the beer a creamy suppleness on the palate.

Medianoche - Old Rip was an impressive beer with an absolutely massive body, though I am not sure it was worth $40 for a 500 ml bottle. I am glad I had the opportunity to try this but might think twice about spending this much on any of the other beers in the Medianoche series.

Look: It pours very dark with no head.

Smell: The aromas are strong enough to smell from a couple of feet away. It features chocolate, cocoa, caramel, alcohol, and cinnamon. There are bourbon notes with vanilla.

Taste: It has chocolate, cocoa, and dark chocolate flavors with cinnamon and vanilla. There are some honey notes and nuts with bourbon. It also features some dark caramel flavors.

Feel: It is quite thick and chewy. The alcohol warming elements are quite smooth.

Overall, quite impressive array of flavors and aromas. For the amount of alcohol, the warming is about as smooth as it gets.

500ml bottle. No dating information found. Label lists the ABV% at 12.5%.
Black colored body from top to bottom. No head upon pouring, with just a very thin ring. No lacing.
Aroma is roasted malts, with bourbon barrel, chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, woody nuts, and cherry.
Taste is roasted malts, with bourbon barrel soaked nuts, chocolate, cinnamon, and cherry. Note of sweet vanilla. Even fade out in the aftertaste.
Thicker mouth feel. Some alcohol burn, especially at the back of the throat. Quiet carbonation.
Has some depth of flavors with bourbon barrel that soaks the chocolate cherry, and then some additional cinnamon and vanilla. A true sipper because of the ABV% and the body thickness.
