Definitely don't get to drink Cantillon as often as I would like and when I do, its usually a treat. This was no exception; a solid gueuze that was enjoyable from start to finish.

A 750ml bottle at Nüetnigenough. 2013 sticker, bottled on 27th April 2015. Poured into a Cantillon tasting glass.

Appearance: It poured a clear golden colour with a one finger white head that dissipated fairly quickly and left some sparse lacing.

Aroma: Apple, floral, lemon, hay, grass, barnyard with a touch of light funk.

Taste: Quite similar to the aromas with apple, lemon, grass, hay, floral, sour, light vinegar and funk.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with high to moderate carbonation.

Overall: A great gueuze. Loving the Lou Pepe varieties from Cantillon. A refreshing spritzy gueuze that is very easy to drink.

Having had all Armand'4 last week, plus various other 3F goodies, I was curious how i would feel about a 2010 LPG this week.

Looked beautiful clear and gold, poured with moderate carb and a bit of head. Smelled like tart Cantillon, rather sweet and a bit fruity. Taste followed suit. Delicious tartness, a bit more tart than apple cider. Perhaps some wine barrel. I didn't find it as bitter as the classic bio gueuze. Fairly sweet and the mouthfeel was incredible - had nice body and quite sufficient balancing tannins. But...very little depth or funk. Found the drinkability high, but the complexity lacking. Perhaps, as others have stated, it needed more time. I plan to never open a LPG this young again (I believe it was the 2013 bottling of the 2010 vintage, opened July 2016).

Pours a hazy golden color. Aroma is tart and funky. Flavor is smooth gueuze tartness with a smooth acidic finish. Tastes like it as a little fruit in it. Feel is excellent, very velvety. Overall delicious.

Honestly was a little bit letdown with this one. To be fair, I had it at a share that included four other Cantillons. It's still a very solid Gueuze, but the lesson learned is that Cantillon simply makes much better beers than this one.

2010 Sticker, poured into a taster. Medium bodied, perfect carbonation, funky, some oak and a bit of fruit. Sour but not puckering. Overall, a world class gueuze!

2011 sticker. Poured from a 750mL bottle into a Cantillon stemmed tulip glass. Acquired in a trade.

Pours a dark orange, pumpkin colored body with a big white head that reduces fairly quickly but leaves a nice layer or retention and some lacing.

Decanted and allowed to warm.. aromas of oak, funk, barnyard, hay, cedar, citrus, lactic.. aromas are potent and waft through the room, much more inviting than regular gueuze, definitely more wood character!

Taste is fantastic, upfront a light tartness with heavy oak, quite woody, citrus and tons of funk all mingled together, mustyness on the follow through, finishes dry and funky. So delicious. Medium-low carbonation, easy drinker, medium light body.

The increased wood and oak character of this really puts it ahead of regular gueuze and honestly all other gueuzes i've had in the past. Truly world-class.

So I'm going to blend the scores here. Aged LPG and fresh LPG are two different animals. This is comparison of a 2010 sticker vs. a 2007 sticker. Had the 2010 on 12/21/15 and then 2007 on 1/1/16.

2010 L: Looks like carbonated apple juice. Copper/amber hue with plenty of carb. 4.5.
2007 L: Looks like carbonated apple cider. Incredibly murky. 5.

2010 S: A bit more mild than I expected. Close to regular gueuze but a bit more unique. Some apple, mild vinegar. That cleaner Cantillon funk, but a little dirtyness. 4.5
2007 S: Wow, that is mouthwatering. Granny Smith apples, plenty of dirty funk, but more lemony and lactic forward. 5.

2010 T: Same as the nose. Mild apple, vinegar, slightly soapy fresh Cantillon funk with a bit of dirt. 4.25.
2007 T: Same as the nose! Very apple cider like, tons of lactic mouth watering pucker, lemon, nice funk but a bit behind the lemon apple qualities. 4.75.

2010: F: Fine, a bit thin like fresh Cantillon gueuze usually is. 4.25.
2007 F: Awesome. Creamy and thick, little bit lower carb but so mouthwatering. More like a 4.9.

2010 O: Great gueuze, but not a big enough step up from the regular to justify the price. 4.25.
2007 O: One of my favorite bottles of gueuze ever. The extra few years of aging really made a huge difference. Or maybe it was just better back then, who knows. Worth the hype here. 5.

So yeah, if you go for a bottle of LPG, plan on aging it for at least 5 years, or grab a bottle that's already at least 5 years old. This one was about 6 years when we opened it. It makes a huge difference.

2013 vintage drank out of a chalice on 3/19/2016

Funky and tart, but not overly tart at all. Very refreshing and tons of crisp apple and grape flavors. Well balanced with some grassiness and nice oak as well.

75cl bottle. Golden orange with a short-lasting white head. Smells like vinegar, macerated grapes, barnyard funk. Sour taste all the way, with interesting notes of mould, barnyard funk, apple vinegar and grape juice. Good stuff - probably the best gueuze I ever tried.

Pours an almost brown color, with a slight head. Smells a bit funky and citric. There is an intense early tart flavor to this, but it mellows out very nicely. Not overly tart at all. Lots of wood barrel in there also. Some slight carbonation rounds this beer out beautifully. So glad to have tried it.

Enjoyed out of a classic green glass 750 mL bottle with a 2011 sticker on the neck area. Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack tulip glass.

Appearance (4.5) - Fairly classic look, with a brassy golden, mostly translucent liquid with just a bit of haze on the first pour, and a bit more on the second (sorry, no lambic baskets lying around...). The body is capped by a two and a half fingers of creamy, slightly slick looking foam that is barely off-white. A few larger, sudsy-looking bubbles, but mostly composed of tight microbubbles. Retention is better than I expected, but still doesn't last long, , leaving just a few soapy wisps of lace on the glass after it recedes and some intermittent swaths of film on the surface of the liquid.

Smell (4.25) - Many of the elements of Cantillon's taste profile, but all more muted, or rather, mellowed than a gueuze containing younger lambic. Notes of oak and wet hay as well as an almost sugary sweetness that I don't recall from other Cantillon offerings. Some acidity that brings the impression of preserved lemon and there are also hints of ripe stone fruit as well. Lastly, an undercurrent of soft oak brings everything together. It's very integrated as an aroma--nothing individually jumps out, instead creating a cohesive aroma that really comes forward all at once.

Taste (4.25) - Very similar to the aroma, there is a mellowed overall characteristic to this beer that is quite unique--at least with my experience--to the style. There is a slight tartness, but it is rounded and softer containing that natural sweetness that I picked up in the aroma. I personally wish there was a bit more acidity, as there is not really any puckering factor here, but there is still some nice, musty, oaky funk characteristics and some softer fruit overtones like peach and nectarine. Really, I could see this being a great gateway "sour", as it imparts the core characteristics without melting your face off.

Mouthfeel (4.5) - A nice, light body, but with the impression of some fullness imparted by the creamy carbonation that is on the light side of moderate, not prickly or sharp at all. Some minor viscosity as well and a semi-dry finish on the tongue. All in all makes for a very easy-drinking gueuze (which seems like an oxymoron).

Overall (4.25), a delicious beer, but I have to admit I expected a bit more. I'm not even sure I would put this in my top five Cantillon beers. Perhaps it's that I prefer my gueuze to include some younger lambic for the brightness it provides, as if given a choice, I would choose the classic gueuze over this one 9 times out of 10.

A: straw to golden yellow. Very mild haze. Champagne bubbles. Thin white head

S: funk. Sugar candies. Lacto. Floral citrus.

T: sour. Duh. Some oak. Lots of barrel. Some pickle juice

F: clean crisp and a bit creamy

O: quite good. My first Cantillon and Maybe a bit underwhelmed with the expectations. Still lovely

2010 sticker bottle (2013 cork) Head to head vs. 2011 bottling 3F Golden blend. The Lou Pepe had surprisingly low carbonation relative to the GB. No head, but some moderate carbonation. But the LPG tastes sublime. Beautifully balanced and complex. Best Gueuze taste I've ever had. Enjoyment all the way to the end of the bottle. GB was great too and had slightly better mouthfeel, but slightly less drinkable than the LPG

This beer is basically everything you could ask for in a gueuze, complete with the signature Cantillon flavor profile.

Overall, a very good beer, though not worth what it takes to acquire a bottle via retail or trade.

S: Fig. Sour notes.
T: Intense sourness. A little balsamic. Moderate bitterness. Dry.
M: Light bodied.
O: Quite sour for me, but is not too harsh.

Cantillon Lou Pepe Gueuze (2010 sticker, 2013 cork). Beer review #2000. A momentous occasion and some real reflecting going on right now. Started reviewing at the ripe age of 21; 2270 days ago. What a journey it has been. I must thank my good friends and family who have gifted me some amazing beers along the way. No particular reason I picked this for #2000, it was just the bottle out of my stash that seemed up to the task.

A- Uncorked with a pool of slimy beer atop the cork and a decent pop upon opening. A fruit fly floats atop the medium golden body after the one finger puffy head dies down to a medium ring. Spotty lacing here and there as it just doesn't seem to wanna stick.

S- Musty and funky and probably somewhere in the middle of the Cantillon catalog for me as far as those qualities go. Lactic acid funky fermentation tones, musty old grapes, wet medium oak, apples, horsey barnyard straw, dried Italian meats, pungent cheese and a general wine feel throughout. Classic Cantillon bugs.

T- Much like the nose and in Cantillon vein it is a smorgasbord of funk, spontaneous microbe fermentation and old brewing tradition. Obviously a beer but fermentation feel of wine, yogurt and cheese to leave their mark on the palate. As my old reviews were here is a huge list of things I get, all of which seem to balance out very well: lemony lactic acid, a small touch of old wine that has soured into vinegar, old wet oak wood, tart apple, pale wine grapes, funky horse pasture, dirty farm basement, pungent cheese, Brett cherry pie and an herbal, floral spice perhaps from the younger yeasty part of the blend.

MF- Foamy, medium-light bodied overall feel on the palate with some creaminess and frothy textures. Carbonation is quite high still even after the cork appeared to rot into pieces in the bottle. Moderate overall sourness by Cantillon standards.

Here's to 2000 more reviews and the mystery to what #4000 will be. It feels very appropriate to have a Cantillon for this occasion and this one really is a great one. The old-world brewing tradition and how they have had a (non-self-induced) mystique about them since I have gotten into craft beer. Wondrously funky yet smooth and balanced and easy to drink. Perhaps this journey has just begun.

Had this at a beer tasting, with the amazingly good fortune of being presented with a 1999 bottling. That's right, aged for 16 years almost perfectly for Stiffler's mom.

Besides the bottle itself being beautiful, the hazy golden brilliance of this beer was just amazing to take in. Big tart aroma on the nose with just a bit of a funky yeast quality. That may have faded over time, I've never had a recent bottling of Lou Pepe to know how it compares.

Flavors are tart citrus fruit and green apple, almost a cider like quality. Not mouth puckering, but at the same time a perfect amount of astringency that other gueuzes I've had are not able to replicate.

I so want to procure other bottles of Cantillon's amazing sour beers. It is a challenge to find American made lambic style beers that stand up to this. An amazing drinking experience.

lively carbonation, slick oily feel, ....
nice tart lemon, cider, burnt caramel, and funk....
flavors are balanced and nuanced, and not in your face, but definitely a tasty brew

Best Before 2033

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, looser looking, foamy white head with decent retention. Clear gamboge orange in color with medium levels of carbonation for the style. Head fades to a thin wisp and ring. Slight ring remains but leaves no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Sour lemon, funky barnyard notes and some citrus aromas on the nose. Much brighter than the musty and dank regular gueuze.

TASTE: Puckeringly sour lemon, citrus and some slightly acidic notes up front, moving into a bold and lingering finish of more lemon and sour citrus fruits, hay, some barnyard funk and acidity as well. Bright and flavorful with plenty of citrus and sourness for sure.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes dry and puckering. Very dry finish.

OVERALL: Good stuff all around. Found this to be much fruitier and slightly acidic compared to the dank and musty regular gueuze, which is a big plus in my book. Something I could easily polish off over an evening and one I hope to enjoy again in the near future.

Huge thanks to Thirtybird for this one. 2010 vintage served in a Hill Farmstead taster. Pours a golden-orange hue with a frothy, bright white head that dissipates into a sudsy slick. Clarity is semi-hazy. Nose is musty and expresses citrus zest and cork. The taste on this beer is very good, but not mind-blowing given the ratings. I get cork, citrus rind and citric acid; however, nothing really stands out. Mouthfeel is light in body with a lively carbonation and a pleasant astringency. Overall, a solid gueuze but not my favorite Cantillon. Perhaps a little more time in the cellar was needed?

Vintage 2009. Drank in 2014

Appearance: pours a light orange to yellow color. a finger or more of a white and bubbly head with moderate retention and leaving behind a weak lacing. a strong haze and completely opaque.

Smell: Funk, vinegar. lemon, some grassy to mustiness.

Taste: opens up with some wheat-like malts along with some grassiness, and some mineral water. becomes much funky towards the back. full of vinegar and some lemon acidity.

Mouthfeel: strong carbonation, some sticky and earthy stuff left behind. light and not overly sour.

Overall: a solid geuze no doubt. the taste is very nice but its fairly mellow. I think it could really use a bit more sour strength or funkiness. I'd be interested in tasting a few vintages together to really get a feel for this one.

Appearance - Hazy orange body. Nice white head. Thick collar and some nice surface wisps.

Smell - Lots of citrus. Lemony. Very spritzy. Some dry grass and a bit of a metallic aroma.

Taste - Much more dynamic. The citrus is lemony and orangey. Pale malt is stronger. Very woody. Dried grass. Woody finish.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation. Moderate sourness. Medium light body.

Overall - My white whale. An excellent Gueuze. I think I'd take a 3F over it, but it's remarkable.

2010 Bottle.

A: Very light straw. Extremely good clarity. Fine bubble head retreats to a rim. Moderate effervescence.

S: Big sour on front and gets more sour as it opens. Notes of vinegar, light malts, straw, neutral oak, and sour yeast.

T: Once again, strong sour on the front. Notes of straw, tobacco, lemons, dust, ripe pears, and neutral oak. Strong sour yeast.

M: Very smooth, but a bit puckering. High carbonation and light body.

O: This is a big-time sour, sour. Not for the faint (non sour) hearted. This is worth the price/hassle/patience - really. Lots of stuff going on with the bacteria and wild Belgium yeast makes this top-shelf. I did get a strong vinegar smell and taste, but that comes with the territory.
