A-Hazy, bright yellow. Beautiful color.

S-Fresh fruity tart.

T-Dry and the sourest tart I have ever experienced.

M-Light bodied, crisp and smooth.

O-I need to say that Lambic's aren't my thing. This is the first Cantillon i've had the pleasure of trying and i'm clearly still developing a taste for sours. That being said this was terrific, the sour/tartness created such a crisp and pleasureful beer that was great to drink. I will definitely seek out more!

Cork Dated 2001:
Extremely astringent, superbly sour, very sharp with hints of bitterness. A truly Classic Gueuze, often regarded by many as a benchmark example of its style. A beer style that does polarize drinkers. You will Love it & want more - or Hate it, & spit it out. Apart from the Gueuze-Vigneronne (also Cantillon), it would be my chosen desert island beer. Jean-Pierre Van Roy of Cantillon tries very hard to create authentic lambic beers, & he has excelled himself in my opinion with the Gueuze. Beer can be lively (hence the reference to Gueuze as the Champagne of the Beer world) - do not stand over the cork when pulling, have your glass ready - you have been warned! Improves with age. Try and find older examples with the blue and white Mannekin Piss pictured on the labels, as opposed to the colored brew-kettle on recent years bottles. Can I give this 6 out of 5?!

750ml – Old Style Black Label – Cork Dated 1996.
A brilliant murky fluid, which has an orange cloudy hue. Served in a dry flute glass with minimal carbonation, white, but very tight thin bubble head. It resembles a flat Hefeweizen after a short time.

Has all the nasal beauty of a herd of damp unsheared Sheep, you know the ones that have shit stuck to their matted back ends. Liquid farmyard effluent traces, wet straw, hay-lofts, rotten soaking oak casks, old wooden barns & crap stained muck-spreaders.

Incredibly dry, impressive yeast dominant astringency, with a massive acidity that fights every drop of saliva in the aural cavity. It decimates the mouth & creates an arid wasteland. The sourness has lessened over the years. Dehydrated cheeks are powerless to defeat the “you-know-what-is-coming-next” aspect. The Cantillon mouth-pucker. I am sure I swallowed my own mouth at least twice.

Drinkability – More Please…….

Geeeeee-zuss – DON’T drink this if your lips are chapped!

A WORLD CLASSIC that just gets better (worse?!?) as it gets older.

Kudos to EyeChartBrew for supplying this dirty whore of a lambic.

I have been scouring through my backlog, including some (mostly) bottles in my Beerfrigerator, an all-reefer with no freezer space. I had filled it at my parents' place, kind of ignored it, emptied it for the move to Chez Woody & then refilled it upon arrival. This one is going to be amazing! I pulled the cork & it is dated 1996.

From the bottle: "Brewers of Belgium's Most Authentic Lambic"; "Spontaneously Fermented Bottle Conditioned Methode Champenoise"; "Aged and Blended Lambic Beer"; "The world's classic Gueuze. A blend of one, two, and three year-old creates a second fermentation in the bottle. The champagne of Belgium."; "Store and serve at cellar temperature (50-55 F/10-13 C). Do not serve cold! Pour gently (leaving behind the yeast sediment) into a wine glass or traditional Belgian tumbler."

I had to both Pop! the cap & pull the cork until it likewise Pop!ped. Pop! Pop! I then began a very gentle pour into my awaiting glass until I saw the lees begin to move on the distended punt at which time I backed off. Color was a gorgeous Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, enticing a visit from The Gelt Gang of Mammon, Croesus & Midas, all wanting a taste until ... The nose hit us all. Man, when they talk about a "barnyard funkiness", this is the phrase's poster child! Cheesy, sour, sweaty, funky, wow! I remember being off-put the first time that I tried Gueuze for this very reason, but now, I have come to embrace it. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not terribly beyond it, either. That said, it was mighty carbonated, creating a pleasant effervescence in the mouth and on the tongue. The extensive aging had mellowed it from distinctly sour to a tickle in the hinges of my jaw, but the tartness was still as puckering as ever. The taste was musty and cheesy with a pronounced lemony sourness. I let it just kind of roll around in my mouth to allow the taste & smell to permeate my sinuses so as to create a pleasant memory. Finish was super dry, puckeringly tart & just what I expected from this gem. What a find in my cellar!

2017 vintage enjoyed in the first days of 2019
Slightly hazy pale yellow with a very thin head.
Some funk on the nose but quite clear compared to other gueuzes.
The taste is sour with mostly lactic notes and no acetic notes. Funky bretts, the raw wheat is very present and quite smooth.
Quite dry and with a champagne-like carbonation.
A unique Gueuze. Refined compared to other examples.
Had it a lot of times after that both on tap and in bottle. What strikes me the most is the balance of the beer. Have it fresh you've got a perfectly refreshing drink. Have it a room temperature and you've got a wonderfully complex offering.

As advertised, this blended lambic proves to be as flavorful, complex, and refreshing as any beer can be.

Lemons, limes, and must fill the nose in a very tanic and vinous fashion. Sourness, tartness, and old woods are definately on the menu. The zing of dry white wines, sour grapes, and crab apples come to mind and nearly give me an astringent reaction just from the aroma.

A murky light golden pour releases a juicy burst of carbonation (champagne-like) early that is short lived, quickly settling into a light effervesence that releases a thin and stubborn sheet of white foam. With good retention and light lacing this gueuze shows better beery attributes than most.

The intense tartness of lemons, limes, and white grapes provide the first wave of flavors while softer malt breadiness and mild sweetness offers a quick repreive from the full brunt of the possible astringency. Salty flavors come in just before the musty wood and sweatly flavors take hold. Quite savory and crisp in the mid palate. The tartness then quickly fades into a hoppy bitter flavor that brings in the dry and crisp finish. The beer just keeps comming, wave after wave of flavor.

Likewise, the mouthfeel goes through a similar procession- a wash of acidity comes first, while a malty creaminess and structure follows, all just before a dryness and mild astringency give the final impressions of texture.

A very well balanced and complex sour ale that twarts the notion of one-dimensionality or simplicity. Characterful and as unoffensive as true sours can be.

2015 vintage. Poured from 750 mL capped and corked bottle into tulip.
A: Pours a clear golden yellow with moderate carbonation producing a 2 inch fizzy white head with decent retention.
S: Lovely...sweet funk, tart, earthy barnyard, dry minerals, peppery spice, and a subtle sweetness.
T: Wow! Subtle citrus sweetness, barnyard funk, oak tannins, vanilla, tart and sour (lemon, cherry?), white pepper, and dry minerals. With warming, an almond note emerges that is quite nice. I'm sure I'm missing some of the elements...very complex which likely comes from the blending of one, two, and three year old lambic.
M: All sorts of sour, tart, sweet, funk, and dry. Nice lingering and maturing on the palate too. Light body. Moderately effervescent.
D: Phenomenal for style. Hands down, best gueuze I've had. Refreshing and deeply complex at the same time which is a very difficult feat. Simply a tremendous brew!

Appearance – This one is bright, light orange in color with some good, visible carbonation. The color was crystal clear; almost radiant. The head was modest and fully white.

Smell – This was still cold when I opened it. The nose started off with a light sourness that developed into some beautiful horse blanket. This is your classic horsey aroma. A second assessment of the nose after an hour or so showed a bit stronger sourness and the presence of a good, healthy malt base that was kind of yeasty.

Taste – The light, freshly-squeezed lemonade was very even. This Gueze is not overly sour like other efforts I’ve tasted. The light, unsweetened pink grapefruit and hints of cherries rightly complimented the other flavors that I picked up at the nose. Everything here is so natural. I almost missed the light, natural sweetness until Skyhand pointed it out to me.

Mouthfeel – This light-bodied Gueze is very dry without a hint of bitterness. The delicate, active carbonation was right on. This one is perfectly blended. The balanced mouthfeel was the key to my enjoyment of this Cantillon.

Drinkability – How can you go wrong? This is not an over-the-top example of this Belgium style. It is incredibly well-blended and balanced. It is the perfect mating of light sourness, intense but pleasing dryness, and wonderful carbonation.

Comments – I popped this 2001 to celebrate my 1,000th review on the site, and it surely made the occasion a memorable one.

Reviewing Notes: I could have copied and pasted the style description right out of the BJCP on-line style guide to write this review. Word for word this bottle represents the ideal of a Belgian Gueze.

@ Armsby Abbey

What a treat to stumble upon Zwanze Day leftovers on our vacation through New England.

Served in a little Cantillon glass, the pour is a clearish yellow with a skimpy head that results in some minor lacing. The smell is a juicy, sour melange of hay, melon, grape, green apple, and lemon. Sour, funky flavor, slightly acetic, but not over the top. Lemons, limes, puckering apple, and some oak wood tannins. Dry, tart, and crisp. Just an excellent gueuze that I could have kept drinking for the remainder of the night if money were no object.

Glass poured from bottle at brewery.

A-Golden color with a few CO2 bubbles rising to surface a little bit of white foam on edges of glass.

S-Earthy wild yeasts dominate-funky.

T-Sour with a fairly long finish with a smooth end that keeps you needing to drink more.

M-First sip is definitely puckering and wakes you up. Otherwise is smooth and not overpowered with a carbonation bite.

D-A whole bottle of this 1 might give me a sour stomach.

O-The standard for which all other gueuzes are measured. A beer that must be drank with a clean slate and an open mind. A unique and interesting beer for sure.

12.7 oz bottle poured into a Unibroue tulip. Cellar and serve at 50-55 degrees F. Cork says, "Bottled in 2.008"

A - The Classic Gueuze pours a lightly hazy golden yellow with a low, slightly off-white head. Low retention is discouraging but a little bit of lace is left over. Very effervescent.

S - While the aroma isn't entirely sour, it is very acidic. Lots of wet wood and a massive funk to it. The smell an be both incredible and disgusting. It's something to behold.

T - The flavor is an intense blast of very acidic and sour funkiness. A bit of horse blanket melds well with the wet wood. The aftertaste isn't as strong as I expected but leaves a very funky lingering acidity in the back of the throat.

M - The carbonation level is almost sparkling like champagne followed quickly by a strong acid bite and sour finish. Medium-bodied.

D - I'm going to cork the rest of the bottle to share with a friend in a bit. It's funky and good, but one glass will do. Unlike any other beer out there.

A-golden in color fizzy head that fades but leaves some lacing

S-straight funk. real sour. like super sour apple cider

T-not as sour as the nose but still really sour. again, super sour apple juice. delicious

M-dry and light and quite carbonated

D-although light, the taste is pretty funky and while I enjoyed this brew very much I don't think I could drink more than two in one sitting. Still, I love it.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. A pale straw yellow concoction full of fizzy effervescence, including a meringue-like off-white head that disappears quite quickly, leaving a fine lacing on the glass. Aroma is decidedly tart and funky, apple cider and/or rice vinegar with a subtle brown sugar undercurrent. Wonderful. Tons of acetic/tannic fruit but with a subtle sweetness as well. This gueuze wins on aroma alone but fortunately delivers a top-tier experience on the palate as well. Champagne or wine wine-like, with a moderate amount of horse blanket (not overpowering in this regard) and essentially dominated by sour fruit and tannic flavors ... Lemon, unripe pear, cranberry, white grape, green pineapple. Carbonation remains in the background, such that the sour flavors can really pop, and finishes very dry and almost woody with ample lemon and tart green apple skin. If I can say anything negative at all, its that I was looking for something in addition to the tartness ... Perhaps I was looking in the wrong place. Classic gueuze.

Deep straw yellow color with a modest semi foamy white head that goes away quickly. Definate barnyard funk on the nose with gravel, wood, and weedy earthy tones. Really sharp bitter sour tarty taste that lingers and continues to develop on the back of the tongue throughout. Pleasantly effervescent carbonation and soft mouth feel. Mellows as it warms. Fabulous classic Gueuze, top of its category.

12ozer from Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA. Excellent shelf presentation, with black foil, crown, AND cork. Cork notes that this is a Brasserie Cantillon, Bruxelles product, bottle in 2002. Never had gueuze before, I trust this will be interesting...

Poured into a Rapscallion snifter, for lack of the correct glassware. Very effervescent, lots of tiny bubbles form in the pouring process. They all gather together to form a thick white head when all's said and done and the bottle's empty. The fluffy head slowly collapses on itself as time passes, leaving little to no lace. Bubbly, sharp aroma, not unlike that of champagne. Orangish yellow in color, cloudy but easily transmits light through and through. Taste is defined by tartness, which is initally overpowering, due to my not knowing exactly what to expect. After a few sips, it seems to settle down a bit, with the flavor rounding out with some apple and citrus tones and even a slight oaken aftertaste. A complex and pleasing brew, which after all isn't that surprising, considering the Shelton Brothers don't import just any old beer.

Bottle with the man in tipping chair silhouette, courtesy of Gibby32 (Thanks Mike!). Bottled in 2008. Light pop of the cork, pours a pale orange golden color with no head or lacing. Carbonation looks light. Nice funk in the nose, brett-tastic, notes of lemon rind, wet hay, and lightly acidic. Taste is right on with the nose. Mild cheesy funk in the front, followed by a crisp, acidic citrus flavor, mildly tart and sour, keeping this nice and drinkable. Funk really starts to come out with warmth and the sour and tartness begins to take a back seat. Gueuze's are supposed to be a more acidic lambic, but I've had much more sour lambics than this. Could use a little more carbonation in my opinion, as it's nearly flat giving it a very light body and slightly less than refreshing. Not bad, but I still think Gueuze's are not my favorite styles.
