Another bottle from the Reno Sour Bottle Share @ St. James Infirmary, jmoore50 thanks a bunch, this is one of if not my favorite gueuze.

Pours a rough day of partying urine orange, small white head to it. Plenty of carbonation. Like champagne, this uses little bubbles. Much like the classic gueueze, a tart, tight and minerally funk permeates the nose. Mixture of pear and apple. Of course, there's lemon. Huge salivating sour factor.

Despite the funkiness in the nose, and the sour on the tongue, this really has a refreshing edge to it. Light hopping. Shares some of the apricot it seems from fou fune. Throw in a little hay and grassy notes, and you have a complex but clean and enjoyable gueuze that is balanced throughout from the first sip.

750ml bottle, 2010 vintage. Pours a golden orange color with a thin white head. Intense aroma of lemon, peach, grass, and funky barnyard. Flavors of lemon, lactic acid, subtle hops, and herbs. Fairly light body and carbonation with a long dry finish. Very delicious and refreshing.

2010 Vintage. Poured from a 750 mL corked and capped bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: My pour has a cloudy tangerine orange color with a delicate white froth. The head only remains for a minute before fading to a ring and a thin film, but it still leaves a few wisps of lace.

Smell: The aroma is full of barnyard funk, horse blanket, and leather. Slightly musty as well. There is some good tart acidity to the nose. Tons of Brett in this one.

Taste: The flavor is pleasantly sour, blended, and balanced. Some light grains prelude lemon zest and a little grapefruit sour flavor. Some straw and grassy notes draw out the flavor, and the finish has some musty earthiness.

Mouthfeel: This is acidic, with some lactic character. Fairly dry, medium bodied with delicate carbonation. A bit more dry at the finish.

Overall: This was one of the first gueuzes that I was able to really get into, and now I think I am an addict of the style.

First beer of the decade! The cork broke when I was trying to get it out, but luckily I got all of it out and none fell into the beer.

A - Pours a hazy golden yellow with about one finger of bubbly white head that fades fairly quick. Visually very effervescent.

S - Smells tart like muscat grapes. Some nice funk to it. Apples and a bit of pear.

T - A nice tartness like a granny smith apple up front that is very pleasing. Some nice barnyard funk here in the background. There is some grapefruit and lemons here as well. A hint of hop character noticed here as well. All in all very delicious.

M - Nice light body and extremely effervescent. Very small lively bubbles.

D - Light and refreshing, extremely delicious. Look forward to getting more into the world of lambics and guezes.

Cantillon Saint-Gilloise on-tap at Moeder Lambic, in Brussels.

Funny that one of the highest rated beers of one of the rarest styles from one of the world's most sought out breweries look quite simply just like pineapple juice. Though a little more golden in colour, it is so murky that I half expect to find pulp. Its head is big (while it lasts).

The aroma has a blend of tart and sweet that makes me dizzy with glee. Soured, overripe apricot and sweet marmalade preserves rise above the notorious 'barnyard' notes of the Lambic. Something 'funky' is sensed, but it doesn't result in a dance party... more like a family picnic.

Indeed, Saint-Gilloise is a bit more agreeable than other wild-fermented ales. Make no mistake - it has an acidity every bit as tot and a tartness every bit as fierce, but these qualities are neither blustery nor menacing; they merely enhance an already stimulating mouthfeel.

Flavours of sweet apricot and pineapple also help downgrade the acidity from 'thorny' to a more pleasant, palatable citrus-level. They also temper the tartness - just a bit - and are an innate partner with the orchard- and farm-like elements that include hay, apple, earth and grass.

I don't think I've smiled this much since getting a puppy as a child (come to think of it, a few of my happiest memories involve drinking Lambic under a clear blue Brussels sky). Cantillon Saint-Gilloise should have stuck with its maiden name (Cuvée des Champions) because it is, in my opinion, a perfect Gueuze and one of Cantillon's finest offerings.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip glass.

Look is a hazy golden amber with a think head that dissipates quickly into a thin white line.

Aromas are classic lambic. Lots of funky horse blanket, light citrus acidity.

Taste is dry and smooth with a funky acidity through the whole thing. Tart and tangy but not overwhelming.

Absolutely delicious.

Drops the party hearty orange on ya, but with 1/3" white head, so damn impressive. Super lemon tart funk and even some minor rubber burning aroma. Massive sour notes, 8 on a 1-10 scale.

Drops all kinds of brett and light skinned citrus fruits. Still light on its feet despite packing an intense amount of sour, fruit and oak. Mild grassy, earthy mouthfeel.

Gonna have to drink this and the classic gueuze back to back someday. Phenomenal stuff.

Served on a white wine glass

A: It pours a straw-like golden colors with a milky clarity.  There was a strong one finger white head that the bartender dumped to give me a full pour.  There is little to no lacing. 

S: The nose is quite floral with large elements of apples, white grapes, and peaches.  There is a lovely sour funk billowing from the glass like a barnyard gone awry.  It is incredibly well rounded and appetizing. 

T: I am greeted by the dry hops on the first sip. It is quite floral and herbal. White grapes and apple peel are not lost amidst the other flavors  The oak barrels also come through wrapped in a lovely sour bouquet. The sour notes predominate with the funky leather notes hanging in the background. The more it warms the more layers reveal themselves.

M: Moderate body with champagne-like carbonation. 

O: I feel like a lucky man today.  I would rank this as an exceptional gueuze. The hops really pushed it up a notch.

Poured into a tulip glass.

L: Pours a golden yellow color. There is a pretty big sudsy head that makes me think that this will be quite carbonated as many Cantillon beers are.

S: Huge green apple notes mixed with vanilla and oak come through immediately. I pick up a bit of the hops on the back end. I also get some vinegar, which is obviously expected. Actually, when I popped the cap off, the cap smelled of straight malted vinegar which made me cringe and think that I wasn't going to get anything that resembles a good tasting beer. Good thing that didn't happen.

T: The taste as expected follows the nose pretty well. Very nice green apple flavors come through and some vanilla oakiness are also present on the back end. There's a moderate level of sourness. I can also tell that this is dry hopped. There's a bit of pine that comes through as well.

F: This definitely has the feel of any other Cantillon that I've had. Easy to drink with a bit of tartness. It's definitely enjoyable and I'll have no problem polishing off the 750.

Overall: This is a really nice beer. The dry hopping adds a really nice touch to this. I don't like it quite as much as I did Iris, but it's still fantastic. Truly a great beer and I wish these Cantillon's were easier to get a hold of.

750ml Bottle. 2004 Vintage. Dark golden yellow with a nice head of tight white foam. Lacing is minimal, but pretty none-the-less. Aromas are all lactic lambic funkiness with a real juicy earthiness abounding in this particular vintage bottling. I get hints of horse blanket in the aromas as well as hints of very acidic fruits, musty juice, and more. Ya know, the normal stuff. The taste is exceptional but very subdued for a Cantillon. This is not nearly as sharp, acrid, or acidic as most of Cantillons other offerings. This is quite juciy in fact, and less dry than most other gueuzes available on the market today. There is also a distinctively bitter aftertaste, that must be from the use of dry hopping. Although this brew is still far from, what i'd call, hoppy. Mouthfeel is champagne like. Spritzy and grand, and the drinkability is absolutely awesome. Wow, what a quaffable, laid back gueuze from the masters of lambic. I need to try the Loerik next. For sure.

A truly epic brew. 2009 bottling shared with another BA at Monk's in Philly in June of 2010.

A: Hazy orange-golden body. Large off-white head after each pour into a cantillon lambic glass. Spotty clumps of lacing left on the glass.

S: Truly world class. Nice acidic sour lemons, wheat, straw/hay, barnyard funk, yeast, oak, musty funk, and a little orange. Layers upon layers of funky lambic goodness.

T: Honestly, this was a bit of a let down after the nose... but upon further reflection this was quite delicious. Sour lemons, some lactic tartness, straw, oak and barnyard funk. Not quite the same level of complexity and layered depth as the nose.

M: Medium bodied. Gentle carbonation. Lingering sourness with some tartness in the middle. Refreshing and invigorating.

D: Really enjoyable... kicking myself for not stocking up when I had the chance months ago... if you see this on the shelves buy two... one for you and BM me to trade the other!
