The name Vigneronne Cantillon was given in 1987. This name reminds us that, while it belongs to the beer patrimony, the spontaneous fermentation, the ageing in the barrels for several years and the addition of grapes make it a distant cousin of certain white wines.

In spite of its success, the Vigneronne represents less than 5% of the total production of the Cantillon brewery. In order to obtain grapes which are as mature as possible, we buy them at the end of the season. Every year, 1000 kilos of white italian grapes are delivered at the Cantillon brewery in the beginning of October.

i had the esteemed pleasure of having this on tap and in a bottle just one day apart, which is not only a rare treat, but something to almost feel guilty about, beer this sought after and all, but i am thankful and will remain that way. this beer, for carrying so much hype, isnt as distinct as i expected it to be, and in fact is an awful lot like the classic gueuze itself. i think the grapes are a little more vibrant in the on tap version, but the properties of both are quite similar honestly. the bottle pours hazy golden, still looking, but with a short white head. as per cantillon usual, there is as much funk as there is sour here, tons of musty oak in the nose, and i get the lambic part of it long before i get any fruit. the fruit is a little more dramatic in the flavor than the nose, and has a sweetness to it. more of a riesling thing to me than a muscat one, although i dont drink a ton of white wine, i get that vibe from it. the oak is nice on it, really robust and mellowing, and the sourness too is tempered by it. tart for sure, especially in the finish, mouth watering like crazy, but the fruit doesnt add as much to it as either of the berry beers they do, and certainly not as interesting as the elderflower mamouche i had earlier in the week. its hard when comparing so many world class sour beers, but for me, the fruit is lost a little in this one, not as radiant and memorable as others they make. i love the complexity and the ancient feel to this, how truly high quality it is is certainly obvious, but im not sure the grapes make it any more special than the lambic is in isolation. nice dry but mouth watering finish, good acidity, and maybe a touch undercarbed. overall outstanding beer, but not my favorite cantillon brew by any measure.

Hand carried a bottle back from the Brewery in '06, sampled '24. Closet stored.

Aroma: It's a lot. Very heavy nose, high volume vinegar, lemon juice, farm fresh Cantillon funk. No off notes.

Appearance: Deep gold glass, no head, not hazy, just dense looking.

Taste: Lemon juice out of one of those fake plastic lemons, super acidic. Second major note of vinegar, but mixed with some white wine and that Cantillon yeast character, farm animal, and hints of berries.

Mouthfeel: It burns, acid content is off the charts, puckers like lemon juice, dry, flat, somewhat hateful.

Overall: Glad to see the bottle stood up to the extended cellar time. The cork crumbled making a strain through a coffee filter required, but worth the effort. A classic profile and very rare find for Texas, a good way to welcome 2024.

Pours sa golden yellow, slight amount of haze, light ring of head and no lacing. Nose is funky with hits of barn, hay, wet earth, moss, fresh cut wood, along with some harsher, more metallic notes. Taste plays extremely sweet, very reminiscent of Chardonnay or Gewürztraminer to the point of being one-note and overwhelming. Finish is slightly fatty though overall rather light. Lacking in much depth and for fans of sweeter whites.

On tap at Armsby Abbey

Inadvertent Zwanze Day pour number 2. While I’m here I might as well try a few choice Lambics, right? Another long time want of mine, moving from a red grape Lambic to a white grape Lambic feels like a natural transition. Let’s get into it

Pours a cloudy orange gold with a finger of white head that fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing

Man, this is super funky in the nose. I’m picking up on aromas of wet hay, blue cheese, toasted oak, white wine vinegar, crabapple, brown zest, and wheat bread

Likewise in taste this has a huge funk to it. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting white wine vinegar, lemon juice, straw, old leather, grapefruit zest, crabapple, wet hay, and stone. The swallow brings notes of white wine vinegar, lemon juice, wheat bread, toasted oak, apple skin, light honey, and a touch of blue cheese

A light medium body pairs with moderate carbonation, resulting in a sharp beer. Finishes very dry with a tart funk

Unsurprisingly, another awesome Cantillon beer. Not my favorite, but still a pleasure to try

Slightly skunky 2019 bottling. Hazy straw in the glass with a small quickly dissipating white head. Aromas (beyond the skunk) are white grape, pear, hay, barnyard funk, and a hint of dried lemon. Flavors are moderately acidic with notes of white grape, wildflower honey, and oak barrel

Nov '15. Great balance of sour, funk and fruit. Initial pours soft golden with mild haze, last pour very hazy. Nose really brings the white grape and culture notes. Taste starts with sour and finishes with the grape.

Bottle, at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Incredibly intense farmhouse aroma combined with an equally intense sour fruitiness. Intensely sour gueuze flavour, lemony as hell. Funky and lemony aftertaste.
