With absolute masterful hands, only brewers, blenders of cantillon can create a dry, sour and flawless taste while keeping the identifiably, radiant character that keeps the fruit tasting like rhubarb. Grandma's rhubarb never tasted so good!

Cantillon Rhubarbe seduces the senses with its vibrant fruit perfume of rhubarb- caught somewhere between raspberry, strawberry and blackberry, and is also indicative in the beer's deep mauve hue and its light pink froth. Candy-sweet to taste, the initial flavors are of hard candy and a hint of pastry with a kiss of jammy maltiness.

But the sweetness is soon forgotten as the brisk carbonation and the pungency of sourness steals the show. Remaining just as radiant with rhubarb as ever, the taste calderns from below with citrusy lime, crabapple and the spicy tang of gooseberry. Currant, red grape and an overall musty wine taste round out the fruit and introduces a light briny taste. Weathered oak, cellar-like woodsy nuttiness and a hint of cedar swirls about the senses as the finish looms.

Medium-light, crisp and clean despite its robust fruit flavor, the sour ale strips the thirst from the palate and ushers in an utmost refreshing taste. Lightly peppery, red wine-like a tannin-balanced with wood, a soft afterglow of rhubarb and pastry remain in a brief echo.

Slightly hazy pastel yellow-gold with a soft, creamy white head that persists throughout as a thick clingy collar.

Really funky but light stinky cheese aromas are followed by overripe peach, and a little sawdust or crushed almond.

I do not get a lot of rhubarb in taste, more like a lemon-raspberry tart, which I guess in itself is pretty close to straight rhubarb, but we have rhubarb that grows all around the house so it's not a flavor I'm unfamiliar with when ultra fresh. I also get some barnyard funk, and as it warms, some fresh rhubarb faintly emerges. Luckily I had some rhubarb jam nearby to tease out the rhubarb flavor, but it is not like a mouth puckering crunch of that green-pinkish stalk, it's just a slight twinge running along the background.

Medium body with a soft, frothy feel.

I had this on draft at a Cantillon tasting for Cleveland beer week in Oct 2016, and it was simply listed as "Rhubarb (Draft)--a blend of 2 year old lambics brewed with rhubarb." I believe it is actually Zwanze 2012 as there does not appear to be a Cantillon beer simply named "Rhubarb," but we did not receive clarification from the bar that held the event.

Slightly hazy peach color with pearl white head. Aroma is really fruity and sour with lots of farmhouse funk. Taste is sour but not puckering, really fruity and fresh, not too acidic. Really interesting fruit profile, another great lambic from Cantillon.

Note: I do not know what rhubarb smells or tastes like.

As Zwanze 2012 version. A 750ml bottle at the brewery. Poured into a Cantillon tasting glass.

Appearance: It poured a hazy golden orange colour with a half finger white head that dissipated fairly quickly and left almost no lacing.

Aroma: Tart, funky and oak with a touch of leather and some fruitiness (which I will assume is rhubarb).

Taste: Sour, tart and funky. Some hay, lemon, grapefruit and a tart fruitiness (which again I will assume is rhubarb).

Mouthfeel: Dry-ish, light bodied with low to moderate carbonation.

Overall: Another nice beer from Cantillon and my first Zwanze. I do kind of wish I tried actual rhubarb first before trying this beer so that I had at least an idea of how close or how strong the rhubarb came through. But in any case, this was still very good.
