Style: Foreign / Export Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The dark caramel, large dense headed brew, with its 8.8% alcoholic content, is unique due to its sweet notes of chocolate and coffee interspersed into a foundation of dark roasted barley. Symbolic black to denote leadership, power, focus and strength, is dominant in the labeling as the lion journeys in the twilight unafraid, unbowed and unchallenged.

pitch black, thick head that stays around. nose; could easily be mistaken for a dark-fruited dubbel - plum, licorice, toasted grain and booze. taste; roasted malts, mocha, light licorice and chocolate - the booze present on the nose does not show up here surprisingly. very much like most of the cold-toddy'd stouts, lion is very light on the bitterness and delivers the chocolate and mocha payloads quite softly. medium carbonation and mouthfeel. the 8.8% abv is extremely well tucked away, making for an easy drinker. i'm just not a big fan of the rum/cola and licorice notes here, which come out doubly on the aftertaste.

Picked this beer up from the local craft beer shop. Was looking to try a new stout, so I popped this, and drank it out of a Guinness glass.

A - Dark, Stouty, Cold-Brew
S - Coffee, Carribbean stout smell like Guiness Foreign Extra
T - Coffee, Mocha, Light Spices on Back
M - Smooth
O - Very nice stout. I approve

8 bucks in Brooklyn, NY for a 625 ml bottle. Would be curious what you guys have been paying out there.

Happy drinkin'!

Look: Opaque and nearly ebony, with a khaki head almost as thick as its body. A filmy veil sticks to the sides of the glass.

Smell: A rich mix of fermented dark red fruit reminds me of a young Merlot, but this brighter scent soon settles into one of sugared prunes and mocha.

Taste: A good balance of sweet and tart: dark chocolate, plums, and molasses mix with cherry cordial and rhubarb pie. Black licorice and a smoky aftertaste present an interesting edginess, but this beer is like a marriage in that the exciting first impressions ultimately become mundane as the flavors come into balance. In the end, the rhubarb is muddled with chocolate, and the scale tips a bit more towards the sweet side.

Mouthfeel: Quite creamy upfront, and it only gets thicker in the finish. The dark malt brings a bit of dryness, but for the most part, the swallow is smooth. Moderate carbonation is appropriate for both the style and the recipe.

Overall: A very good Stout that veers on the rink of becoming great before settling back into its comfort zone and then some. Initially eclectic, but later blasé, although the bit of spice tartness, and smoke, combined with an excellent frothy mouthfeel maintain the urge to keep sipping.

Bomber poured into a tulip.

A- Abundant froth khaki head, plentiful and scattered lacing. Pitch-black body. 4.5

S- A bit pungent and floral with a sweet malt quality like a Malta Goya soda. 3.75

T- Molasses sweetness and hints of dark chocolate move to touches of soy sauce and brown sugar. It's sweeter in flavor. 3.5

M- Potent floral feels meet a medium-bodied malt feel. Sweetness shows. 3.5

The malt flavor is more sweet and molasses-like than roast-y and coffee or chocolate like and I think I prefer the latter in a stout. I find this awfully close to a Negra Modelo or some other darker beer of that ilk.

Tried this beer on a night out with my wife. Poured a nice dark black with a tan head a few inches, tasted exactly how I feel a good stout should and am definitely going to try to find some for home.

Picked up a 625 ml bottle at my local Trig's grocer. I can't decipher the bottling code, but this was a pretty recent arrival with a pretty high ABV; so I'm not too concerned about the freshness. Poured at cellar temperature into my Samuel Smith pint glass.

L: Pours a rich coffee black with a dense khaki head of about three inches that sticks around for a good long while and leaves substantial web-like lacing on the glass.

S: Very nice nose on this one: toffee, coffee, dark chocolate, and a more subtle black licorice are all present in the bouquet. Just a bit of nuttiness and some clear alcohol poking through.

T: Caramel, toasty, and roasted malts are at the front--this one is pretty sweet. The middle has a building creaminess, which also sees the sweet increase a bit, along with the coffee and dark chocolate notes. There's a bit of the black licorice coming through in the middle, along with some toffee notes. I fear that this review is giving the impression of a very sweet stout, but the sweet never gets out of hand. In fact, the middle and back have more of a savory quality to them. The back end sees more of the caramel and roasted malt flavor, as well as just a hint of clear alcohol that's accompanied by just a bit more of the black licorice flavor. The aftertaste has just a bit of bitter.

F: Full-bodied and very creamy without feeling syrupy. The carbonation feels spot-on. Nice feel on this one.

O: This is a very tasty and very drinkable stout, especially given it's relatively high ABV. I was reluctant to try this--knowing nothing of this brewery--but this one is a big pleasant surprise. I highly recommend.

Really nice export stout. Big dark fruit presence, some dark chocolate, and some mystery... beer from Sri Lanka? Nice balance and just enough bitterness to cut into the sweet notes. Really nice beer, and a nice surprise.
