Style: Foreign / Export Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The dark caramel, large dense headed brew, with its 8.8% alcoholic content, is unique due to its sweet notes of chocolate and coffee interspersed into a foundation of dark roasted barley. Symbolic black to denote leadership, power, focus and strength, is dominant in the labeling as the lion journeys in the twilight unafraid, unbowed and unchallenged.

Served in a snifter glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Thin brownish black body with a light tan head rising maybe a notch over a finger's length. Head drops quick after one sip, lacing is a bit uneven.

Smell: Light warm sugar, and descent hit of malts.

Taste: Sweet cream and sugar. Molasses and
Touch of malts. A part of me likes it part of me wants to leave it alone, a little spicy but light...like touch of cinnamon in the stout.

Mouth: Sticky but dry brew, after taste is complex. Almost like raisins at the end.

Overall: Good brew, hybrid brew between and American stout and imperial stout. The lightly spicy note is what attracts me to the brew. Definitely a must grab if you see it. Salud!

From bottle, pours dark brown to black colour with a finger of tan coloured head that disapates to a thin layer.
Aroma roasty, creamy, chocolate, coffee, sweet.
Taste pretty much follows the nose beautiful.

From the bottle, it pours a infinitely dark brown with a light brown fluffy head. Lacing. Alcohol and caramel in the nose. The mouth gets roasted barley and coffee. Yum!

The Lion Stout was better than expected. It poured an opaque black with white head that left a spotty lace. The scent had hints of vanilla. The taste was malty with hints of vanilla. The Mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's worth a try.

Dark, dark brown with a caramel head that's almost the color of the label trim. Classic stout nose of roasted barley and hops with some sweeter elements suggested. Taste: a balanced stout with caramel, dark malt, some hops and some alcohol tingle... very nice. Might be a little sweet for some but for me it is an excellent balance. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy but not cloying. Classic.

Poured from a dark brown bottle into a nonic. And enjoyed!

I have bought 6 packs several times over the last decade and this rich, complex stout has showed me something new almost as many times.
It was the first strong stout I could swallow. Smooth. Not harsh or bitter like its competitors.
Then later, I started to learn about the interplay of different malts and how they could control bitterness.
Then recently, I started eating it with Indian food and it became one of the mysteries of the universe that something that smooth could calm food that spicy.

Reviewed in Roger Protz' CAMRA classic "300 Beers To Try Before You Die!"
MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave it 3 of 4 stars and called it "fruity, peppery and tar-like."
Listed in the "1001", the reviewer tells the story of how "The Beer Hunter" found Lion Stout in a Sri Lanka mountain resort.

You want an adventure?
Try this stout with Indian food. You will not view the same way the Conventional Wisdom that lagers go with Indian food.
