Style: Foreign / Export Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The dark caramel, large dense headed brew, with its 8.8% alcoholic content, is unique due to its sweet notes of chocolate and coffee interspersed into a foundation of dark roasted barley. Symbolic black to denote leadership, power, focus and strength, is dominant in the labeling as the lion journeys in the twilight unafraid, unbowed and unchallenged.

I have bought 6 packs several times over the last decade and this rich, complex stout has showed me something new almost as many times.
It was the first strong stout I could swallow. Smooth. Not harsh or bitter like its competitors.
Then later, I started to learn about the interplay of different malts and how they could control bitterness.
Then recently, I started eating it with Indian food and it became one of the mysteries of the universe that something that smooth could calm food that spicy.

Reviewed in Roger Protz' CAMRA classic "300 Beers To Try Before You Die!"
MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave it 3 of 4 stars and called it "fruity, peppery and tar-like."
Listed in the "1001", the reviewer tells the story of how "The Beer Hunter" found Lion Stout in a Sri Lanka mountain resort.

You want an adventure?
Try this stout with Indian food. You will not view the same way the Conventional Wisdom that lagers go with Indian food.

Black in the middle brown on the outside, 1/5" tan head. Aroma was lots of roast, but I didn't really pick up any coffee or chocolate notes from the malting.

A little sweeter than expected, still thick, sturdy and roasty. A little bit of that brown sugar. Its hefty alcohol comes through. Its relatively cheap and a far better alternative than the other world wide distributed stout out there. The cans of this are where its at.

nice looking beer! served in a tall pilsner glass (?) with minimal head. Smells nice with nice roasty malts and coffee dominating the nose. tastes like a classic export stout with coffee, some cocoa and some nice roasty flavors coming through. Mouthfeel is where this lacks, incredibly thin . really throws off the chill of this beer.
overall a nice export stout that i would drink again on tap, but i'm happy i didnt spend the money on a bottle

Large can served in a Belgian snifter after some time for warming.

Pours thick and essentially black with a moderate size, semi-durable tan head. The glass gets coated with lacing each time its tipped but the lacing doesn't stick to the glass/ .

The aroma is relatively strong and fruity, with some alcohol esters and a hint of coffee.

The flavor is moderately strong and surprisingly sweet. Mainly dark roasted malts with no char or burnt grain notes. Subtle hints of coffee and dark fruits.

Smooth, medium-full body with appropriate carbonation.

Overall: I drank this beer somewhat frequently when it first came to the US. It was a bargain at the time and, of course, quite good. Now it tastes sweeter than I remember and not quite as good but plenty good enough to recommend. Well hidden alcohol.

A: dark brown with ruby accents; 1+ finger medium tan head that receded to a thin cap; very nice, thick, lacing;

S: sweet with a rum-like quality; a little alcohol; a little roasted grain;

T: follows the nose - sweet with a rum-like quality; a hint of roasted grains way in the background; almost no bitterness;

M: light to medium bodied; light to moderate creamy carbonation;

O: too sweet for my taste; body was quite light;

Aroma is sweet and chocolaty, body black and oily. More chocolate in the taste, with very mild coffee bitterness. Sweet and slick, goes down easily. Some very mild lingering bittersweet flavor. Worthy of its reputation.

This was my every friday beer when I was in Sri Lanka before 2006. Great blak stout and only stout in Sri Lanka. This finishes with a long roasted caramel, sweet chocolate and then creamy flavour. They only produced 700ml bottles back then, alcohol % is so high in this one, I only needed one bottle before start feeling heaven. Ceylon brew produces a great larger beer as well, which is a so drinkable everyday beer. And they had a beer called Stone which was again a high alcohol product and was a quite bitter and hoppy flavor whic I believe a light pale ale type but they dont produce this any more. Overall lion stout is a great beer
