A finely topped by white froth finger of foam, and quite cloudy gold colored, thickish loolking brew. Not a poster child, but hey it's hefe laden beer we are talking about.

Not the usual aroma, in a good way, clove is joined by other spice and some nice sweet tangy yeast flavor, and some hops in there too I do believe adding wonderful bitter backing to a scent that has elements of sourdough to it.

Not the usual hefe taste either, missing notably is the banana. Clove now has coriander and pepper to buddy up with in a sip that is just sweet grainy enough, just rounded yeasty enough, just herbal bitter enough. Palate gets accustomed quickly to a joyous flavor that is raw and delicious.

Very low carb., maybe a touch under for style, but to this palate it makes a beer that is carried stunningly well. Quite full bodied and viscous also, but refreshing, and finishes clean and drier than usual for style.

Excellent beer, I may have passed without trying for years, but today it beckoned convincingly from store fridge. Glad I got it, highly recommended.

500mL bottle into a hefe glass

A: Pours a hazy pale straw color with 1 fingers width of white head. Head dissipates down at a moderate rate, but leaves zero lacing.

S: Lots of clove and banana esters, wheat, fruity, awesome aroma.

T: The first flavors I get are citrus and wheat. Clove and banana are present but less so than in the aroma. A bit of spice.

M/D: Fuller body, carbonation on the heavier end which is appropriate, drinkability is average.

O: A far above average hefe. One of the standards of the style. Definitely worth a try, even if you arent a huge fan of the style.

The best hefe out there IMO. Beautiful in every way. Slightly more yellow than most hefes, and this is what I look for in Belgian witbiers as well. If you see it, buy it. It's like making out with a mutant angel born without teeth. Also excellent out of the bottle. I wish it came in 6 packs in my area. $3something a 500ml persuades me to buy $8.99 Weihenstephaner 6 packs instead.

On tap the beer stein last night.

The beer pours a somewhat cloudy, white flecked golden amber color, with good head retention and considerable lacing. The nose is textbook German hefe, as I pick up considerable clove, light honey and mandarin orange, banana, and some underlying spice. On the palate, it's all just more of the same, with the beer finishing with a dry wash of clove and spice. Mouthfeel is fairly light, though there's plenty of flavor in this well crafted beer. Alcohol is pretty much unnoticeable, and drinkability is excellent.

Really nice beer from Ayinger.
