Ayinger Ur-WeisseAyinger Ur-Weisse
Notes: “The union of wheaty freshness and dark malt often produces a fullness of taste and complexity”, explains the world-famous English beer commentator Michael Jackson.

This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

Appearance:
egg white head, nice full cloudy formation. Retention is almost acceptable. very hazy, brown/apricot color. Can't see through the haze. Looks like apple cider. No lacing.

Nose:
crackers, bannana, red apple, yeasty.

Taste:
wow, great mouthfeel. Soft on the palate with a twinkle of carbonation at the end. Again, bannana up front which subsides to some apple cider. Not malty or hoppy, just thick fruit. It finishes very well. It gets thin and watery just at the end which is nice to your taste buds.

Notes:
Overall, I am very pleased with this beer. It has nice head/nose/taste, not overly expensive, and not too hard to find. A great introduction to dunkel:)

L : Sun tea and apple cider colored with a very tall head of 4 fingers, soapy and sudsy. Lace is left sparsely in broken hills on the sides.

S : Dark wheat meets cinnamon sprinkled bananas, mandarin orange, and bazooka bubble gum in the nose. Lingering notes of lightly charred barley, citrus, pink grapefruit, dark bread crust.

T : Light, fruity, delicious with a hint of darkness. Flavor similar to the nose. First thing I notice is the literal crushed vitamins and minerals that glide past my tongue adding texture, with strong notes of banana, banana peel, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cherry or berries, orange peel, and clove. A knock-out flavor profile while remaining crisp, sweet, and easy.

F : Textured with minerals, vitamins, and unfiltered wheat. Makes it drink like pulp OJ. Incredible. Beyond that it's very crisp, smooth, and light.

O : Will I buy this again? Abso-freaking-lutely. This is one awesome Dunkel, not to be missed by any beer lover. Classy work, here.

Poured into a German glass that says "Dunkel" on it - thought it apppropriate...
Poured cloudy orange with a thin, but steady and well-retained head.
The smell was a bit on the thin side - but, what was there was clean and inviting - banana/clove and citrus - more orange than lemon.
The taste was light and refreshing. Malty - no hop presence - fitting for style. The banana/clove and citrus held up throughout, though the citrus, esp. orange, though some lemon as well, took over a bit, especially in the mouthfeel. It left a bit of a tang - not a bad thing though. Overall, very clean feeling was left. It was about as complex as this style gets - a good beer all around - will certainly keep it in my summer beer cycle. Another good brew from an outstanding brewery!

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass
A: Pours a hazy golden color with a full three-finger head that settles quite slowly
S: Clove & banana with hints of bubblegum and wheat
T: This matches the nose perfectly- clove & bananas up front with lesser notes of bananas and wheat to round it out.
M: Medium-bodied with a nice zest though a short-ish finish.
O: I tried this tonight along with Ayinger's Brau-Weisse. Both were similar and both very good, though the Helles style of the Brau (vs the Ur's Dunkel) showed a bit better.

Sold in a bottle of about 16 oz, this hefe weizen poured with a foamy head of eggshell white. The head dissapated quickly and left no lacing. It was a cider-colored brew with only the slightest haziness.

The smell was rich and heavenly, very fruity. There was the expected aroma of cloves, a little banana, and some old smokiness and cidery aroma notes. The taste was a little sour, fruity, with a good tangy flavor. Very little bitterness and whisky flavor notes in the finish. Ever so slight graininess, and some warming alcohol to the mouthfeel. Good carbonation. Light to medium mouthfeel. This is a great brew to sip and savor. Excellent drinkability because of its complex and authentic flavor. Get some, you won't be disappointed.

This style is my favorite and for me, Ayinger Ur-weisse is the standard which all other dunkelweizen beers are compared to. The caramel rich, fruity aroma and taste is refreshing, precisely balanced and always delicious. Recently at a Total Wine Belgian Beer Class a participant commented that this beer as his favorite "Belgian Beer". The young instructor of the class immediately corrected him "that is a Bavarian Beer, but is is excellent". A pity that more American craft beers do not attempt to imitate Bavarian beers like Ayinger. My only wish is that Ayinger keg beer would be available in the US.

Could've fooled me, this dunkel tasted like a normal hefe. Light, airy head that dissipates slightly towards the end. Strong banana characteristics that I like. I paid the usual, 2.59 at hollingshead. I really wish there was a way I could get these German hefes a little cheaper.

Pours a hazy brownish orange color. Big head on the pour with great frothy retention and thick lines of lacing.

Aroma of smooth wheat, yeast and floral hops.

Big wheat flavor on the bready end and quite smooth. Solid citric hop with spicy ginger notes. Yeast and clove character rounds it out. Excellent balance.

Very smooth feel and well carbonated. Medium body with lingering yeast texture.

Really good dunkel. Lots of flavor and complexity. A treat to consume.

Reviewed 8/10/2007 (bottle):

Pours a dark brown yellow color body that is very cloudy and effervescent. Big white foamy head. Aroma is very effervescent, citrusy, and lemony with some wheat. Not a very strong taste. Wheaty, citrusy, effervescent. Watery. A nice light beer.

Cloudy with thickly packed fine yeast, and two finger head of close knitted white sorta define the look for this style, just about perfect.

The aroma is biscuit dough and light clove, banana, bubble gum, and some herbal things going on behind it all. As it warms the aroma gets even sweeter, and fruitiness appears,

What a taste! Man, it is more fruity in the mouth, tasting of pear with banana, with some nice spiciness to accompany that isn't sharp at all, and the doughy nature cleanly holding it together. It is sweet, but cleanly so, with alcohol totally hidden in the spice of this. Just a fantastically enjoyable balance of delicious flavor here.

Low carb, medium viscosity, excellent finish, super tasty and clean linger.

What a great beer. Highly recommended.
