Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“The union of wheaty freshness and dark malt often produces a fullness of taste and complexity”, explains the world-famous English beer commentator Michael Jackson.

This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

This brew is a dark, murky brownish, translucent colored liquid. This head is fizzy and medium-lived. Amazing aroma: banana, a little clove, malt, wheat, and a perfume-like scents. The taste is semi dry, clean, and flavorful. Full in body and extremely enjoyable.

Poured a very cloudy dark amber with a 3 finger frothy off-white head. Light lacing. Nose is musty, grassy, and unripe bananas. Taste of malt, banana, mellon and mild clove. Moderate thick feel with moderate light carbonation. Overall, this is good but I prefer hefe.

L....cloudy...not dark like I expected. Orangish amber. Nice head.. good lacing.
S.... distinctly bananas..cloves
T.... right away the zing jumped out.. wasn't expecting that...not sour or anything like that....tartness...apple and maybe lemon notes on top or right with the banana.
F... carbonation not excessive but high.. not the smoothest hefe. Not a bad taste... still pretty pleasant.
Overall... something tells me there is something different...not subtle but still not your run of the mill here. Actually there may be something missing here or maybe added. I can't put my tongue on it. Sure I would drink it again.

Tasted on tap at Ayingers in Munich.

Dirty amber color with plenty of cloudiness. Moderate and lasting head. Only a few spots on the glass.

Strong wheat aroma with a bit of yeast and lightly toasted malt. Not very "dark" to the nose. A touch of banana.

The flavor draws out more banana than the smell. The yeast is also stronger. The malt is toasty but not "too dark". It's also sweet. The aftertaste is relatively short.

Poured from 500ml bottle into weizen glass. No bottling or freshness date.

L: Cloudy light amber brown. Excellent fluffy two finger khaki head with outstanding retention.

S: Banana, clove, apples. Gentle aroma.

T: Lots of fruit, apple and banana, clove. Soft flavors but very tasty.

F: Medium body, crisp, semi-dry.

O: I have come to believe Ayinger doesn't make a bad beer. This is very very good.

(500 ml bottle, poured into an over-sized wine glass)

L: hazy, medium-amber liquid with a lovely, thick, sudsy, inch-high blanket of soft foam... even with the little bit of dregs later poured in, it doesn't get much cloudier... the foam didn't hold long, but a thick collar remains... lace slides down glass

S: quite potent fruity esters - banana, plum - and a hint of spice... soft essence of earthy yeast slurry... I can't stop whiffin' this in real deep... just fantastic, and the shape of the glass seems to be key... potency dies off after awhile

T: surprisingly light and clean, bready malt more in finish and aftertaste - but the fruit flavors are on fire here!... I'm wondering if a fresher bottle would have more malt sweetness - but nonetheless the grain is dense, if not full... thinly acidic aftertaste with some plum essence... the taste overall could be a 4.5, undecided

F: again, I think I was anticipating more body - there's a bit of a foamy front, the bottom drops out and the liquid flows back clean and refreshing, with perhaps a delicately chewy viscosity on the follow-through (which is likely the lil yeast slug)

O: no idea how old this bottle was - maybe up to if not more than 6 months?? - but the quality was still very much intact... definitely will get again and I must compare with my other dunkel faves
