Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“The union of wheaty freshness and dark malt often produces a fullness of taste and complexity”, explains the world-famous English beer commentator Michael Jackson.

This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

Poured out of a 16.9 oz bottle into my Ayinger logo weizen glass. This beer pours a cloudy dark golden color, with an off-white fluffy head that is initially well over an inch thick when poured. Settles to a good solid 1/2 inch of foam sitting on top of the glass that eventually setles to 1/4 inch. Pretty good lacing Fairly potent aromas of bready malt, banana, and clove are all certainly present. The taste pretty much follows suit to what the aromas are, sweet bready malt with hints of caramel, followed by banana and spicy clove. Perhaps a hint of toffee on the back end of the tongue. They really nailed the flavor profile for what a beer of this style is supposed to have! Has a nice crisp, smooth, light to medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink in the way a beer like this should be. Excellent!

a: This was a murky, muddy wheat color. It poured with a medium sized, fizzy head that faded with very little lace.

s: Beautiful hefe aromas of bananas, cloves, and bubblegum complimented by a hint of toffee.

t: Mirrors the smell, only a bit better. A wonderful hefe accented by some toffee and hints of cocoa.

m: Big and chewy.

o: Awesome example of a style I don't get enough of.

From a bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- Golden dark copper

S- Metallic, malt and spice

T- Strong clove and spice, some overripe fruit and yeast

M- slightly carbonated but overall smooth

Overall- 4/5 An exceptional example of the style and a definite hit by Ayinger. Despite being a darker beer, is very light and refreshing.

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a Samuel Smith nonic pint glass (unfortunately I still haven't acquired a Weizen glass) at low altitude in NY.

A: Pours a murky translucent copper color with a creamy, thin off-white head of good retention. The carbonation bubble in this one are small. Not much lacing.

S: Bananas, cloves, bread. A lot of malty wheat character here and a moderate strength aroma overall.

T: Opens with dark malted wheat followed by some spicy clove notes. The finish tastes like banana bread -- bready with plenty of ripe banana sweetness. I like the way the flavors slowly give way to a long finish.

M: Medium- to full-bodied with a slick mouthfeel and not much carbonation.

O: Overall, a pleasant introduction to the style for me. Another nice offering from Brauerei Aying.

Pours a murky brown with a thick white head that dissipates quickly.

Smells just like a weisse should. Banana and clove but with more malt.

Light, crisp, and effervescent. mmm banana, clove, sweet malt, and some slight bitterness. More malt than a regular wheat beer which makes it perfect for colder weather.

Light and bubbly mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

Makes me want to take a trip to Bavaria.

Hazy, kind of dark golden brown color. Lots of consistent head with good retention.
Nice aroma of yeast, bananas, oranges, condiments and malt.
Very wheaty and fruity, hints of banana, coconut and orange. Sweet but with a zesty flavor to counterbalance. Its citric and hoppy characteristic give a spicy feeling. Dry aftertaste with hints of marshmallow.
Medium body and very well carbonated, bubbles keep going up the glass.
Original beer, it reminded me of some Belgian Ales (apart from the fact it is a smooth wheat beer).

Poured from bottle into my "travel tulip". Purchased at Whole Foods in Metarie, LA. Pours a rusty orangey brown with nice off white head. Great banana and clove hefe yeast with a hint of some belgian type malts. Taste is smooth banana and caramel malt - it almost has a belgian dubbel caramel like note. Really nice...super smooth and lots of flavor. This is what to reach for if you want a proper dunkel.

Served from 500ml bottle with no freshness date. Poured into a weizen glass.

A-Pours a cloudy brown/gold. A large amount of head that drops rapidly. Lacing forms, but slips quickly down the side when tipped.

S-Sweet malts with banana.

T-Round malty sweetness followed by banana. I believe a previous reviewer thought it tasted like banana cream pie and that is an accurate description of what I'm getting here. Finishes with spicy (could be phenols?) hop bitterness.

M-Quite carbonated, but still a bit creamy. Nothing terribly special. A hint of warmth from the alcohol.

O-I really like this beer. I've enjoyed in the past and thought I had detected more of a caramel/almost toasted marshmallow in the finish. I didn't pick that up this time around, but it is an extremely enjoyable beer. I will go back to this when I'm craving a weisse.
