Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“The union of wheaty freshness and dark malt often produces a fullness of taste and complexity”, explains the world-famous English beer commentator Michael Jackson.

This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

Poured into a teku glass

A: Amber/orange with a white 1.5 finger head that lingered. Thick lacing.

S: Banana bread, cherries, wheat.

T: Follows nose with a sweet, summery taste. Light, refreshing. Grainy, in a good way.

M: Medium with medium to high carbonation. Thick, almost chewy.

O: A great summer beer. A bit pricey ($3.50 for a 16.9 ounces) but an enjoyable dunkelweiss.

L : Sun tea and apple cider colored with a very tall head of 4 fingers, soapy and sudsy. Lace is left sparsely in broken hills on the sides.

S : Dark wheat meets cinnamon sprinkled bananas, mandarin orange, and bazooka bubble gum in the nose. Lingering notes of lightly charred barley, citrus, pink grapefruit, dark bread crust.

T : Light, fruity, delicious with a hint of darkness. Flavor similar to the nose. First thing I notice is the literal crushed vitamins and minerals that glide past my tongue adding texture, with strong notes of banana, banana peel, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cherry or berries, orange peel, and clove. A knock-out flavor profile while remaining crisp, sweet, and easy.

F : Textured with minerals, vitamins, and unfiltered wheat. Makes it drink like pulp OJ. Incredible. Beyond that it's very crisp, smooth, and light.

O : Will I buy this again? Abso-freaking-lutely. This is one awesome Dunkel, not to be missed by any beer lover. Classy work, here.

Pours a cloudy golden hue with a nice head. The smell is of wheat and a little bit of bananas. It has a taste of the wheat and a sweetness of banana that comes through. A nice wheat beer what will please anyone.

Yum-o, great dunkel! Appearance had a huge, thick, creamy head. Aroma is typical traditional Bavarian hefeweizen. Flavor's where it's really good - with qualities that go perfectly with the palate: fruit, yeast, rye bread, and a bit tart on the finish. Body is soft up front and a bit crisp from carbonation in the back. Super drinkable! Want to try it on draft.

Look: Murky, golden brown, with off white lacing. Extra yeast that was hanging out in the bottle made its way into my glass... not exactly appetizing looking but yeast is yeast and I wouldn't be drinking this beer without its help.
Smell: Grainy, hay, malt, yeast, light fruit, fresh banana
Taste: Like a wheat beer... hits the style pretty well. Not much of a hop presence. On the sweeter side. Some breadyness and yeast flavors. Maybe a bit of light fruits like citrus and cherry/peach... stone fruits I guess.
Feel: On the lighter side, medium-light. Foams up pretty quickly. Head dies down within a minute or two leaving a pretty carbonated beer behind.
Overall: An interesting dunkelweizen. Wouldn't hesitate to get another one, but also not running out to the store to search one out specially either.

500ml bottle into a 500ml wheat beer glass.

Poured a dark copper brown with the usual big white head. The head died surprisingly quickly but it looked nice.

Nose is a little spicy with maybe a hint of banana. Not overly expressive but nice.

Palate has more going on. A little spicy with some yeasty banana, clove notes along with some more malty flavours coming through. Perhaps a hint of cherry.

Good mouth but a little thin. carbonation is low. Quite smooth.

Overall very good. Classic dark wheat. Much better than most of the wheat beers I've tried lately. More flavour in this dark wheat.

Highly recommended.

Poured cloudy dark yellow-gold into a tall glass from a bottle. Nice head and lacing. Pleasant banana smell that carries over to the taste. Taste of spice and grass. Very nice beer!

This dunkelweizen pours a slightly opaque dark golden / amber color with a thick, frothy white head that quickly dissipates almost completely. The scent is of a milieu of spices, wheat, and maybe a little banana. It smells very similar to a saison. The flavor is more complex and fuller bodied than the typical hefeweizen, as it should be. It has a variety of spices including clove, gingerbread, banana, wheat, and a nice medium malt character. It has a very nice crisp finish to it as wellThis is a really nice beer. Like most of the Ayinger beers I have tried so far it is a good example of the outstanding quality, no frill, classic style common to German beer. It is clear why this is a very highly rated dunkelweizen.
