Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“The union of wheaty freshness and dark malt often produces a fullness of taste and complexity”, explains the world-famous English beer commentator Michael Jackson.

This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

17 ounce bottle purchased at the North Coast Co-op in Arcata, California.

Pours overcast amber. The head is bright white, rises a fast two inches and falls gradually without leaving a shred of lace. Smell: granny smith apples, fresh California grapes, and a chewy, earthy background of fresh bread. Taste opens with a tart fruitiness that flattens out through the middle revealing a short stint of tangy bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter-sweet, delicious. Mouthfeel: a full, palate coating body, without being heavy, and lots of refreshing carbonation.

My first time with this style, enjoying it.

I didn't have any trouble with the head on this one. It was a big head, but it subsided fairly quickly to just a thin ring around the surface.

I can't believe how rich and complex the smell of this beer is. On one level it's citrusy, and on another it smells like fresh baked banana bread. There is a bit of a bite at the finish, like a grannysmith apple.

There are no rough edges on the taste. Smooth and slightly fruity. Not as heavy fruit on the taste as the smell. The finish is also just right. I don't like a lingering taste.. so this is exactly the kind of beer that goes well with lunch and light dinner foods.

This is an all around "good beer".

Poured into a teku glass

A: Amber/orange with a white 1.5 finger head that lingered. Thick lacing.

S: Banana bread, cherries, wheat.

T: Follows nose with a sweet, summery taste. Light, refreshing. Grainy, in a good way.

M: Medium with medium to high carbonation. Thick, almost chewy.

O: A great summer beer. A bit pricey ($3.50 for a 16.9 ounces) but an enjoyable dunkelweiss.

Pours a cloudy amber / brown color, with a huge, creamy, off-white head. On the nose there is complex fruitiness and almost gives off a tiny hint of smokiness (I could be wrong though). On the palate there is traces of bananas, cloves, apples, and pears all rolled up together. This isn’t my favorite style, but I do enjoy one during lunch with a good meal. I haven’t had many dunkel-weizen’s but this has to be one of the better versions I tasted. Overall good brew!

Pours cloudy yellow, nice thick foamy head, leaves a clingy lace in the glass, aroma of wheat and bananas, banana-clove yeasty flavor, some bubblegum in the aftertaste. Light body, clean and crisp, very refreshing another one of my favorites, always good.

A - Deep golden body, with a splash of amber. Just hazy enough, and a nice boiling pot bubble ascension. Two finger head that started like a block of swiss cheese when poured. Sits nice and foamy white.

S - Fresh fruit meat and grassy sweetness. Wheat flowing through the nose.

T - Delicious mild apples and sweet wheat. Not alot of hop or malt flavors. Some alcohol evaporating giving a nice touch yet not a high abv. Apple skin in the finish and mild bannana paste. Very faint spice to add another nice facet.

M - Super easy to drink. Light-medium body and easy carbonation.

O - A quality German brew. Not very dunkel but an awesome wheat beer in total.
