Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“The union of wheaty freshness and dark malt often produces a fullness of taste and complexity”, explains the world-famous English beer commentator Michael Jackson.

This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

17oz. bottle poured in Ayinger weiss beer glass. Cloudy dark golden color with huge white head. Aroma is of bananas and apples. Flavor is also fruity with the bananas and apples. Clean crisp finish with hint of cloves. Lacks the citrus taste of many hefes, but still quite good. Wish I had some more. Drinkability is quite high on this one. Mouthfeel was very pleasant.

Pours a dark amber color with a large white head that quickly settles. No lacing is left on the glass. The smell is good with spice and fruity esters. Nice malty base flavor with the yeast flavors playing not as large a role as in other Dunkels. More approachable wheat beer for that reason. Light body with abundant, bordering on harsh carbonation. Nice overall and very drinkable. Good introduction to the style for people.

Presentation: 17 oz euro brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Hazy amber with a creamy looking off white lace.

Smell: Soft and fruity with hints of banana and granny smith apples ... trace of clove also in the nose.

Taste: Crisp and smooth with an assertive carbonation ... a soft wheat flavour and mouth feel hold the medium body together. Pretty much on the dry side with lots of fruit character (apples and banana), a rounded tartness and a clove like spicy flavour helps to balance a little. Hops are vitualy invisible ... long dry semi grainy finish helps to wrap this brew up.

Notes: A well built dunkel hefe-wezien ... quite drinkable to say the least. One of the better imported dunkel hefe-wezien. Did some one say lunch time brew ... pair it up with a smoked ham and munster cheese on rye.

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a hefeweizen glass.

The look of this dunkel is quite nice as it pours a yellowish bronze color with a lot of bubbles rising to the top. Head starts out big, then recedes into wafer-thin layer of white floating on top of the beer. Smell is very, very nice. Banana is the dominant scent, along with malt and citrus nuances.

Not too much bitterness at all, can't really taste the hops at all. Banana flavoring is much more subdued as opposed to the smell. Taste is nice and bready as is characteristic of most weizens. Not too much chewiness, though. The breadiness stays clean through the the finish with just the slightest hint of an aftertaste. Mouthfeel is okay, no carbonation to speak of. It's on the lightish side; doesn't really detract from the flavor, but it could feel like more than just water.

Drinkability is relatively high, owing to the pleasant flavoring and easy drinking experience. Definitely would drink another if I had one.

A: Huge frothy head that fades quickly with rusty orange and very hazy color, its a little too hazy from the unfiltered but maybe a little too much

N: Nose has some sweet and sour notes a little yeasty wheaty and Belgian wit like

T: Taste starts with rich dark malts, very similar to their oktoberfest but with more butter, banana, light fruit, some yeast, a slight citrus and sour apple, airy and light but lots of flavor, the unfiltered part gives it some earthiness and bitter character

M: Mouth has lots of carbonation and buttery but a slight smooth thickness

F: Finish is light but dry and a little bitter with lots of malt that blanket the tongue, a slight sour apple helps finish

Final thoughts: Its a good drinking beer, less malty and more fruity and Bavarian style than the Oktoberfest which is my favorite Oktoberfest. But this is a great summer drinking beer.

Pop the cap, and prepare for a huge eruption of foam, even from an undisturbed bottle. Pours a color that looks like coke mixed with mountain dew, with an eventual small creamy head on top of the beer. Lots of yeasty clove flavors in the nose. Taste is sharp with yeasty spice, with some sweet maltiness, and a decent hop finish. Mouthfeel could be more full, but doesn't detract from the beer. Except for the instability of the product, this is a very good beer.

500 mL into Weissen glass

Color was a hazy straw brown. Light tan head. Left medium level of lacing.

Aroma was of clove and bananas (similar to a hefewissen). Taste was similar. Roasted fruits and nuts were present also.

Mouthfeel is smooth at first and then goes down creamy. It has a sticky aftertaste.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. $4 for a half liter is kinda steep, but I think it was worth it.

Big Euro bomber sized bottle, picked up at BevMo in San Mateo, CA.

A - Color like cloudy iced tea. Big head when poured into a pint glass, which quickly dissipated with no real lacing.

S - Bananas! And notes of caramel. Pretty much as expected for the style.

T - Well balanced, not quite as crisp or bubbly as the Spaten Ur-Weisse, but has a fruitier balance.

M - Not too thick, not too thin. Could use a little more texture, but nothing bad.

D - Very drinkable, chuggable even.

Overall, a worthy dunkel weizen. I'd need to have it back to back with the Spaten Fanziskaner to be sure which I prefer.

Poured into a Weizen glass.

A - Very cloudy carmel color with an abundant frothy off-white head that faded fairly quickly to a thin foam that hung around throughout.

S -Smell is of sweet malt, banana bread,ad bisquit.

T - Clove up front that gives way to a fruity, sweet malt. No hop or alcohol readily apparent.

M - Really great level of crisp carbonation, refreshing, medium/full body for the style.

O - This is a pretty good good example of the style. An enjoyable drink, but I'd max out at two I think, and would desire a change.

#500 on untappd! Cheers!

Body isnt as dark as I expected, but still just dark enough to be a Dunkel. Looks almost exactly like Schneider Weisse. Head isnt as fluffy as I want either.

Smell is more roasty malt than yeast esters. I do get a hint of banana and sweet clove. Lots of wheat twang as well.

Initially theres just sweet rich roasted wheat. Then comes in a chewy malty banana. Very full bodied and thick for the style. Hints of an estery booze as well. Sweet notes of caramel and toffee flash across the tongue every so often. It really meshes with the banana flavors well.

Although its full bodied, it finishes smooth and clean, like every German beer should.

Bottled served in a weizen glass

A - Pale amber with 1 finger white head with good retention and nice lacing

S - clove, banana, wheat

T - nice notes that follow the nose, very wheaty beer with good fruit, clove, spice to compliment the bready body

M - Light bodied, moderate carbonation

O - A good complex summer beer, or great with a beef entree.
