This also applies to the Ayinger Urweisse, which is a strong amber-colored, yeast cloudy wheat beer. The beer is strong with the first taste and malty in aroma. The top-fermented, yeasty taste sensation is unmistakable. This beer is rich in sparkle and has just a touch of a special bitter quality. The fruity, malty mild aroma will have you won you over immediately!

Poured from a 500 ml bottle.

A: Pours medium-dark orange-amber topped by a sizable, thick, off-white head. Very good retention with spots and streaks of lacing.

Aroma: Earthy-herbal hops, banana bread, apples, clove and light toast.

Flavor: good complexity but featuring banana bread and other (mainly) yeast derivatives. Also has light clove and faint spices, caramel, dark fruits, sweet malts, and some faint earthy hops.

M: Medium body; prickly, moderate-high carbonation; smooth and crisp.

O: not a favored style but certainly an excellent version.

Ayinger Ur-Weisse is a hazy, mid-range brown shade with plenty of carbonation. The head is large and creamy with very good retention. The aroma is strong of clove with an underlying malt smell. The taste is diffenently stronger of clovey yeast flavor than the past few dunkleweizens I have sampled. The underlying malt body is tasty and helps finish a sip with a sugary sweet burst. Mouthfeel might be just a little thin to be great, but the drinkability is top notch. I found this to be a very enjoyable dunkleweizen, the stronger yeast flavor enabled Ayinger Ur-Weisse a degree of individuality from the standards I've tried.

Pours a somewhat hazy copper/amber color with a big blooming head,the aroma is of roasted malt and green apple background,pretty interesting.The taste is spicey and a litle smokey with some lingering fruitiness in the finish.This beer has alot of different flavora,pretty complex and pretty darn good.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a weizen glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of heavy with wheat, yeast and banana along with some caramelized malt.

T: Flavors of banana and citrus jump out at first and are quickly followed by the breadiness of wheat and yeast. The malt character is hearty but still on the light side. There are touches of hops and smokiness and there’s a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and very smooth, light-to-medium body, medium-to-heavy carbonation, clean finish.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not very filling, very good representation of style, it’s certainly worth drinking a few of if you’re in the mood for the style. This one is just another quality German brew.

A - The beer pours with three fingers of off-white foam on top of a hazy, golden-brown body. The head settles down rather quickly, but leaves fairly good lace on the glass.

S - Lots of bubble gum and banana with some bready notes of honey and toffee.

T - Banana flavored yeast and toffee malt with some bubblegum yeast. A little bit more fruity yeast in the middle with a hint of caramel. It finishes up with more bubblegum character and toffee paired with spicy clove notes.

M - Medium-thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a somewhat sweet finish.

D - Very nice, like Ayinger's light colored weisse it has an excellent yeast character, but here it is balanced by a light note of bready toffee and just a hint of sweet caramel in the middle. Very drinkable, one of the best German wheat beers that you are likely to come across in the US.

Major foam from first pour to last in the tall Peroni lager glass. Thick piles of suds. They call this a dark Weizen but it's a medium amber in color. Sudsy mouthfeel that is the glory of the German brews.

The flavor has a little of the clove taste, but just enough to be addictively spicy. Almost a hint of cinnamon. Fragrant nose as you sip. This is the classic German wheat beer taste, though not overdone. Slightly sweet. Long warm rich taste that ends with some faint bitterness. Well balanced and highly drinkable.

We get used to paying these ridiculous prices for "craft" beers. Here's an excellent classic for four bucks for the 500 ml bottle. Purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Picked up a bottle at Chevy Chase in DC. Served in a weizen glass.

Pours a moderately-dark golden-bronze color with a thin white head that recedes somewhat quickly and doesn't leave behind much other than a bit of spotty lacing. Almost no haze. The nose is pretty weak with a bit of sweetened malt and clove. A touch of banana there as well. Taste is quite plain as well. There's just not much coming from the malt or the yeast. Mouthfeel is a bit light and undercarbonated, though it's smooth. Drinkability is decent enough, though there's really nothing all that special about this beer.

Pours golden to amber in color, cloudy, with lots of foam that goes away quite slowly. A bit chunky.
Smells more like a typical hefeweizen than a dunkel, but with a hint of roast/toastiness.
Strong hefeweizen banana and spice at the start, with some light roast in the back, also some faint caramel. Light acidic fruitiness, with some apple peel, and citrus is mild, not just lemon zest (which is not in the least as annoying as in other weizens), but some sweet oranges too. Wheatiness is a bit more complex than usual, dense and lingering, with nice grains coming through. Yeasts are chunky, quite heavy and spicy; traditional clove, with a whif of cinnamon also. Hoppiness is nice and green, with a mildly bitter finish.
Nice and smooth, goes down slowly, but easily. Beautiful, maybe a bit farther than a "dunkel", but definetely one of the best weizens out there. For me it was better than this brewery's hefeweizen.

Tasted on tap at Ayingers in Munich.

Dirty amber color with plenty of cloudiness. Moderate and lasting head. Only a few spots on the glass.

Strong wheat aroma with a bit of yeast and lightly toasted malt. Not very "dark" to the nose. A touch of banana.

The flavor draws out more banana than the smell. The yeast is also stronger. The malt is toasty but not "too dark". It's also sweet. The aftertaste is relatively short.

.5 L bottle pours an efferevscent amber with a 3 fingers deep fluffy tan colored head. Ever so,slight lacing & head retention

S: Bubblegum & fruittyness

T: Juicyfruit gum, bandaids & fruitty/jammy tastes up front. Bread, date & apricot tastes surface as the beer warms. Then banana peel sets in. Finishes fruitty, slightly gummy & quenching

MF: Medium bodied with low carbonation

Drinks pretty easy, I could probably drink 2-3 .5 liters of this of this no problem. This seems to accentuate the style with out being over the top. This is a quality offering from Ayinger

500ml bottle - $3.29 at Total Wine & More in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a clouded, dirtied tan body with a near-white, expansive head.

Smell: Fruity, malty nose with some traces of honey on morningtime wheat toast, a dusty yeastiness, and popped clove buds.

Taste: Faintly tangy wheat malt at the start, a moderately sweet inclusion of both wildflower honey and light-colored caramel before some fruity tastes of Gala apples, bananas, and pears. Very low, fairly brief tartness present. Light clove accent (certainly less than was present in the aroma). Very subdued bitterness. Soft but also a bit of carbonated crispness on the sweetish, lightly fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation. Fairly smooth on the tongue.

Overall: Quite pleasant and quaffable, one of those moreish beers where you clear through the entire bottle pretty quickly. This just might beat out Weihenstephaner's dunkelweizen for me.

Significantly murky tawny with a voluminous head of whipped ecru froth that appears too soft to leave much lace... and doesn't. The nose is simply wonderful. I had expected the dark maltiness to overwhelm the classic weizen scents of banana and clove (which I love). Instead, the toasted dark caramel aromas compliment the yeast in an intriguing way.

Ur-Weisse has a beautiful flavor profile; bananas, tart apples and clove combine in a tasty, spiced fruit salad. I don't mean to be repetitive, but the flavor is like the aroma in that the toasted, toffee-like maltiness dovetails nicely with the fruit and spice. The hefe weizen personality (the yeast, in other words) is still dominant; to the beer's unending benefit and to my unending delight.

The softness and seamlessness of the flavor profile is offset to some degree by a vigorous amount of carbonation, but it isn't enough to ruin the mouthfeel or the experience. The body is a little more full than Brau-Weisse's (as it should be) and the beer is nicely quenching, a characteristic that it shares with all good German weizens.

I'm not sure that I like this beer quite as much as I like Brauerei Aying's standard hefe weizen, but it's extremely close. Ur-Weisse is obviously a quality beer that should have no trouble finding adherents from every corner of the beer landscape. I'll be buying it again, of that I'm sure. This just might be my favorite version.

Presentation: 17 oz euro brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Hazy amber with a creamy looking off white lace.

Smell: Soft and fruity with hints of banana and granny smith apples ... trace of clove also in the nose.

Taste: Crisp and smooth with an assertive carbonation ... a soft wheat flavour and mouth feel hold the medium body together. Pretty much on the dry side with lots of fruit character (apples and banana), a rounded tartness and a clove like spicy flavour helps to balance a little. Hops are vitualy invisible ... long dry semi grainy finish helps to wrap this brew up.

Notes: A well built dunkel hefe-wezien ... quite drinkable to say the least. One of the better imported dunkel hefe-wezien. Did some one say lunch time brew ... pair it up with a smoked ham and munster cheese on rye.

A - Deep golden body, with a splash of amber. Just hazy enough, and a nice boiling pot bubble ascension. Two finger head that started like a block of swiss cheese when poured. Sits nice and foamy white.

S - Fresh fruit meat and grassy sweetness. Wheat flowing through the nose.

T - Delicious mild apples and sweet wheat. Not alot of hop or malt flavors. Some alcohol evaporating giving a nice touch yet not a high abv. Apple skin in the finish and mild bannana paste. Very faint spice to add another nice facet.

M - Super easy to drink. Light-medium body and easy carbonation.

O - A quality German brew. Not very dunkel but an awesome wheat beer in total.

A: The pour is a little light for what I'm used to seeing out of a Dunkelweizen. A light copper color with a massive, soapy, off-white head.

S: Starts off with the usual suspects such as banana, bubblegum, and clove. An almost sourdough breadiness which is a bit different as well. Some hints of floral hops are present as well.

T: A big blast of banana and clove flavors to begin. Fairly sweet with a surprisingly prominent level of floral hoppiness. A subtle to moderate bitterness and some light citrus. Not quite as bready and hearty as I had hoped for.

M: The body is medium with a pretty high level of carbonation that gives a slightly creamy feel.

D: Dunkelweizens continue to be a bit of a weird style to me. This one was one of the better examples I've had, but still not quite as enjoyable as a traditional hefeweizen or weizenbock.
