On draft at Capone's in Norristown, PA during Philly beer week. The Warsteiner reps were gracious, paid for my first draft and answered all of my questions. From what I understand this beer will now be available in the U.S. in bottles and kegs (50L).

Appearance is a cloudy brown, with more apparent unfiltered yeast than Franziskaner dunkel. The smell is overwhelmingly caramel with some banana esters. Taste is very smooth with predominant flavors of caramel, clove and banana. This is one of my favorite styles and I would routinely keep kegs of this dunkelweiss in my beer cooler as soon as it is available.

Had this dunkel at draft at Capone's during Philly Beer Week on June 4, 2013. It was an extremely smooth and creamy on the palate with an even, sweet malt character. Flavors of caramel, cloves and banana. I was instantly a fan. It eventually became available on draft at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia and after several visits to confirm my initial impressions over the next 3 years, I tried to find it in bottles or kegs for home. Never showed up. The Warsteiner distributor rep at Capone's told me it would be available soon in PA. Well, after three years I began experimenting with mixtures of what I could find available here in PA in order to make a similar tasting dunkelweizen. What I found was a 1 to 3 mixture of Konig Ludwig Weissbier (bottle) with Franziskaner Dunkel (keg) was a close approximation to this dunkelweizen. Both of these beers are available in PA.

500ml bottle with a BB date stamp of 15 Feb. 2015.
Pours slightly hazy, dark amber, with an abundance of carbonation bubbles rising to a durable, light but creamy, bone-colored head.
Aroma: some malt, more ripe banana and spices.
Flavor: follows smell, but more malt and less spicy.
Feel: light body; exceptionally smooth and creamy for a light bodied beer.

Hazy amber color with beige head. Aroma has mostly toasted grains and overripe banana. Taste starts on the sweet side with banana and a touch of caramel. Gets slightly boozy on the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Not bad but it's not one of the better examples of a dunkelweizen.

Dark amber on the first pour, second is cloudy and dark brown. A finger of foam initially, lasting surface skim, lacing all around the glass.

Smells like apple juice, oddly.

Tastes a little bland, thin and wheaty, caramel apple would be a stretch, but if it were fresher that might be closer to the truth. Feels over carbed and watery.
Sort of oxidized, probably not in peak condition. Overall, I'm not a fan, the regular Konig Ludwig was always overly sweet and this wasn't much better. Would give it another try if fresh on tap.

Not what I expected - thought I'd picked up a straight dunkel, but obvious is the wheat immediately. Pours a hazy muddy brown with quickly disappearing tan bubbles. Aroma is malt, caramel, and banana - pretty decent. The flavor is more subdued and boring, a little watery. More carbonation than I enjoy.

Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Hazy amber-brown pour with a two finger foamy off-white head with nice retention and lacing. The nose is classic Weizen with lots of banana, clove, caramel, brown bread, molasses, and some subtle mineral notes. The taste follows suit with tons of sweet caramel malt along with hints of banana, clove, brown sugar, banana bread, tobacco, and molasses. The mouthfeel is thick and chewy with perfect carbonation and great balance. Overall, this is one of my favorite interpretations of the style.

Split a pint bottle between stein and snifter. Drab but inoffensive gray brown murk. Finger nail of head. Snowy lace.

Malty nose with some pleasant but vague hints. Stein has smoked meats too.

Bananas, chocolate, tootsie rolls? Cola.

Mouth is strong, feels like stuffing liquid bread in your mouth. Great.

Good, hearty feel, with flavor coming out as it warms.
