I popped in here for a Burger & a Beer with DavidBanner this afternoon. This is, as our esteemed fellow CA-BA Mickeymac quite rightly says, a classic LA Hangout. Of course the only “Stars” in here this afternoon were actually DavidBanner & myself.
The establishment is basically a low ceilinged wooden shed building that once entered from the front opens out into a darkened dive. Light bulbs are expensive in Hollywood it appears. Perhaps all the Studios buy them in bulk and leave none for surrounding businesses. The Beanery comprises a long bar to the right hand side, with many small wooden table cubicles that each seat 4 in the middle area, and a couple of Pool Tables to the left as you enter. From the scratched wooden table tops to the newspaper style menus - it has a well-worn lived in “dive” feel. The stale urine odors from the homeless people give the place a down to earth feel, while you just want to knock-out the pretentious “oh look dear, isn’t that the famous BA from Long Beach” Gawpers and overseas visitors. As a foreigner of nearly 16 months standing, I just hate them. Drink with the locals would be my advice, they are quite normal, and a great bunch, and they do not seem to understand what all the fuss is about.
Passing Tourists and Hollywood aside, the Beer list is impressive for a little wooden Shed, 15 Domestic plus 15 Imported beers on Draft, maybe more as I counted more Taps. Also serves about 50 Domestic Bottled beers together with around 100 Imported Bottled beers, which contribute to an impressive overall beer selection. The beer list is easily understood, it is even broken down by Country (Imported) and State (Domestic) for your convenience. Look at the great brews from England whilst pissing yourself laughing at the 4 from Missouri. Even with all of this choice, I could not be prized away from my beloved West Coast Brews, and I opted for a Stone Pale Ale on draft together with a Chili Burger. The food menu comes in the form of a newspaper, and is also extensive. It has several million variants of Chili that I never heard of. Both the Beer and Food is reasonably priced.
An excellent place to hang out during a lazy sunny Sunday afternoon for a few Ales. You may even sink several beers before you decide what to order from the huge food menu.

There is something decidely juxtaposed about the Valet Parking for the best and most famous "low-quality Dive" in LA.

Great Beer Range, Massive Food List, Pure Hollywood.
Highly Recommended!!!!

Alright yeaaaahhhhh! This was Jim Morrison's favorite local watering hole, which brought me through the door. I doubt they had as many TVs in here for sport back in his day but there you go. Decent selection of taps, service was good enough. Interesting vibe of people in here to watch the LA Kings game as well as tourist types like myself.

This place is definitely the classic "Hollywood" hangout. Crazy decor everywhere, cool atmosphere, always packed, horrible parking. The food and beer is good but nothing too amazing. I had a good time here but I think it's mostly hyped up.

this place used to be one of the go to beer places in LA. It has now been reduced to a formatted chain restaurant, with a less than impressive craft beer selection, denny's type food, a crowd that varys from young gay hipsters to chili eating beverly hills middle aged men on harley davidsons.
sad really.
tv's everywhere, so i guess it'd be a good spot on sunday.
found myself there the other night after a show at the troubador and was struck by how the place has just slumped down while the beer scene that is pre-dates is swelling up all around it.
ended up going to 3rd stop not too far south of their and had a couple of decent pint.
disappointing to say the least, but i hear the chili is still good.

Stopped here yesterday night with a friend. Parking is a pain in the ass, I'm sure, but she lives within walking distance so not a problem.
For a Saturday night it really wasn't that crowded. Service was pretty prompt (though we weren't at the bar). Tons of TVs everywhere playing your favorite sporting event, which is a plus. Tap selection was just OK, as was the bottle selection. It's a lot better than many places in town, but it's not the best either. I had a Racer 5 which I admit I haven't seen on tap a lot of places around here. Food is solid pub fare, nothing fantastic but you don't go to a place like this looking for a 5 star meal.
Seemed like a pretty chill place, wouldn't be bad to hang out there but the location is pretty crappy unless you happen to live in West Hollywood.

I have friends that LOVE the Beanery, and on a weekday night without a major sporting event - it's a decent place to grab a pint. However, I don't think I'd ever tread there on a weekend again. It's just not worth it.

It's a sports bar for sure. It smells like a sports bar. Many of the patrons care more about sports than they do about beer. Most of them probably. I'm a a big sports fan, mind you, and I've watched a bunch of Red Sox / Patriots games there (they're pretty good about showing you the games you want). The beer selection is well above average for LA - last time I had some Stone (can't remember which).

The service ranges from decent to terrible. My buddy's girlfriend used to work there so we'd usually be treated well. The food is ok, I would never think to go there just for the food that's for sure. The clientele can be obnoxious - a lot of wannabe actors with bad haircuts thinking they're Ashton Kutcher's buddy. I hate these. It's hit or miss at the Beanery in that regard.

I've never been to the Beanery in Santa Monica, I hope I never will. - it's on the tourist wasteland often called the 3rd St. Promenade. The West Hollywood, all in all, no need to go out of your way.

My experiences at Barney's Beanery are not so great. There isn't one defining bad moment, I just think the place is overrated. They have a moderate selection of beers and the food is slightly better than average, but not much. I just don't think it's worth visiting this place if you're from out of town. There are so many better places to drink a beer in the LA area that I would not waste your time here.

They have the usual selection of pub food and some craft beers, but a lot of people are going there just to get loaded and leave. If you want that, then by all means stop in to the Beanery. If you are looking to enjoy a great beer in a great atmosphere check out some of the other local places.

I've been visiting Barney's every onece in a while for about 25 years. Actually longer, cause I got carded there once before I was 21. Wow. Some things never change, at least not much, and Barney's is one of them. Though of course, when I first went there they had a sign hanging over the door saying "No [homosexuals] allowed." So, that much has changed. The food is as good as ever, and of course the beer selection is MUCH better today. I mean the first time I had a beer there Rainier was still an independent brewery!

When you go, DO heed the advice given by others here about the parking. On a weekend night you might want to cab it from some other venue. The Sunset Strip is walking distance, and there basically ISN'T any street parking. Find a lot and pay for parking, it'll be a LOT cheaper than the ticket you'll get (if your car isn't towed). And this is place is in West Hollywood, not West Los Angeles, big difference!

The other reviewers weren't kidding about it being crowded. I arrived at 6:30pm on a sat. night to find zero tables open, and only a few barstools on the edge under the TV open. I waited at the bar having a few beers for over an hour, but never found a booth. They don't seat you here, so you have to patrol for open booths if you arrive too late.

Service is polite but they are undermanned. Lots to look at, the place has history and culture coming out it's wazoo. The beer selection was good. Not a lot on tap but what was, was good. However, the Stone IPA I got on draft was flat. A better than average bar, but too crowded for my tastes. Check the menu online if you are interested.

Service - Dropped from 5 to 3.5. The waitress had no clue about what beers they had and served up the wrong beer.
Selection Dropped from 5 to a 1. Beer menu been significantly cut down and despite this, they didnt carry half the beers items on their menu. I ordered a beer, waited 10 minutes before the waitress came back and said they didnt have the beer anymore. I ordered another, and the same thing happened. I made my third order before they actually had it. By that time the rest of my party ordered their second round (they were smarter and ordering from the tap selection).
Food - Dropped from 3 to 1.5. All of the food was way too salty.

This is not the Barney's I remember!!!

This is your typical bar fill, but filled with hundreds of beers, four pool tables, fooz ball and classic video games.

I had stone IPA on tap which was amazing. The Mrs. had the Pyramid Hefe, which was, as expected, poor. The chili is not to be missed.

The food is some of the best bar food in LA, or hell, even america.

The half dozen skimply clad girls were a huge plus, as were the two other girls kissing near the video games.

Everyone is friendly, especially the staff. The atmosphere is a little too much like animial house, but then again, it was fun to watch, especially the karaoke.

Barney's is actually a favorite of mine before going to shows in Hollywood. The Monday thru Friday happy hour from 4-7PM is real easy on the wallet. $2 drafts (can you say Stone IPA?) and appetizers are half price. (During happy hour, mind you) The "Irish Nachos" are yummy and plenty to feed 2 hungry people.

By the way, I've never had a problem with any of the tap selections at Barney's, to address an earlier review...

2/26/05 Edit: Happy hour drafts are now $2.50. Still easy on the wallet!

A real fun place to hang out and have some pints and decent bar food. Just make sure you get there early if you are going on a weekend. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly and the street parking is horrible.

The establishment has been here since 1920. Pretty impressive.

The atmosphere is pure funky bar. Many Varied colored booths. Many knick knacks on the walls and ceiling. A very colorful environment. There are a couple of pool tables and there are many t.v.'s for sports. The bar is decent size and could accomodate quite a few people.

The menus are printed in the form of newspapers. The menu is vast and they are known for their thin crusted pizza. They come in individual to large sizes. I had the pizza and thought it was very good. Another in our group had the pizza as well and was very impressed. We were all happy with the appetizers but the person who ordered the hamburger said it was dry and just okay. The menu also has Mexican, pastas, chili, soups, salads and a large variety of food.

The beer selection is excellent. They have a good selection of micros and imports on tap. They have a very nice selection of bottled and canned beers. A good selection of craft beers. I had a Rogue and when it was brought to me it was a big bomber bottle. Uh-oh. I just had a Stone from the tap before that. I'll have to wait before driving now. The beer menu lists the beers from which state or country they are from. They have a good selection of foreign beers. They have beers from the countries of Turkey and Russia to name a couple and even from the continent of Africa. They also have a full bar and a variety of wines for the non beer drinker.

The service was good but our waitress did not know much about beer. I am sure that is typical. The food prices are pretty inexpensive. The beer prices are fair but could be a tad lower in my opinion. But then again this is West Los Angeles right next to Beverly Hills. So the prices are not too bad.

All in all a great pub. Enjoy but get there early so you get decent parking. Los Angeles is very strict about its parking laws and the residential area behind the restaurant is mostly permit only parking. Read the signs before you park.

Barney's Beanery is a classic LA hangout. You'll see everyone from homeless people to movie stars at the bar and restaurant tables. Mostly, however, it's just plain folks. The beer selection is good, but the bar can get a bit on the cramped side. The food is good and the selection varied. It's a great spot to hit in the early morning hours after a night at the clubs.
